The article mentions that Tarantino has been showing up at screenings, which I remember reading a couple weeks ago he was planning along with other cast members. Has anyone heard where he has appeared? It originally sounded like he was going to tour the country during the roadshow, but I haven't...
I thought I noticed a little distortion on the sides, and with the Cinerama logo at the beginning, should this really be shown on a curved screen? I saw it on a flat screen. I was in the second row, so it could have been an illusion.
I'm surprised to hear the was an Overture card at one showing. I saw it a the AFI D.C. and there was no card. There are louvers on each side of the screen for when they show 1.85 and they fold back a little for 2.35, but for this they went even farther back for the 70mm 2.76. It was also nicely...
That sounds probable, but maybe the AFI specifically got cases of each one.
We were comparing them and they were different, I saw 3 or 4, and one member of the audience got a complete set for answering a question correctly.
The thing about Ultra Panavision is the width. While all 70mm provided less grain, you could still get all the detail with the other 70mm formats for mid shots. You want breadth with UP70, which I believe is its main feature in relation to other 70mm formats imo.
Ultra Panavison shines in long and extreme long shots, especially of natural vistas, but you can't do a movie entirely in long shot and be very effective with actor interaction. Maybe there could have been more long shots, I don't know yet, I'm seeing it next weekend, but I'm sure Tarantino...
This is my plan also. I am planning it out now. I want constant height so most of the time there will be full side masking on each side. There will be some of the original drama in it when the masking opens to full 2.76 width. Unfortunately I'm still about a year away from completion, mainly due...
I remember reading that in the early days of Ultra Panavision 70, the minimum screen width had to be 60 feet or they would not install the equipment. Today we are lucky to be able to see it projected at all, so we've got to give some allowances.
Yes it could be bigger, but I just sit closer. I haven't seen Ultra Panavison there, but I would think it is really not wide enough for full effect, so I'll probably sit within the first 5 rows. :)
I would think this should be seen on a 60 ft.+ wide screen for full effect, but they have to be rarer than hen's teeth. With Star Wars playing at the same time, if you get to see it, you will be one of the few to be able to tell your grandchildren you saw The Hateful Eight in Ultra Panavision...
It's a long story. One of RAH's inventions (?) about clueless/undertrained theater employees. You'll have to search the MFL threads for further insight. :)
From what I've read, the presentation sounds very serious. I can't say how the film will be, but considering the work that has gone into it, with refurbishment of the Ultra Panavision equipment and the studio restoring a large number of 70mm projectors for the roadshow, I don't think we'll be...
I'll be seeing it at the AFI Silver near Washington D.C. They show 70mm regularly, so I expect no problems there. I have to hand it to them (the studio), it's a big undertaking with the possible problems. They just need to keep Tammi out of the booth that night.
It looks like there is a list coming together of theaters that will be showing The Hateful Eight in 70mm over at In70mm.com:

The 70mm roadshow rollout this Christmas will include reserved seating, overture and intermission, and possibly more. I'd love to see a program also, but I'd be prepared to pay for it.
I am expecting this to show in 70mm at the AFI Silver near DC. The 2.76:1 aspect ratio should be interesting. You really need a 60+ feet wide screen. I don't think the AFI's is quite that wide. Probably not too many of those left.
