Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

Still ticked at the DVD not including a commentary track? Refusing to buy any potential new double dip just for a commentary track (not that such an option actually exists...)? Hail Darren

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

Jeff, It was in the forums, and it's not worth digging through. He used it as a blunt instrument to beat up on folks who disagreed (caveat: Devin is a good writer, and a good champion for many films - but he uses the boards like a sanctimious bully :D ). Like I said, doesn't matter to much...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

Jefferson, via long debates on the chud forums, their main reviewer pointed out time and again (in an insulting and perfunctory manner) that Future Tom being real was DA's interpretation, based on his discussion of the film with him. You'd have to read chud to get that. I didn't include that...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

I'd say more than a crack...especially since it's the interpretation the writer/director himself believes, according to interviews. The last scene could all be in his head as Future Tom ;) Who knows? There is absolutely evidence to support both of these interpretations and more...I don't think...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

I think the film leaves it ambiguous...but I wouldn't say very ambiguous. Again, the film language makes it clear the past is Izzy's book and the present is Future Tom's memories. I would even argue that it taking Future Tom hundreds of years to accept it *is* thematic. Humans STILL don't...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

Just filmmaking langauge, on my end, Rich. The opening sequence goes until Izzy stops writing, and then segues directly to Future Tom (not present Tom). Transitions take place from the present to the future in enough ways to make me think the present is Tom's recollections. That said, I don't...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

I believe the past is the novel, and represents Tommy's opinion on death. The present and future are "real", in that Future Tom is Tommy 500 years down the road. I also don't think the "what's real" discussion is terribly critical to the film. What's real is that Tommy has to come to terms...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

Failed being the operative word. Give it a few days, and watch it again. It'll work even better. The weird stuff will be less weird (and will start to make sense), and the rest of it will be as beautiful as you remember. Glad you finally saw it.

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

Nice article. Only major new news is Noah, but I'll take it (between rumors of the boxing movie...or the ballet movie). Whatever the guys does, he's earned a lifetime free pass from me as a fan. Glad he made The Fountain the way he did, with the actors he did :) Only two weeks to go for us...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

I'm only buying it on HD (or Blu-Ray), so I am hoping it's day and date. Barring that, I'll wait, but it won't be easy. I'm pretty sure it'll find it's way to high def soon. Tim, I'd love you to be right...but I wouldn't bet money on it. There is plenty of good stuff in March to keep us happy...

I saw Bond, Deja Vu, and The Fountain. Then I saw The Fountain a second time :)

His little myspace blog said May 15th...so I expect to get it in mid-May. Sorry Tim!

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

My good, good friend...you will regret that :) The score is the best of the past few years, in my opinion. I doubt it will win the award (or the Oscar), but I do hope it gets the big nomination. I see Hugh Jackman is getting the shaft from all corners, as is the rest of the film, but that...

Happy to see the score among the numerous misfires and crappy noms the GG handed out.

I can't praise the score enough. Masterful work. I just got the "book" talked about earlier. Can't wait to check it out :) Glad you liked it, Chris. If you can find the time...a second viewing is better than the first :D

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

Rich, I know I can't say it went over your head :) I agree that the film is simple. I think that is part of the beauty. I think Quentin was correct when he said the film was about the human (and Western philosophy) part of that equation. I think the emotional journey is critical, and why the...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

I've had that book in my cart for weeks, Mike. I pulled the trigger last night. I thought the visual effects were extraordinary. Better than CG in the way that practical effects usually are.

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

Some thoughts, stolen from someone who'd seen the film more and discussed it with the director (from CHUD): Present Tom exists in flashbacks for future Tom. The film uses specific cinematic language (Tom's memories, the transition to the present...) to make that connection. Tomas exists in...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

I took in a second viewing today, and about 2/3rds of the way through, I quit attempting to make the narrative fit (which is still a fun and meaningful game) within itself, and I just "went with the flow". It's a deeply emotional film, and structured to allow various interpretations...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

It's in English ;) I see your point...sort of. But there is a difference between being UNABLE to process data...and being unwilling. Walkout's are those who are unwilling :D Haggai's explanation of the structure is correct. I think the end will lock into place a little tighter on subsequent...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

Chris, paying money to see The Fountain, and then walking out because it isn't a generic narrative story, makes you a moron :) Not liking it is perfectly acceptable. As Mike pointed out, the theme/message is a very difficult one for Western audiences, and the film allows no hiding from it within...

Well, I used iTunes. Cheaper, and already on my iPod. According to websites, the score is out, though good luck finding it. Half of my Best Buys have it...half don't. According to the "Store Inventory", at least.

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

I seriously can't wait to see this again. I also greatly preferred the film, because the imagery is superior than to the GN. It's a puzzle box, and so many images relate back to one another. The stories almost fold in upon each other. I have let go of the tepid and vitriolic critical...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

Graphic novel...finally read. I sounded like a broken record in here. It's nice to finally rectify that. Well, the GN is basically the movie. Spoilers (for both the GN and the film): The main differences are: 1) The ending is slightly tweaked in the film. In the film, Tommy lays the seed...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

SPOILERS That was exactly my interpretation while watching Steve. Tomas is how Izzy sees Tommy, and Isabel how Izzy sees his quest. Tom (future) is trying to get his wife's "body" to the nebula. I assume the tree grew over where she was buried, based on the story she told him. Tommy (present)...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

I agree the film was shot very intimately. The frame didn't encompass the entire actors' faces in many of the shots. The camera was very close. Mike, I'll be reading the GN tonight or tomorrow. I can't wait. Finally being able to read the Wired article Mike linked, the Nebula scenes cost...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

In lieu of a discussion thread, I can't just let the film percolate in a vacuum :D Here is a very solid interview with DA: Anyone notice that Queen Isabel's dress has ornate artwork resembling roots around her legs :) So many references to stars and trees and water...all representations...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

Odd. I've read several folks claiming it's the best of the year :) I learned a few years ago that when a sci-fi movie is completely serious and emotionally honest with the premise, it's called pretentious. Many folks want their fantasy/sci-fi films to wink and have a sense of "place". I...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

It's not really fair to compare a Star Wars film to an Aronofsky film. Let's be honest...while there certainly were some artistic leanings in the Star Wars films, the later films were clearly also intended to sell figures, sprinklers, tie-ins, comics, video games, notebooks, models, etc. The...
