    Katzenberg: HD is a Niche

Hey Jari, another poster was comparing BD to these other "niche" technologies. My point (like yours) was that it wasn't a fair comparision. dave :)

    Katzenberg: HD is a Niche

Anyone care to debate the merits of lossless audio? :D just trying to interject some humor... ;) At least it seems we all agree with the tenants of hi-fidelity video reproduction in HD media. That's what matters to me. :emoji_thumbsup:

    Katzenberg: HD is a Niche

Out of the *many* people I showed laserdisc too back in the 1990s, everyone said how nice it looked but not one person ever left planning to go out and buy a laserdisc player (platter size and disc-flipping were two of the big fear-factors there, but we need not digress into LD's shortcomings)...

"Metioning the increase in lines of resolution" does get a "HUH?" Hook a Blu-ray player up to their new plasma HDTV and let them see the picture with their eyes and you'll have a hard time getting them to agree to let you take your player back home with you. HDM is a very easy sell once...

Granted. I'll work on trying to keep the tone of my message in harmony with the message itself.

    Katzenberg: HD is a Niche

Thanks Paul. I was also told to calm down when I pushed for DVD over laserdisc, or 16x9 over 4x3 lbx. Now the new issues at hand are HD over SD and lossless over lossy audio. Not saying my opinions are without fault or that my communcation style is blemish-free... but it sure is nice when...

    Katzenberg: HD is a Niche

You betcha. His catch is that he needs 7.1 analog so I told him to wait for the Panny BD50 later this summer. If he can hold out he will... but he might cave and get a cheaper player in the meantime. Needless to say after seeing *real* HD on his set last night... SD just isn't the same... :D

    Katzenberg: HD is a Niche

Last night we watched No Country For Old Men in 1080p (BD obviously) on my friend's new 40" 1080p Plasma from about 10 feet away. We were definitely farther away than the "sweet spot" viewing angle. Even so, the image clarity and purity of the landscapes was astonishing... and it transported...

    Katzenberg: HD is a Niche

If it's "only a movie" to you, then why do you spend any time at a place like HTF?

    Katzenberg: HD is a Niche

I used to have thousands of DVDs... but not since I started to try to pay down my debt and prepare for HDM (a nice dual-purpose goal to sell off lots of discs I never watch or won't watch again in SD). I think I've sold between 200 and 300 titles in the last few months. Many of those titles were...

    Katzenberg: HD is a Niche

I think I just passed 50 HD discs (and growing rapidly). I need to do an exact count when I get home. Can't wait to enjoy No Country for Old Men on BD tonight... ;)

    Katzenberg: HD is a Niche

Paul, that's exactly what I do with my collection. After the HD bug bit me I started pulling DVDs off my shelf saying "The next time I'll watch that will be in high-def" or "I'd rather watch another movie in HD than this one in SD"... those titles went in my Amazon.com marketplace pile. In...

    Katzenberg: HD is a Niche

Which is probably indicative of you spending money on HD versions of the films you find more visually compelling. Perfectly fine. Sorry if I used your original post (the way it sounded) to make a broader point about the art of film and how it is better served by high-definition for every movie.

    Katzenberg: HD is a Niche

Whether or not one buys on any format or even not at all isn't the issue. The real issue that was being pointed out was the erroneous attitude that HD only matters for "effects films". Films, all films, are visual media. HD matters for all films. That doesn't mean every HT enthusiast is...

    Katzenberg: HD is a Niche

sigh... Anyone can choose to buy and be happy with whatever they want. But that attitude really speaks to a lack of understanding about the art of film.

    Katzenberg: HD is a Niche

The downside to a "niche" is that then we'd always be worried that a particular title we wanted wouldn't be produced for HD, or that it would be released long after the usual "window" for consumer-market media like DVD. That was the problem with laserdisc. Want a movie? Well, it was out on...

    Katzenberg: HD is a Niche

I can garauntee you that no laserdisc would have ever saw the top-10-movie sales list at amazon.com (had the two overlapped in time). We've already seen a Blu-ray title find its way onto that list. Even if HD becomes a "niche", it will be a MUCH BIGGER niche than laserdisc ever was.
