That's an erroneous piece of info that has been circulating for years and years - pure myth. Andy Williams was indeed considered, but they let Miss Bacall sing her own song in the end. And the film was TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT. Miss Bacall does her own, very unprofessional singing in both films...
She was also dubbed in THE HOODLUM SAINT (46) as a nightclub singer. The wonderful Peg La Centra dubs Ida Lupino in both THE MAN I LOVE (46) and ESCAPE ME NEVER (47) - a perfect match if there ever was one. I wish Miss La Centra would have spared us again in ROAD HOUSE (48) though.....;)
Yes, quite a few actresses who were always (or nearly always) dubbed in films wound up singing in Broadway musicals or recording albums later on in their careers. Go figure! ;) Miss Totter always admitted she could not sing, so her singing was dubbed in numerous films although none of them...
The wrong dubber is listed for Montalban in ON AN ISLAND WITH YOU (a frequently republished mistake from another source) - it was actually Leo Rojo. Montalban was also dubbed for all his big-voiced songs in LATIN LOVERS (53). As for Ann Sheridan, she sang for herself in almost all her films...
Thanks - I am very familiar with this list - quite a few inaccuracies in there though, repeated from erroneous sources - but a good beginning and it HAS been corrected (but not on-line) by its fine author since publication. Finding and identifying voice doubles in all pictures (pre-1970)...
Lucy is dubbed by Miss Grafton in all the MEET THE PEOPLE numbers for any actual singing. The marvellous Sally Sweetland sang for Joan Leslie in all her films between 1942 and 1945 (except CINDERELLA JONES, that one was Louanne Hogan, Jeanne Crain's regular vocal standby). I had the good fortune...
I always thought Gloria Grafton was her best match in both BEST FOOT FORWARD and MEET THE PEOPLE. Trudy Erwin (who had dubbed her in TOO MANY GIRLS) initially recorded Lucy's solo for BEST FOOT, but her version was scrapped when it was felt Gloria Grafton was a better match. I think the match in...
Loved the reviews as always, Ken.:emoji_thumbsup: Martha Mears (the most frequently used voice double in American film history) also supplies the vocals for Miss Ball in THE BIG STREET by the way. That's Lucy singing herself in DANCE GIRL DANCE and in the "Friendship" finale from DU BARRY...
