Johnal, The price drop is most likely because it is being discontinued. A year is about the life of a model in electronics. Glad your cat is better and it was something treatable. Been down that road with a dog that came down with auto-immune hemolytic anemea at 11 years old.
Jonal, I've got a whole house surge protector at the fusebox. My in-laws had lighting strike a nearby powerline and fry several thousands of dollars worth of computers and other electronics. We were able to put it while building for only a couple hundred bucks.
Johnal- Sorry to hear about your CDs. Glad you enjoyed what you heard. You're doing the right thing in listening to different speakers and figuring out what sound you like.
Jonal look back at the link to Onecall I gave you. The 7200 is under $800 there. Do want just a plain ol' surge protector or are you looking for a power conditioner? DId you get to go listen at Cutis' place?
Charles I looked at my archived e-mails from NHT dealers when I was searching before deciding on Ascend. I was wrong the dealers preferred the SB1 to the SB2. Not the SB2 over the SB3
Most NHT folks prefer the SB2 to the SB3. There is a whole lot a reviewer speak in that review but from reading some hints like the quotes, "I felt the SB3 were a bit hollow sounding during some passages(they have a mild bass peak in the 80-100hz range..." and "Of course some listeners might...
The NHT package at Onecall is a good deal. If you read The $ensible Sound review the reviewer considers the Ascend CBM-170s to be neck and neck with NHT's M6s. That is quite a bit higher up the NHT line from the Super 1s.
Johnal, Get the HK 7200. It is what is going to make you happy and it's a great price for it. Also it will make a good pre-amp/processor later if you need(want) to get a more powerful amp later. The HK digitals do not use the TI chipset that is making the Panny digitals the rave. Ascend...
Johnal, The Pannys are under $300. It a whole new thing with digital amps. If you can get to Curtis' he has the HK7200. It appears the Ascend Forum is down right now. There is a thread there with the thoughts of someone who has the Panny XR25 and Ascends. Those NHTs are nice but...
Johnal, You really can't judge a speaker by specs alone. Cabinet size, driver size, driver quality, crossover, porting, etc. will all contribute to how a speaker sounds and the specs don't tell you how those thing contribute to the sound. Since you have a background in music, listening is...
The reciever is a fine choice. I'll suggest a neutral(which means it doesn't color the sound) speaker known for its vocal reproduction based on your background. Ascend Acoustics seems like a good match for you with a sub it will be a bit more than $1K but under $1500. You can find more info at...
