    Oscar Watch 2005 - pre-awards discussion

Not surprised at all - that's where Ray was slotted last year, after all. Post-GG comments: If it wasn't clear before, it is now: Brokeback Mountain is way out in front as the front-runner for Best Picture. But this is prior to wide release. If it tanks at the box office, the door opens for...

    Oscar Watch 2005 - pre-awards discussion

I think there have been a lot of really good films (all the ones you mentioned would make my list), but we haven't had that one standout. Syriana wasn't it, IMO - again a really good, interesting film, but not the instant greatness feeling you're looking for. I'm holding out hope for King Kong...

And the National Board of Review has weighed in, naming Good Night & Good Luck as the year's best film. Their complete top ten: Brokeback Mountain * Crash * Capote * A History Of Violence Good Night, and Good Luck * Match Point Memoirs of a Geisha Munich * Syriana Walk the Line...

The Broadcast Film Critics Association's Best Picture nominees are: Brokeback Mountain * Crash * Capote * Cinderella Man The Constant Gardener Good Night, and Good Luck * King Kong * Memoirs of a Geisha Munich * Walk the Line The starred titles above are those that appear in both...

Roger Ebert has given King Kong 4 stars and called it one of the year's best films (see the Kong thread for a quote). This one is looking more and more like a BP nominee (and likely 8-10 noms totals, since it will pick up a boatload of craft noms). And Quentin, I wouldn't be surprised to see...

If this holds, MHP could well trump the Small Serious films (all of which are admired but have engendered little affection) for the final slot. Hmmm... mull this over for your final five: Brokeback Mountain King Kong Mrs. Henderson Presents Munich Walk The Line

    Oscar Watch 2005 - pre-awards discussion

Things are definitely starting to come together. Initial reviews on Munich are guardedly positive. Nothing that would cause it to drop out of contention. Waiting for more reviews on it and The New World. In: Brokeback Mountain Munich Walk The Line All three of these seem inevitable at...

I agree, the BP nom will be a tough get for Capote. However, the film is worthy of it whether it happens or not. I am REALLY looking forward to Walk The Line this weekend. By all accounts Best Actor this year will be a battle between Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix.

Just saw Capote (finally) and I have to agree. He's as locked as Jamie Foxx was last year. Also, I thought the film itself was brilliant. I hope it manages to snag a BP nom.

Poland gave a bad review to Rent last week; this week Wells comes out and says "the buzz is wrong", and that Rent is great. Watching these guys snipe at each other (check out Poland's blog for some in-depth Wells-bashing) is more entertaining than many films. ;)

D'oh! How could I have forgot all those dual noms, including Clint just last year?? :b

Kong is a Universal pic, so no conflict here for New Line. Bello probably has a better chance than Mortensen, if only because Best Actor is, as usual, very crowded (see Adam_S's post above). This film's going to be a hard sell with the Oscar crowd.

Haven't checked in here in a while... Jeff Wells also noted the rising buzz for Syriana and Clooney's performance. It's a longshot for sure, but could Clooney capture noms for Actor & Director? I think the last time that happened was 1977, when Woody Allen scored both nods for Annie Hall...

Hmm. I remember walking out of Robert Mulligan's brilliant but little-seen The Man In The Moon (which featured Witherspoon's extraordinary debut performance) over 14 years ago and saying to my friend "that little girl's going to win an Oscar some day". I'm sticking with that prediction.

No doubt, Elizabethtown has come out of Toronto pretty much dead as a major awards contender. It's not just Poland, either. Mrs. Henderson Presents, OTOH, looks like a big winner out of Toronto, with many slotting Judi Dench as a Best Actress lock. Bob Hoskins is getting Supporting talk...

Here's my early thoughts, by film: The Constant Gardener I'll repeat here what I said in the discussion thread - at least 8 nominations are in store for this great film: Best Picture Best Director Best Actor (Ralph Fiennes) Best Actress (Rachel Weisz) Best Supporting Actor (Bill...
