    Spider-man 3 - On Going Developments

I felt the same...it was any city, USA, and that's a mistake. It felt like a backlot NYC, and that misses a big reason why 1 and 2 worked. I also agree about the swinging. I didn;t mind losing it on the final sequence (though I missed it at the time), but I would have made up for it elsewhere...

    Spider-man 3 - On Going Developments

I missed the discussion, but I consider 300 a morality tale. Equating it to Wild Hogs is misleading, a straw man argument. Frankly, the forgiveness theme was handled in a Hallmark film starring Dean Cain a few weeks ago. Having a good theme doesn't make a film good anyway. As stated above...

    Spider-man 3 - On Going Developments

I watched a good chunk of Spidey 2 today. And it's a great film. It really is. Very strong script, very tight direction, very emotionally involving. It's not rose-tinted nostalgia speaking. It's a 4 star film, one of the finest in the (for Holadem) genre :)

It's hardly a defense, Brent. Just pointing out that often the same behavior that is championed by some is often criticized in a different milieu. Like you, I've also experienced both types, and BOTH annoy me. Among genre films, I consider SW fans the worst at the "cheer for almost no reason at...

    Spider-man 3 - On Going Developments

I'll respond to this. I know Travis isn't being specific, but I've heard this response to the criticism dropped enough times in the last two days that I think it merits a response. No movie reviewer is completely subjective. But bollocks to the suggestion that the negative reviews are from...

    Spider-man 3 - On Going Developments

    1) H, they use footage from 1 and 2 for the opening credits. Not nearly as lovely as Alex Ross art. but the opening credits are fine. 2) Terry, I almost agree with that, because that was my favorite part of Spider-Man 1, and it's my favorite part of the movies period. But I still loved the...

H, A "nerd" film. Sci-fi, fantasy, super-hero... Genre. Nerd, Chuck

Yes, it's better than those. No, it's not bad. Just very mediocre. It does have some VERY bad moments and some VERY good ones. The ratio is not nearly as favorable as in previous installments.

Some thoughts, after a workday. My review stands, doubly so after thinking about it. Seems to be a common response as well :frowning: What disappoints is that the theme "explored" would be a great one. Either Venom or Sandman could have made it work. But both, plus everything else lent weight...

    Spider-man 3 - On Going Developments

Batman Begins used the villains organically, established a connection between them, and maintained a balance. Raimi shoehorned in a second villain at the producers request. BIG difference. On my way to the theater, but I'm only marginally excited. The film should impress me...I'm not...

    Spider-man 3 - On Going Developments

Well, the new Spidey trailer is attached to 300, and I liked it OK. Spider-Man has usually been characterized by great visual and dramatic sense in the publicity department (images and trailers). This trailer was kind of dull. It was certainly the VENOM trailer, as that's ALL it was. No May, no...

    Spider-man 3 - On Going Developments

Well, we do give passes to our favorites, but some of us are extra-critical...when the debates hit though, you got to back up your opinions :) I got buttraped in the Kong thread for like three days straight. But it was worth it. And I was vociferous in my criticism of the later LOTR films (when...

    Spider-man 3 - On Going Developments

The Spider-Man 2 plot is wildly different than Supes 2 (the villain and motivation), with the key exception of Spidey losing his powers - which is also from the comics, well before Supes 2 ever hit screens. I agree they are similar, but that's because it's a common theme for heroic stories. You...

    Spider-man 3 - On Going Developments

The media doesn't care about effects at all :) Not in the least. As for why Spidey gets a pass...it earned a $100M in it's first weekend, the first movie ever to do it. It tracks MUCH better with women than the entire rest of the genre put together (except MAYBE LOTR), and the character is more...

    Spider-man 3 - On Going Developments

The effects were sketchy (though Spidey 2 had great effects...their challenges were far beyond those of the competitors), I agree. But the action was good, and the dramatic scene with Aunt May was excellent. I hope the effects get better, but they don't have to be photo-real for the film to...

    Spider-man 3 - On Going Developments

I'll wait to see an official version. The marketing team behind the Spidey films is probably the best in the world. They know how to use posters and trailers, they know their audience. I hear the new "trailer" is ridiculously good.

Gorgeous. Love that the Spider-symbol changes with the color. The legs get more aggressive. Sony's marketing for these films has always been top-notch.

    Spider-man 3 - On Going Developments

I'd love to have seen it on the big screen. But I got 6-7 LONG commercials, and three trailers: Lady in the Water (Which I have no interest in after the fellating tone of the trailer towards the director - considering I know he controls his own trailers, or used to, it's a real turnoff)...

    Spider-man 3 - On Going Developments

That's a great teaser. But that's expected from the Sony camp on Spidey 3. They know how to market these. Sandman looks great, and the final teaser shot is more interesting than anything the comics did with him. Looking forward to seeing it on the big screen tonight (and the reaction).

    Spider-man 3 - On Going Developments

The 90's were interesting. When we talk about the 90's, we really mean the early and mid-90's. There WERE bright spots, even in the big three (of four). 7 talented creators formed an imprint for creator-owned work, and much of it was brilliant. Of course, it wasn't the 7 artists at Image. It was...

    Spider-man 3 - On Going Developments

Amusingly enough, when I first saw McFarlane art, I swore he was Art Adams. My first artist crush was Art Adams (Longshot, and the X-Men Asgard annuals). He had a hyper-detailed style that still maintain solid proportions and anatomy, while being artistically creative. My second crush was...

    Spider-man 3 - On Going Developments

Venom: I like the idea of the character, and I loved his first appearances in ASM. I hated what he became, and he sort of represents the truly awful 90's to me. A time I simply left comics, because they all started to look the same, read like shit, and embarassing to purchase. Like strongbad...

    Spider-man 3 - On Going Developments

While many comic fans might think Venom is a big draw, a huge portion of Spider-Man's film audience will have NO idea who or what he is, nor will they care. Anyone who has read a comic with Venom would already be hitting opening weekend anyway. An appearance by a B-tier villain most popular...

    Spider-man 3 - On Going Developments

Mike, That would be fine by me. I'm staying away from script reviews or story spoilers. I trust Raimi to make the right decision, visually. I was just hoping for the cooler look of the black costume. Differentiating it would be smart. And maybe there are permutations of it. What matters is...

    Spider-man 3 - On Going Developments

All of that is fine and well ;) but why not go whole hog on the costume...it's supposed to be sleeker. This looks good, but not as good as it could look. Recasting is not a major problem for me (post-3), but the director is going to be critical. Should be interesting, Chuck

    Spider-man 3 - On Going Developments

Couple of thoughts: 1) That's a great image, as expected with their marketing 2) I would have preferred the black suit to have the big white spider, and no webbing. This looks like a black version of his standard suit. 3) IF they do use Venom, they need to really rework the story, but...

    Spider-man 3 - On Going Developments

Except for the fact that 95% of the country has NO idea who Venom is. He's a famous Spidey villains from the dark days of the 90's, and is good for ONE story only.

    Spider-man 3 - On Going Developments

Captain Stacy was a great character. It'd be nice to see if he plays a role in the film. Ideally, he should have played a role (albeit minor) in the previous films, but what can you do.

    Spider-man 3 - On Going Developments

Scorpion is a B-lister. Sandman at least presents a real powerhouse and visual treat. I have no problems with the black suit...I think it'd look great (and be easier on the effects folks). But I'm no fan of Venom. Too much backstory. Too much crappy 90's luggage. Though Venom circa ASM...
