In fact, one could argue that the fire-sale type of hardware pricing that Toshiba engaged in helped to scare off other manufacturers from making HD-DVD players and played a part in their exit from the HDM race. Software prices are another issue :D

Way to "tell it like it is" :D Seriously, no one here expects HDM to supplant or equal DVD. Quite honestly DVD is good enough for many "average consumers". But LD thrived quite well with only about a reported 10% market share (though I knew easily over a hundred people prior to joining HTF in...

I'm a Blu supporter, but even I'll admit there's an easy explanation for this: B&M stores hardly ever (Fry's excepted) discount HD titles. Whereas new DVDs as loss-leaders nearly every week. Personally I still buy more twice as many DVDs as BDs, but 90% of my preorder business goes to Amazon...

Fully agreed on all counts. Those final numbers were shockingly low based on what I had heard HD-DVD supporters mention. Makes me really cringe at what the true BD player numbers might be (and I'm a PS3 owner). Regardless, now is the time to mobilize friends and family who are...

I too am surprised by the [rumored] speed of things. I can certainly understand if Toshiba wants to pull the plug, to pull it quickly so that they don't have to support a larger installed user base for a [seemingly] dead platform. But if they're smart they will go out of their way to take care...

Based on Michael Bay's comments, this doesn't surprise me. It wouldn't surprise me if he threw on a bunch of added extras either just to make his point (though I know this won't happen). :D

Well the whole "Toshiba dropping HD-DVD" story is gaining legs because Furnell Chapman just told me so on Channel 4 NBC news in L.A. I don't even remember any previous HDM stories on local news!

Which is it? Has the format war dropped prices or is BD overpriced? You're trying to argue both sides, which is the reality? And while one format may not lead to mass adoption, dual competing yet incompletely supported formats would all but guarantee there would not be mass adoption. History...

I'd love to see someone make a coherent and logical post about how two competing formats that have incomplete studio support and offer a product that is technologically close to each other can succeed in today's marketplace. One unified format, with complete studio support, is the only way to...

For those early adopters who bought into either HD format with "their eyes open" (i.e. knowing that either could lose), this is probably true. For those people who don't fall under that category, I'd expect a class action lawsuit similar to the one being filed against Samsung for their BD...
