Richard:
The other discrepancy in the "turn back time" ending of the Donner Cut:
if he reset time to the point right before the missile smashes into the Phantom Zone, wouldn't the missile smash into the Phantom Zone again? They should have showed him diverting the missile just before it hits
Sean:
That particular scene is actually screen test footage, which I presume was directed by Donner.
Loved the Donner Cut overall. I don't know that it will be my "preferred" version of II, since it doesn't mesh with what Singer did in Superman Returns, but I will certainly own it and watch...
My preference for Donner's vision was never because Lester used too much cheese, but because Donner just put better images and situations on screen.
Should be getting the Donner Cut in the mail today...can't wait to give it a spin (after I watch Superman Returns with my wife, who's never seen it).
What do you mean by the fact that it is presented as a "finished" film? Does the mere fact that they released it on DVD make it a "finished" film? Did you really expect that the quality would be the same as S:TM or SR?
Derek:
In all fairness, they are marketing the DVD as the "Richard Donner Cut" and anyone following its progression was well aware that there would be rough edges.
My expectations were very low from the beginning. This is an ambitious project which was, from its inception, virtually impossible to complete with any degree of polish.
It's a curiosity to me and nothing more...I never expected it to replace the Lester version.
What a night and day difference between Warner going all out for the fans in this case, and Lucasfilm doing the bare minimum for the fans in the case of the original versions of Star Wars.
No Lucas basher here, either. I love all six films. But the difference is stunning...the effort that...
I think the fundamental reason why Donner didn't come back is because he never finished filming the Superman II scenes on the original shoot. Once the first movie was in the can, didn't the Salkinds basically force the production to shut down?
Box office: advantage Ratner (though, truth be told, most of that comes from the foundation laid by Singer...I bet Singer's X3 could have flirted with $275-300M domestic)
Critics: advantage Singer.
HTF reaction: advantage Singer (my reading anyway).
You can only make that statement if you...
Travis:
I mostly agree. II was great at the time because of all the action, I think. And the villains were much more menacing. But in time the artistry of I has won me over. It's a bit like ESB and ANH, really...as a kid, I always liked ANH better, but as an adult I started to like ESB more.
