David Lynch's DUNE--new DVD (merged thread)

John, what you say reminds me of a story I have to share: When I first got my DAT recorder back in the mid 1990's I digitally dubbed a bunch of CD tracks onto a 120 min DAT to make a "best of" compilation. Later, I decided to re-record the DAT and so I recorded over it...again using an...

You young'ins with your fancy optically-read discovision discs...back when we used CED discs we had to carry the 100 lb players on our backs for MILES in the Arctic wilderness...it was often days before we were able to find mis-converged CRT projectors with curved-screen surfaces to watch them...

You guys just be happy you're not collecting disco-vision discs. Even with laserdisc I had quite a few returns bcs of pressing-drop-outs and rot with laserdisc... makes this Universal DVD-18 thing sound like a day at the beach! When I was young we had to walk uphill in the snow BOTH...

Mikah, this is a whole new HD film-digital transfer and outshines the previous R1 DVD in every regard (that was an old laserdisc-master ported over for DVD).

Holy Golly Sheesh. Un-frekin' believable. I'll wait this one out until the defect thing gets sorted out or until some techy dudes figure out if there is a "run" of discs that actually work right that can be identified prior to purchase. Help!!!

I saw it in the theater at age 11 and loved it. :D So, has anyone compared the PQ to the British DVD (not the French)? DVDBeaver...they should post a comparison of all 16x9 versions... I've got the British SE DVD and am wondering if the PQ of the theatrical version is worth the...

The cropping of the already-cropped extended cut is about the most idiotic thing I've ever seen a studio do (Remember the flack that WB got when they cropped the already-cropped Ben-Hur to "fake" the 65mm aspect ratio from a 35mm print? Imagine taking a 4x3 PS version of a 2.35:1 movie and then...
  14. DaViD Boulet

David Lynch's DUNE--new DVD (merged thread)

I'm assuming that's double-cropping as the "4x3" extended cut is already literally pan-and-scan (not open matte). What's that leave left...about 10% of the original picture? Can this really be true? Bizzare... Ok...this movie collector is officially WAITING for the 1080P HD version (of the...

1.85:1 for the extended cut? did they just matte the existing P/S version???

   :emoji_thumbsup: :emoji_thumbsup: Those HD images could be IMITATED! But I'd know the difference... [ahhh, perhaps he would at that...] I see you've calibrated your projector Blu-ray fashion. Who told you how to do it? No one...It *seemed* the...

Re-read the blurb...remain calm (I knew it)...these are just DELETED SCENES...which, while nice to have, don't change my world when watching the film. At first it sounded like the "alternate ending" would be...well...and [i]alternate ending![/b] :frowning:

the part that excites me endlessly is this: "plus an all-new "extended version" as it sounds like it might not be the Smithee version...but rather a NEW (read GOOD) extended cut...hopefully with Lynch's involvement...c'mon...someone here HAS to have some inside scoop on this. Anyone pick...

David Lynch's DUNE--new DVD (merged thread)

Since Universal will support Blu-ray, I really *am* tempted to wait (I've vowed to support Blu-ray and boycott HD DVD if no format unification can be reached) especially given that I've got a nice 16x9 R2 version...though I'm certain the image could be improved upon with this new R1 disc...we'll...

David Lynch's DUNE--new DVD (merged thread)

The flipper-thing ticks me off. Why not a 2-disc release? I'd pay the premium. I hope that the music-cues are improved in the extended cut...but at this point just to have the original in 16x9 DTS is good enough for me. Then again...there's Blu ray... :D :D :D

David Lynch's DUNE--new DVD (merged thread)

the current 4x3 lbx non-anamorphic Dune is much worse...in regards to detail and everything else. So far, the R2 16x9 PAL version *is* the best DVD version available...but still soft compared to what a new state-of-the-art film-tape HD transfer could afford. BTW, the zoom mode on the BenQ...
  27. DaViD Boulet

David Lynch's DUNE--new DVD (merged thread)

On my projector the R2 version is very nice...but very soft and lacking the "snap" of modern HD film-tape transfers even with other films from this era. I'm assuming that the 35mm print has much more detail/sharpness available that the R2 DVD isn't letting through...I'm hoping that the new R1...

I'd much prefer 2-discs...I hate DVD 19 can't wait to see what happens...*anything* will be better than what we have now (and my R2 SE version is nothing to brag about in terms of PQ though it does look better than the non-16x9 current R1 version...)

David Lynch's DUNE--new DVD (merged thread)

Bummer. Well...maybe the specs aren't accurate (as far as running time) or maybe Lynch's new cut happens to be 177 minutes as well... :) I can dream! That can't take that away from me! -dave BTW, I *knew* I remembered that scene from somewhere...

My birthday is July 22. Would be a nice post-b-day present. Maybe I'll stall the celebration and have a Dune-movie-party... dave :D p.s. "Includes the Extended Version (177mins) and Original Theatrical Version (137mins) of the film" Is the current "Smithee" version 177 minutes long...
