Bronston epics and Land of the Pharaohs coming at last!

I just got hold of the recently released Spanish version of The Manificent Showman (El Fabuloso Mundo) which says it is newly remastered. It's 2.35:1 anamorphic with OK but not brilliant picture quality. It doesn't include the original Overture, Intermission or Exit music. The sound is stated on...

Are you sure it's even stereo? I've not come across any DVDs of this title which are other than 2 channel mono - and none seem to have the Overture, Intermission etc. I saw the film in Cinerama but, frankly, the film isn't very good and it's only worth having if presented in it's original...

Bronston epics and Land of the Pharaohs coming at last!

P.C. Films Corp is (or was) based in New York and was set up by Pierre Du Pont, Paramount Pictures, Sun Oil and various banks (as reported by Variety). PC Films therefore owned the films and presumably arranged worldwide distribution rights but I have no idea whether they still do so.

Unfortunately although dirt and scratches have been removed from this new Weinstein DVD, the picture still suffers from high contrast and dull colours - as do all the DVDs put out in other regions. It seems to me as if everyone is using similar source material.

Just received my copy of EL CID. The transfer is far superior to all previous DVD versions from Europe and elsewhere. The picture has been cleaned up well and looks very clear with scarcely a sign of any blemishes. The DD 5.1 sound is particularly good, especially as regards the music track...

Bronston epics and Land of the Pharaohs coming at last!

I think that's right. I saw the film when it was first released in cinemas and thought it was great then and still do. I don't understand why so many people seem to dismiss it as being little more than a joke. But then there are many people who simply don't appreciate or understand the epic...

I don't find DVD Savant's reviews of much value either. His reviews tend to consist mainly of discussions about the film with not enough information about the technical aspects of discs.

Brian - I also saw The Magnificent Showman (as it was called) at the Coloseum as well as many other Cinerama presentations. What a great cinema that was. I see that you and I are almost exactly the same age (I'm one day older). Our generation grew up with the big epic films and we still think...

Someone on another site who has contributed to the extras for EL CID has said that round about Jan 2008 is the likely release date.

What a pity Warner Bros didn't use that original poster artwork of Land of the Pharaohs shown on DVD Beaver. It's so much better than the version they used - which I think was done for the laser disc (?).

The Press Release says these will be deluxe releases so I think (and hope) that these will be complete Roadshow versions with extras.

I'm a bit confused here. Surely 70mm roadshow presentations of "Roman Empire" were shown 2.75:1. However, I agree that there is a case for debating whether this ratio is too wide for satisfactory home viewing.

According to a post on DVD Times Forum, Movies Unlimited say that Weinstein have acquired the rights to the Samuel Bronston epics Fall Of The Roman Empire, El Cid, 55 Days At Peking and Circus World and plan a mid-2007 DVD release. The rights for these films had been with Miramax for some...
