I love the New York theaters, and it was depressing seeing them turned into office building and toy stores
The last films I saw at the Criterion was "Batman" in 1989, the last film at the Rivoli was "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" and the last at the Lowes State was "The Cotton Club"...
During the 60's they cropped the top and bottom off "Gone With the WInd" and presented it in 70MM (1967) - but back then you only had your memory to compare it with so most people never knew (I didn't see it I was just a toddler)
I also found sync problems. The English soundtrack is in 7.1 (usually I have sync problems when I listen in 7.1) I normally switch to 5.1 and the problem goes away.
But "Fiddler" only has 7.1
I switched to a different setting on my reciever and the sync problems weren't as noticable. And...
An Italian actor played Sasha, when filming was completed it was decided his accent didn't sound right so an other actor was brought in to dub all his lines, the two youngest daughters (Teyve had 5) were also dubbed since they sounded too british

Back on topic: I'm so glad I plopped down my $15 for this disc. It was an absolutely fantastic way to spend an afternoon. It looks exactly as a film of its vintage...
Finally got around to watching "Fiddler on the Roof" on blu-ray. I thought the film looked great. I've seen it in theaters a number of times and the blu-ray is pretty accurate in it's image. The sound was pretty good also. A for image. ("The Greatest Story Ever Told" should have looked better...

Definitely will be picking up this. Personally, I won't mind if MGM Blurays tend to be just be "pretty good" because so many of their DVD titles were passable/mediocre...
MGM will be issuing "Hair" and "New York, New York" on blu on June 7th....I will definately be waiting for the reviews before purchasing ("Hair" hasn't be issued since the late 90's and in desperate need of a new transfer)
I was quite amazed with 'How the West Was Won" 91962) I couldn't believe the three projectors were able to stay in sync for over 3 hours!
So many DVD/Blu-rays have out of sync problems at various points throughout a film (some tranfers are adjusted, some not ..the picture track and sound...
Living in Los Angeles we have the opportunity to see many older films with newly restored prints presented in the best theaters, with the best sound and in some cases 70MM projection.
Some films from 60 years ago look even better than many films shot today. I have not spoke to one person...
Many films 40 - 50 years old have excellent sharp images. Many 40 year old films look better than some of the newer ones. You should always expect the best. Setting your expectations low may be a problem with younger generations. You should always expect the best, no matter what you buy -...

Blu-ray.com has their review up. Very positive, with twin 4.5/5 scores for PQ and AQ.
I have just finished skimming through the disc, and FWIW...
well Amazon already started the shipping process so I couldn't cancel it. But if the reviews are good - great, if not...back it goes.
The GSET Disc and the lack of pre-release reviews has me worried - although, it is just a disc, it's not like the world is coming to an end (Japan)
No, no, no, I would read the reviews first (of course)
If the reviews are good : I open the disc and it goes on the shelf with all the good little discs.
If the reviews are bad: then I send it back
Right, of course right!
The fact that the Disc streets tomorrow and there have been no reviews doesn't leave me with the impression this is good transfer (after Greatest Story Ever Told - and what's up with "Teen Wolf" having no chapter stops or anything????)
I may send it back unopened to Amazon with an...

Ten Oscars, and one of the great musicals of Broadway and Hollywood. Its cover will probably look like this:
Love it! Mine...
Style "C" was for Foreign markets only, Style "A" was for Britian. The US Used Style "B" and "D" was the 79 re-release (where 20 minutes were cut from the film)

I also prefer the use of original artwork, but to be honest I actually kinda like that new FotR cover. :)
Except the town in the film looks nothing...
I expect this will just be a rehash of the last DVD release - unless MGM does a new transfer and as with "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" knocks it out of the park
But lately MGM is just catching up putting out catalog titles with so so transfers done years ago

If I "sing" it slower, Ya da da da, Da da, Da da, Yabba Dabba Doo!
MGM will release "Fiddler on the Roof" on Blu-ray April 5th,
Good news - though I must say it will surely win the ugliest cover award of the year (Going up against "The 10 Commandments", "The Bible" and "King of Kings")
Too bad they didn't use the original poster art which is...
