I liked DS9 but I just don't see it being syndicated again or making it to Blu but I hope it does for those that want it. I remember how hard it was just trying to see the final season of DS9 because only one station in the Atlanta area was carrying it and the time wasn't great. I think the...

I found it to be almost all commercial movies, not just the blockbusters that pretty much follow one of a few formula plotlines. Try watching 2 movies a night for 2 straight weeks. By the time you get to the second week it will be like "Seen it, seen it, same as movie 1, night 2 but with the...

You have a giant space probe come to Earth from somewhere out past the Klingon Empire looking for dolphins and indirectly causing the Earth's destruction. Kirk and crew must go back in time and get some dolphins from SeaWorld. That way no one can argue it is anything like Star Trek IV since 1)...

I'm talking just about the US. It really did seem like it should have approached $150M domestically and it wasn't even close.

I'm curious what segment of the demographics isn't watching this movie in typical big opening weekend numbers. The theaters seemed rather full from reports here. My daughter was telling me that everyone she knew at the high school was going and even my dad went to the theater and he normally...

Captain / Lord Garth makes more sense. Chess -> Queen to Queen's level 3 detonated -> Garth had developed an incredibly powerful explosive and he wanted to take Starfleet in a new direction, a violent one. It also was his personality from the start so it makes sense he would be very similar in...

Are there so few people that Hollywood considers talented that basically five guys run everything?

I have always taken it a face value. Interesting take on it.

I don't get the sense of goof off that you did. He may have been a bit unconventional but not always flippant or lazy. I expect the intention of the filmmakers was for us to believe he went in whole hog with the serious intention of finishing in 3 years by working hard but had to bypass...

I think the troublemaker and authority issues is a bit of an exaggeration with what is up on the screen. I see him as a bit more direct and not following "proper procedure" to get what he wants more than just simply an a**. The movie doesn't really show either way whether he is making enemies...

There is the deleted scene of him before he went on the joy ride in the car that first, should not have been deleted and second, explained he was a top student and always following the rules. I think that was short enough not to be cut and a critical scene that explains the joy ride and much of...

I don't think that is correct. The Vulcans have some control over what information is exchanged and Spock only discussed what happened in the last few weeks, not his entire life story. I am taking the "I have and always shall be your friend" in this universe to simply mean that when doubt...

McCoy wearing a cadet uniform the entire time you see him at the academy pretty much gives that away. If he started as a commissioned officer (the normal thing that would happen) he most likely never would have seen Kirk a second time, let alone become good enough friends with him to help him...

If that is what he was truly going for then he never should have cast Karl Urban as McCoy. My take on it is McCoy is much older and we just need to ignore the sillyness of "cadet McCoy" piece that make absolutely no sense just so McCoy and Kirk can be friends early. I took Pine as 21-22...

Sulu was short-changed in the second season only because George Takei was busy filming The Green Berets, which I believe went way over schedule so Chekov got most of the situations Sulu was supposed to get. George Takei does mention that he was really disappointed to lose all those...

Why do you think they are not playing older than the rest of the cast? McCoy is a full doctor, married and divorced, and clearly mid 30's. Scotty is out of the academy for who knows how long. Even Spock has graduated the academy and is helping out at the academy but it is unclear just how...

I'll toss in my two cents on this one. As has already been stated, the actors are in fact around 10 years older so that part is still intact. The real issue is the whole notion that McCoy, an experienced 38 yo medical doctor would even go through the academy like a cadet, which is really a...

Star Trek films on Blu-Ray... what we know so far

While we only saw 10-12, in the episode he had the rest woken up and it took a lot more than 10-12 to take over the ship. Also, do you really think Kirk would have marooned a bunch of kids? There is no indication there were any children on that prison ship. All talk was there were 70-80 men...

Not that this thread is a full on discussion of ST movie plots, I had always wondered what justification the makers of ST II had to have Khan be the only adult of appropriate age of the original crew and the rest be a bunch of early 20 somethings. The whole "Save your breath. These people have...

I agree that models still look better for the simple reason is they still can't get CGI lighting on a texture correct. It is always that the texture is too smooth/plastic like or they just cannot get a realistic shading that looks like light bouncing off a real non-smooth surface. While some...

While I hope they would delay it, I am sure movie release dates are far more about quarterly revenue. If rushing Star Trek 2012 out too early causes it to only get $175M instead of $225M, I'm sure they would do that if they need the $175M from the summer receipts. Plus if they already have...

The new Star Trek 2012 sure sounds like it is going to be TMP all over again. The release date is the release date and cut/kill whatever you have to to get it out on time.

Another thought on cost. Toshiba was paying for some work to be done on TOS so they could have the exclusive in HD-DVD. Some have said that payment was only for the actual mastering on disc but it seems to me that cost is peanuts compared to the cost of creating new HD masters with new effects...

If they redo TNG in HD, then great for those who want to buy it. I just can't see the economics of it if Blu-ray is the main reason. TOS actually had the advantage of only being 3 seasons so the cost of owning the complete set was $200-$250, not a small amount but reasonable for many. TNG on...

Since they have the voice track, if they wanted to come out with something "new" they could redo TAS in CGI or new animation and put that on the air for some decent ratings. I wonder if they will ever consider completely redoing the animation for TAS?
