Philip, I hate having numerous editions of films taking up valuable space in my tiny bedroom! Hence my exasperation at Fox wasting a load of bit-space on a dts track for Alien that could be better used. Looks like I'll be keeping my Alien dvd though, and at the moment it lives in a double amaray...

So the bombastic, action-filled Aliens doesn't get dts? Dammit! And why bother with dts on two out of the four movies? The space taken up by a half-rate dts track on Alien could've accomodated four 192kbps DD2.0 tracks instead. This begs the question 'What would everyone rather have on Alien?'...

I've also been wondering about the potential differences between the two sets. The confirmed lack of the Legacy documentary on the R1 version is a bit strange to me. If space is such a concern - leading to Fox omitting this rare (in the States anyway) documentary - then why include it on the R2...

Now that's what I call practical packaging, instead of some 9 disc fold-out monstrosity. I hope that the R1 release gets the same treatment.

I hate fold out digipaks, especially a 9-disc version which will drive me insane! To keep opening it and closing it ad infinitum is not something I'm looking forward to, as this set is gonna see a lot of use. I've got a load of double amarays lying around, so I know where my Quad discs will be...

Just thinking out loud here, but I guess you could also use positive elements struck before the negative was cut and conformed, but the quality of these (usually used in workprints and the like) would be questionable.

Good point Jon - I forgot one of the most elementary editing principles! And a quick glance at a few scenes of the Aliens dvd confirms that there are a few jump-cuts. Thankfully most of the new footage inserted is of entirely seperate shots, so there is no noticable jump-cut when they are edited...

I hope this set ends up in some sort of slip-cased double alpha (for the 2-disc movies)/single amaray (for the extra disc) combo, instead of a bloody fold-out thing like X-files has. A 9 disc fold-out case would be an absolute nightmare to keep in good condition, and I hope that Fox realise...

Yes Brad, DVDSoon is where I've pre-ordered the R1 version. The release date must be wrong, sure, but they've never done me wrong in the past. I use them semi-regularly, and I haven't got a bad word to say against them. For those interested, check some of the UK-based forums for more feedback...
