The promise of an Apple TV

There's no refresh announced. There's only a rumor-site rumor. Assuming it's a year out -- as typical for Apple's iOS devices -- would you really have held out another year for a $149 box? This seems like a non-issue to folks that spend $500+ annually for a new smartphone.

The promise of an Apple TV

Interesting. Maybe Apple is going for an annual refresh, rather than the release-then-languish it's had recently for the Apple TV.

The promise of an Apple TV

AppleTV on its way...to give to my sister for Christmas. To my surprise, she really wants one. When I saw the demo at the Apple Store, and it had a Disney Kids channel, I thought my niece is never going to let her mom use this thing! There's a slight chance Santa will bring me one, but I'm...

The promise of an Apple TV

I see what you mean. I was thinking of the question through the lens of recent comments to the effect that, Apple won't let Amazon (or others) sell movies on its devices (only stream).

Kindle App on iOS does not have purchasing (never has, I think). Same for Audible. You can buy through the Amazon App or website, and then sync to the Kindle app.

The promise of an Apple TV

If the goal is solely to play iTunes media stored on a different computer (or from the iTunes online store), you don't need any storage. It's all streamed from a hard drive on your LAN (or from Apple). That said, in the general announcement thread you're talking about and streaming general...

OS X on the iPad Pro? I don't...I mean...but...5 years of iPads...why would anyone expect such a thing? That's like expecting the iPhone to run OS X or the new MacBook Pro to run iOS.

Yeah, that was called out during the keynote as a feature.

It would be easier and cheaper to use an AppleTV. It's designed for this application.

The promise of an Apple TV

As for me: the AppleTV keeps falling into the category of things I want to want, but can't find an excuse to buy. What little streaming TV I watch is adequately served by my TiVo. Games are cool, but not a device seller. And the demo'd apps of MLB, Gilt, and Vacation-something are uninteresting...

The promise of an Apple TV

I've listend to about 10 hours of post-9th podcasts giving quick-takes on the announcements. One person observed that Apple's cheapest, least important product (AppleTV) starts with more storage (32GB) and has much cheaper upgrade to 64GB than its most important flagship product (iPhones).

I can't even guess the fate of appletv doing games. I think it faces the "second input" problem: why fool with the appletv when my iPad has angry birds? Isynwife going to switch to AppleTV to play her next Words with Friends move, when she can use her iPhone and not interrupt Leverage on...

The promise of an Apple TV

Which is not to say that you're wrong or they won't have 4k :) That's not something I'm personally interested in right now. I'm more interested in the AppleTV for occasional music in the house and showing photos and silly things like that. I've got a Tivo for streaming and TV.

The promise of an Apple TV

Well, people don't seemed particularly enthused about 4k TVs. And there's minimal 4k content; mostly a few shows from Netflix. There doesn't seem to be a rush to release a 4k streaming box. If Apple doesn't do it this year, and 4k starts taking off, they can refresh the model next year or the...

The promise of an Apple TV

I think there's not a hard drive, but up to 16 GB flash ram (like in your iPhone) That "hard drive" might not be what you're hoping for. It's modest storage for apps, maybe a limited selection of local music or a recently purchased movie. “While the new Apple TV will include an App Store for...

The promise of an Apple TV

Fair enough. But I can see some potential wisdom in having your new product read, in stock, and waiting a month to time the launch perfectly. Or, try this on for size (since I'm spinning tales): Roku had the launch date set for this Fall, but development or manufacturing yields were better...

The promise of an Apple TV

Isn't that what has been rumored about the AppleTV? They were thought to announce it earlier, then held off because the deals weren't in place. If you were Roku, do you announce before Apple (get initial buzz and then forgotten) or after (hope to get buzz in case new ATV is a disappointment...

The promise of an Apple TV

Fully agree about "getting" it as a "force multiplier". Not sure they get gaming as gaming. Not the way that Nintendo gets it, or Valve or Microsoft. The ugly and useless Game Center continue to indicate that to me. Last year's Keynote focus on remote-controlled cars showed that. I look forward...

The promise of an Apple TV

AppleTV as a games console has been there for Apple to sell since AirPlay. Even more so with ios7 and game controller support. Ios8 and Metal, all the more. But they need a controller, an real Apple provided high quality controller. And an updated appleTV with A7 or newer.Apple has a weird...

Fios had the better 2 yr deal when I signed up (and Comcast, whch I had at the apartment, did nothing for customer retention). But when my Fios contract ends, I think pricing will be pretty similar. The issue with YouTube and Netlifx is that is where I notice that I'm not getting the 15 Mbps I'm...

I'm also tired of my bandwidth crashing at prime time. The reality of Fios is not as great as the dream :)

Interesting. I'm thinking if switching from FIOS to comcast next year when my contract is up. Comcast has TiVo integration, a netflix deal, and maybe this appletv service.
