Dave/Aaron: Others (such as myself, Robert Anthony, and Seretur) have expressed why the midis do not change the nature of the Force, etc. Instead of rehashing them here, I would just encourage you to read them.
Dave: That's cool, but I think that once you get over your initial reaction to the scene, and think about the concept, the idea makes a lot of sense, even if the execution is lacking.
Carlo: Lucas had to show something inherently special about Anakin that would be passed onto his kids EVEN IF HE NEVER MET THEM. And, once again, you have to understand that the midis are NOT the force. The midis are the intermediary between a person and the Force. Their presence or...
Bryan: However stout that view of the Force was (and I admit that it has its charms), that pretty much went out the window with ESB and ROTJ. Once Lucas made Luke the son of Anakin, with Leia his sister, we were clued into the fact that there was something genetic about the Force. I'm not...
I guess I'm somewhat to blame for the devolution into the old PT v. OT debate, since I was the one who said that it made perfect sense for Lucas to do the SEs, in order to make them mesh with the PT. And, as this thread has proven once again, the way you answer that question largely depends...
Carlo: If his intention was solely to go back and fix the perceived "mistakes" in the original films, then I agree with you that they were failures from the get go. But, revising them to make them flow more smoothly with the prequels, well, that's where they succeed in my opinion. Of...
That comment really rang true to me. I completely understand it and I share it. That's why I am waiting for him to release the OOT in anamorphic with a decent transfer, because they deserve better.
Josh: You just have to keep in mind that we are not the intended audience of the SEs. Lucas undoubtedly had a number of different motives in mind with his changes, but one of them was to make the OT mesh with the PT. Yes, we found some of the changes jarring, but if he didn't do SEs at all...
They captured the nostalgia for me. In fact, the additional parts (sans Han shooting first) were like being able to soak in the richness of the SW universe all over again. But, of course, your mileage may vary. Glad you are enjoying the OOT releases.
You probably made a good choice. I just finished the PT version of the Lego Star Wars game tonight, and I had an absolute blast. I have to wait until early November (my birthday) to get the OT version.
I prefer the SEs, but would pay $$ to have good transfers of the OOT. But I just don't watch them enough to justify the $$ right now, which could be better spent on things like the Donner SII cut or the Blade Runner boxset.
Hold fast, Tim. I had Episode IV in my hands last night and put it back on the shelf. For me, I just don't watch my versions of the OOT enough to justify buying these, which would be only a marginal upgrade over the versions I have. Only an anamporphic, restored version of the OOT is worth...
Whatever plans Lucas may have had for 7-9, they surely were scrapped after he wrote the story for ESB and Return of the Jedi. Originally, I think Lucas' plan was to have Luke kill Vader in 6, but the Emperor survives. Then, Luke flirts with the dark side in 7-9, with Leia ultimately saving Luke...
Yep...and part of me thinks this is the result of some financial VP at Lucasfilm that needs a big revenue generator for this year. Add that to Lucas' disdain for the OOT, and you get non-anamorphic, crappy looking OOT "bonus features." But I doubt Lucas himself planned this release...I bet he...
Jack: I think Walt Disney himself was a bit like this. If you have POTC on DVD, watch some of the 1960s TV shows on the Disneyland ride. You will see Disney basically say that Disneyland will be a park that's "never finished" and that will always be improved. I sure wish I could ride some...
And yet not releasing the OOT in anamorphic does not change the success of the OOT when they were released, nor does it change the memories we have of that time in our lives. As I've said before, if we are ever going to get the OOT in proper DVD format, someone is going to have to convince...
Lucas has abandoned some of his original fans. There are plenty of people (like me) that saw the films in the theaters but prefer the SEs. Sure, I would love to have the OOT, and I'm willing to scream and yell a bit to get them, but I don't feel abandoned by this. Still, it's crap. And the...
As a big Star Wars fan, it pains me to say that I will be taking my money that I would have spent on this fall's DVD release, and will now be saving it for the mega super duper Blade Runner set--that will contain FOUR VERSIONS of the movie, all in anamorphic widescreen. This is how you do a...
