And I never hear people complain about Lens Flare from John Carpenter(see: Christine, The Thing, Starman etc.) it is practically a staple in his films. And if I recall Spielberg had quite a bit in Close Encounters Of The Third Kind. No, flares are not a problem in my take on Cinema.

It doesn't bother me, but a friend of mine thinks Abrams is a joke for that reason alone(he finds it very distracting). Just for fun we skipped through ST Into Darkness, and the flare was overly excessive(some spots a lens flare lasted 4 seconds in a scene thus obstructing the view a bit). but...
