Great package. This was a transitional film so this edition is the only one that can be regarded as definitive. Choosing to release only one format, esp. not the actual theatrical format goes against all the principles of home-cinema. Theatrical representation IS KING, especially when it has an...
Hi Robert,
Previously bought films can be deleted from your hard-drive, and re-downloaded from the "cloud". If a film is a upgraded, usually when you delete the old download and get it again, you get the remastered version. That's one of the advantages of the platform.
I see that Shane is now listed in iTunes in widescreen. Not sure if it is a typo or if the widescreen master just appeared there.

If anyone have this rented or bought: could you re-download it to check the format? The trailer is in...
A dual-layer disc doesn't cost that much more than a single layer, especially the higher the numbers of discs pressed.
The masters have already been made, all they need to do is encode the widescreen version. Maybe they could just add the widescreen version on BD-Live?
If Warner's too lazy...
Jeffrey, I was and still am under the impression, according to George Stevens Jr., that the widescreen release was embraced by Stevens and it was definetely his choice to go wide. Sure it was because the boom of widescreen was coming, and he wanted to put bums in seat. That still was his choice...
The 1.66:1 was the director's intention too, it's a bit like doing a director's cut, then shortening it because the market demands it right before release.
If the director's cut reappears later, great, but the original should still remain available on home video.
That's why I champion a...
All in all, it's interesting that for this release, the theatrical aspect ratio have been decided wrong (damn history, let's restore the "original intent") to wide, sorry, boxy acclaim, whereas if George Lucas did it, there would be hell to pay.
It's not like the filmmaker was fleeced and the...
I think if you have some tools like handbrake, that you can fix The Big Country to the correct ratio yourself. I even think it's possible just by remuxing the video file on mkv, all you have to do is change the aspect ratio setting to get it to 2.25:1.
There was no debate re: Shane widescreen...
All films are compromises. That's what makes them unique, the balance between art and commerce. There was no change after the fact (unlike say Gone with the wind) as the original release was widescreen.Let's say I shoot a movie in color, and that three weeks before release, upon suggestion by...
Yes Yorkshire must have meant Pat Garrett. The theatrical cut doesn't exist on DVD, one cut on the SE is Peckinpah's print, the other is a recut.
Todd I disagree that's how Shane should be shown only -- my point is that the theatrical format should be there and be the main presentation, with...
Mark, you don't get many people complaining about Johnny Guitar being cropped square on Blu-ray because the general consensus is that old movies are square.
Regarding Shane, I like to think it won kudos for being a great film, but being in widescreen too. I think the problem is here is that we...
It really depends on the director's involvement (or the DP). When there's no input, usually the movie is reframed straight (ie once the guy in charge of the transfer sets his framing up, which can vary as some prefer to zoombox to get closer to the actors, (and hide imperfections on the borders...
Vincent, I once helped a director on a high def transfer of his first feature made a decade before, which was shot for 1.85:1 but open matte. As we went along, he kept modifying the framing, sometimes thightening it to lose the border of a set which we could see in HD (but was hidden in most TV...
It's a fact of the film life. It's like what happened to the theatrical cut of Pat Garret & Billy The Kid which was not released (unless I'm mistaken) on DVD, replaced by the director original intent. The theatrical version only exists on VHS now and is highly sought after by collectors due to...
They should release both... because if they don't, it means the theatrical aspect ratio of any movie doesn't count anymore, and any blogger with a strong voice and time to waste can twist the major companies arms into releasing squared versions of widescreen films, without any regards to the...
Oh my god, so now the theatrical aspect ratio doesn't count anymore. This decision if confirmed will hurt sales. They should have issued both in one package if the poll is of any indication.
Would George Stevens have deleted some shots, and replaced them with alternate angles, to make sure the widescreen version works? If he could, he probably did. Many filmmakers tinker with the release up until release date. I wouldn't be surprised.
Voted for both, but academy IS the extra not the reverse. 1.66:1 is the actual theatrical aspect ratio. There's no problem about it being adjusted. Movie transfers are adjusted all the time.
