ppltd, "polarized" glasses are not colorized. They use filtered wavelengths of light so each eye gets full-fidelity color (IMAX). Colored classes, like interlacing 3-D DVDs, are a compromised effort. Not a solution to the full-fidelity 3-D that I'm talking about. If you don't care about...
Ahh. Got it. Thanks for pointing that out. Yes, I never meant to imply that one couldn't do "3-D" on any format the same (horrible) way we do on DVD... by alternating fields in a 60Hz-interlaced signal for use with shutter glasses. This works ok with NTSC CRT TV tubes that have a very fast...
You're right about the encoded streams (although there was some debate as to whether HD DVD allowed for 1080p60 native encoding). However, the output of the player is under no such restriction. For instance, we get 1080p60 output now from a single stream regardless of how it was encoded...
3-D is just one application of full-resolution secondary video streams. PIP with "swapping" ability is another. HD DVD could allow a "swap" but it would be an upscaled SD signal, rather than a naitve 1080p signal.
Paul, you got it. both BD and HD DVD allow for "dual (video) streams" or "multiple video streams". We called this multi-angle on DVD. However, HD DVD and BD allow for the interactive layer to play more than one video stream at the same time. the obvious feature is PIP... where you...
You made that jump from "might" to "necessary" to play a semantic game to impose contradiction into my discussion where there was none. It's likely that some titles might benefit from the increased bandwidth available to them to achieve better compression (perhaps source material releated)...
"Back to laserdisc" was almost the phrase I wrote in my last Blu-ray review regarding lossless sound. It's exactly the notion that went through my mind. Now that I'm hearing lossless again, I don't know how I lived without it for so long. Also making me realize that many of the "upgrades" I...
Great comments Mark! I'm off to read your review in full... dave :) p.s. I love that so many folks are really enjoying the sound of lossless audio on HD DVD/BD and really "getting it". Those of us who enjoyed laserdisc PCM knew just what we lost when we went to the 10:1 data-reduction...
All very true (and certainly one can never draw clear conclusions when comparing two different film which, as you say, may have very different film-based characteristics that affect compression differently, not to mention the film might just *look* different to begin with). I only meant to...
Yeah, and again, it's impossible to compare the compression of two different films to each other as the *films* may just look different. But neither is there a case to be made that higher-bit-rated do *not* improve the picture.
Yeah, I goofed with attributing to Peter. I'll have to hunt...
Yeah, realized what you meant after posting. Can you share which reviewer? Or at least hint if it's not kosher for an admin to post links to other review-sites? ;)
I agree that without direct A/B with the same title at various bit-rates it's impossible to determine with 100% accuracy how much affect the increased bit-rate is having. However, it's even less grounded to conclude that it *doesn't* offer an improvement without such a comparison. At the very...
Here's another vote for urging WB to release these on BD individually and with lossless Dolby TrueHD audio.
Amen brother. I watch the Animatrix shorts more often that the feature film. It's a great way to entertain guests who love the Matrix but don't have time to sit and watch the whole...
