I've heard many explanations for this as well. In addition to the ones mentioned, I've heard that 9 yds. = length of the ammo belt on a particular WWII fighter. "Giving them the whole 9 yds." meant to expend your entire quantity of ammunition at the target. Curiously, the Urban Legends website...- Greg_R
