DVD Review *** Official HTF REVIEW & Discussion Thread: Star Wars Trilogy, pt. 1

On a technical note, as impressed am I am with these DVDs overall, I was taken aback a bit by how often I saw the geometrical "outline" or "shadow" around special effects that have been comped into the image. I don't know the proper name, is it matting? I think they're green, but I'm colorblind...

Having now watched ROTJ + commentary, I must say [[blasphemy alert!]] that I like young Anakin's ghost appearance better than the old version. Not to take anything away from Sebastian Shaw's performance, but in the original final shots of Jedi, Anakin and Obi Wan both looked like old men. (In...

I seem to remember reading somewhere that GL said he basically "borrowed" the idea for midichlorians from the way mitochondia work in terrestrial biology, and that he needed a simple way in the story to establish that some people were more "attuned" to the Force than others. For me, I...

On the quality of the PT... As much as I am enjoying these films (and I am!), I do feel that it's a shame that, at least in my view, three of the four main characters (Obi-Wan, Amidala, young Anakin and older Anakin) were miscast. Only Ewan McGregor makes his part believable to me. I...

DVD Review *** Official HTF REVIEW & Discussion Thread: Star Wars Trilogy, pt. 1

Nope, not me. I've got a funny feeling about this, it seems like a contrived way to "explain away" something that's just a small and silly error. And even so, this is the Star Wars universe, so it does't even have to be an error within that context. Or Han Solo could just be bluffing, shooting...

I just finished watching Empire and commentary. What a great film! I especially enjoyed Kershner's contribution to the commentary. He has a kind of humane wisdom about the story and the characters that I missed from the other speakers.

I can't believe I didn't catch this one before. It may just have to stand as a continuity error, just like Threepio talking about Princess Leia at the beginniong of ANH and then not knowing who she is when Artoo plays her hologram snippet to Luke. But maybe (clutching at straws here...) the...

DVD Review *** Official HTF REVIEW & Discussion Thread: Star Wars Trilogy, pt. 1

As I recall, much of the critics' disappointment had less to do with continuity errors, and more with the quality of the script and the dialogue, the pacing, the acting, and a perceived emotional sterility of the films. Having said that, while I readily acknowledge that TPM and AOTC leave...

DVD Review *** Official HTF REVIEW & Discussion Thread: Star Wars Trilogy, pt. 1

I dunno... I've never been much into what I think is sometimes called the "extended universe" -- the novels and games and comics and such. For me, Star Wars is the films (and, when I was a kid, the toys). The rest is marketing. (But I guess I won't be able to stop myself from following a...

I have to be careful about what posts I read now, because I'm still planning on going into Episode III spoiler-free (as much as I can, anyway). Needless to say, I didn't watch the the Return of Darth Vader featurette...

DVD Review *** Official HTF REVIEW & Discussion Thread: Star Wars Trilogy, pt. 1

Was anyone else surprised to hear (on the Empire of Dreams documentary) that Harrison Ford and Lawrence Kasdan thought that Han Solo should die in ROTJ? I've been a Han Solo fan ever since I first saw Star Wars in 1977, at the age of 9, so I would never have wanted him to die, but now...

Oops, sorry if I screwed up there. I had this previous post in mind: Anyway, it just sounded different to me.

I just watched ANH and listened to the audio commentary. I noticed many of the flaws/changes people here have mentioned, but I enjoyed the film very much anyway! The only thing that really distracted me was Beru's new voice. Not that I insist on keeping the old one, but this new ADR just doesn't...

DVD Review *** Official HTF REVIEW & Discussion Thread: Star Wars Trilogy, pt. 1

I remember reading somewhere that GL recorded scenes (with Jimmy Smits, I believe) on Alderaan, to be included in A New Hope. They're obviously not in this release. Can anyone confirm whether this is indeed the case? If so, I guess they're keeping that one for the "Definitive Edition" many...

Boy, after all that's been said on this enormous thread, what could I possibly have to add? Oh well, here goes nothing... I'm a movie fan. I'm a DVD fan. I'm a Star Wars fan. I am an enthusiast -- not a buff or an expert or a zealot or a professional. But most of all, I'm a human being...
