    American Idol - Season 5

The very last Separated at Birth updates for the season. I hope you guy remember who the contestants were. For Rain, DOUBLE Wolf Man: A couple of samples: 7 updates in all, plus an extras page. BTW, thanks to someone (I've forgotten who it was exactly :frowning: ) for the...

    American Idol - Season 5

A co-worker of mine has a theory that if they got good songs, it would be difficult to figure if it was the song that catapaulted them to success or if it was the singer. So they go out of their way to get songs that, if they sold, would be based solely on the merit of the singer and their...

BTW, I'm not the only one who thinks Kat borrowed very heavily from Jane Monheit: http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu...c-3a96439cebfb

    American Idol - Season 5

So what are we to expect from the American Idol finals? The first thing is that we can expect some sort of really cheesy song that’s instantly unlistenable and will bring up thoughts of suicide or mass murder upon further listening. I’m not sure why the producers are incapable of procuring a...

    American Idol - Season 5

Had this been the normal two hour voting, I'd say Kat would win due to text votes. But with 4 hours, I think Taylor will win walking away. You can't get that excited about Katharine singing the same songs she sang the past three weeks. I think Taylor's fans will keep voting longer than Kat's will.

    American Idol - Season 5

I think of all the proposed solutions, only the number confirmation would actually work, since it would still gauge voter enthusiasm. One vote one number lumps casual viewers with rabid fans. I don't think they'll change it any time soon because the number conf system would severely bring...

    American Idol - Season 5

Maybe a closer anaolgy would be: If the opposing QB gets hurt and the crowd cheers. That's low rent. Look, I don't think it's valid to hold this against Kat (it's not her fault at all, and she comported herself appropriately), but it is disrespectful on her parents' part.

    American Idol - Season 5

They cheered enthusiastically when Elliott was voted off. I understand that they're happy for Kat, but the polite reaction should be more subdued considering the moment is about Elliott leaving. Kat hasn't won anything yet. However, I do agree that it's a shaky reason to not vote for Kat. She...

    American Idol - Season 5

*Sigh*. The Monheit version is vocally quite distinctive, and Kat copied the phrasings exactly in many places. Anyway, I think 100,000 votes could have easily been swayed by by this, but whatever. I would like Taylor to win even though that would mean I would come in tied for second in the AI...

    American Idol - Season 5

Okay, this is my last word in the subject (I can hear the cheers akready). The fact that Kat copied is immaterial to me. I don't care. I'm not overly concerned about the ethics, the copyright violations, or any of that. Within the context of Idol, there is an issue where Kat may get...

    American Idol - Season 5

I'm sorry, but that makes no sense. I don't know what point you're getting at, frankly. So if there's a song with a multitude of arrangements, I can record any one of them and not credit the artist who made it? Huh?

    American Idol - Season 5

EDIT: I misread the original post. I would say that, regardless of how many times a song has been covered, any different and unfamiliar arrangement should be credited to the artists thatcreated them. I think a lot of voters are impressed with the way in which Kat sang the song as much as how...

    American Idol - Season 5

So this is it – down to the final three. Compared to years past, there is no lock for the final two – not because all three are deserving (at this point, Taylor is clearly the best contestant left) but because Elliott and Katharine have so many weaknesses. And their faults were on vivid display...

    American Idol - Season 5

Gosh, he really comes off like a jerky guy who's full of himself -- like what you thought Ace might be like except more bitter. And I'm sorry, but he pretty much says that he never actually mentioned Live by name, and I still contend that the producers would have fallen over themselvers to...

    American Idol - Season 5

I still stand by my hypothesis that AI starts out as a popularity contest and then becomes a singing competition as we start getting into the top four or five. With this in mind, has it occurred to Chris fans that maybe he isn't the greatest SINGER in the competiton? I understand that Kat was...

    American Idol - Season 5

I think that with the right song and the right arrangement, Katharine can sound great. I thought her rendition of Black Horse and Cherry Tree was fantastic (I've listened to it more than once). When she's tries to hard and misses a note or forgets a lyric, she just goes off the rails. I think...

    American Idol - Season 5

For me, Elliott is the Clay Aiken of this year -- a guy who doesn't look the part, who came out of nowhere with no expectations to become a fan favorite. Also... I DON'T GET IT. To me, his voice is washed out and unspectacular and his performances are boring. What is it -- is it my DD...

    American Idol - Season 5

I got a bit of a scoop: Clive Davis will be returning to pick the songs for the final three Also, it looks like: Chris is going home based on his being tied with Kat for the bottom two according to DialIdol, which does not count text votes. Historically, Kat has picked up tons of text...

    American Idol - Season 5

Disastrous Plastic Surgery returns to American Idol tonight in the altered form of Priscilla Presley. The creepiest thing about her face was that, due to repeated facelifts (stretching her skin tighter and tighter until it became taut like tympani drum) or repeated injections of botox, barely...

    American Idol - Season 5

Just as I was trying to guess who the next guest artist would be based on the American Idol criteria of either botched plastic surgery (Tom Jones maybe?) or blindness (Jose Feliciano perhaps?), the producers decided not to have a guest artist tonight. I suspect that they were looking for a blind...

No, not 17... 18!!! The Tom Jones/Art of Noise version did indeed come out in 1988. The original came out in... drumroll... 1986. That's TWENTY freakin' years ago! I know I'm old, but sheesh...

    American Idol - Season 5

Taylor is the only one left who hasn't been in the bottom three -- as a matter of fact, Kat, Chris, Elliott and Paris have all been in the bottom two (although Paris probably flirted closer with getting tossed off than the other three). I am through with predictions, though. You can't predict...

I haven't been this giddy about Idol since Constantine was voted off! If we had champagne, my wife and I would have popped it! Kellie being eliminated is just fantastic -- the fact that Paris stays another week is just gravy.

    American Idol - Season 5

Snikt snikt snikt. Boy, the judges really sharpened their knives for tonight, eh? It’s nice to see Paula try to be a bit critical but her incoherence is painful to listen to. Randy seemed hate everything and Simon was waaay off the mark tonight, over-praising on occasion and then just gutting...

    American Idol - Season 5

I wouldn't really listen to Randy. For one thing, he insists that this year's contestants are better than last year's, and that's just not so. I mean, I think it's really a toss up between Taylor and Katharine at this moment. I think Paris has one shot, which is that she just kills from now...

If anyone's still interested, last week's commentary is up at: American Idol Commentaries Final Six Analysis: Okay, so every year, people start screaming about how American Idol is just a popularity contest, and every year I say the same thing: It is and it isn’t. Because it starts out...

    American Idol - Season 5

Thanks for the insightful analysis Dana, although you had me at "I've come to hate (Kellie)" (and not at "major straight-girl crush on Katherine" which I suspect appealed to some of the more prurient readers of this thread -- you know who you are :D). It's interesting that Simon is now...

    American Idol - Season 5

It appears that there are a lot of people in denial of Kellie's phony dummy act. Lemmie guess -- Clay's not gay either? Look, Carrie from last year doesn't appear to be the sharpest tool in the shed. But she sort of stays quiet and doesn't speak unless spoken to. Because you know why? Because...
