Yeah GotF isn't one of those "oh hey, what should I watch tonight...I know...GotF!" films. It's a very serious film, tackling tough subject, and which takes a heavy emotional toll on the viewer.

This got me thinking. I checked IMDb for Grave of the Fireflies release year, and it was 1988. I checked the 1989 Oscars. The Best Picture winner was Rain Man, and I would have chosen GotF over that in a heartbeat. The irony? 1989 Oscars didn't even have an Best Animated Feature Film category...
I look forward to your impressions. I've seen the shorts 3 or 4 years running now at the local Nuart, and this is the first time that I found all five to be uniformly good-to-great, with the top two I listed being IMO impressive tour-de-forces.
IMO the $10 for the live action short films is well worth the price. You don't need Bao if you own The Incredibles 2 on BD or 4K as I believe it came with it as a bonus feature.
I just watched the Oscar nominated shorts (live action and animated) at the Nuart theater in West Los Angeles. This is my third year doing so, after discovering that this theater shows both categories in their entirety the weeks leading up to the show.
