Obviously I can't complain at all about what we've been given, which is a marvel, and shows what can be done when you have people who CARE about their films (as opposed to Universal). But if I could add one thing, it'd be a commentary track, with Harris, Crisp, Raskin, Anne Coates, Omar Sharif...
Hey all,
this is a really basic question and hopefully not too dumb, but one I've been meaning to ask.
I've been to plenty of extremely well done theatrical screenings, such as the ones at Ebertfest where the expert projectionist is James Bond (his real name, and an alumnus of my grad...
There was definitely a lot of murmuring from people who didn't know what an overture or entr' acte was, and vocally expressed their displeasure at having to listen to it for several minutes before the main feature.
If I were doing the presentatin, I would scrap all the stuff that showed the new...
Okay, I just came from a screening of "Lawrence of Arabia," last night and here are my thoughts.
First, I must begin with the good: I am now sold completely on 4K as a means of exhibiting films. The quality was outstanding. The brightness, the rock-steady image, as well as the retained film...
If I owned a chain of theaters, I'd be calling each one, and asking the theater's specs, and if the manager couldn't tell me screen size, and the type of projection (35mm, 2k, 4K), he'd be fired on the spot.
Aieeee! The bloody theater I booked tickets to see Lawrence of Arabia at is now closed for a week because of some screwup with some ongoing renovations. Thank god a coworker mentioned it, because I sure as hell didn't get a courtesy email cinemark alerting me that, um, the tickets I bought...
Who'd you speak with? I called ahead to my local Cinemark (I live in KC), and of course the ticket person answer phones didn't know which form which (Can't blame a teenager for not knowing what 4K is), so I asked to speak with a manager. The one I referred to was very polite and professional...
I got my tixs for Thursday! Gonna see it at the Cinemark Palace in KC. I made sure to call ahead and spoke with a very polite manager, who confirmed not only that they are equipped with Barco 4K projectors, but that they also take care to switch out the lenses depending on if it is a 3D or 2D...
Hi All,
I know this question has come up, but I'm not sure if it's been resolved or not. Is it known if this Fathom Events screening of LoA on October 4 around the country will be a 2K or 4K? I'm eager to see this, but I've heard bad things about Fathom, which makes me wary.
If anyone can...
Oh wouldn't that be an evil tactic by the studios releasing these films...
For the cheap price you get 1.85 formatted. If you want the extra image area, it'll cost ya pal!
Foxy I viewed your link, and found it appalling! Someone should be fired for that shoddy work. I'll definitely be waiting a while to learn all the facts before I buy this set!
It is also rumored RH uses only Audioquest K2 terminated speaker cable for his sound system...

(seriously, read some of the reviews, they're hilarious!)
Criterion does this for all their release, in the liner notes or booklet included with each respective release, they state what kind of element(s) were used, whether they be OCNs, interpos, internegs, restoration negs, with what machinery the digitization was performed and at what native...
I never buy these box-o-crap editions, but when they said we get a 70mm film cell, I was sold.
Any idea where these come from? Do they come from an old print, or are they specially made I wonder?
Oh lord can we drop this? They haven't even released all the specs, and the blu-ray's not due til November. Relax until we have something in hand, and until then have faith that Mr. Crisp has done justice to LoA and Sir David.
I would disagree, for this reason: VHS was the best we had at the time, and DVD was a huge leap forward, so each has their place in consumer home video history...but blu-ray is the first format to really get near to capturing the quality and clarity of a film in its original state...the color...
I find missing frames charming in a way. They remind one of the fragility of the medium. That and I adore the visual "pop" you see in films where fades and dissolves are several generations removed from the rest, and you see the change in grain and resolution. Someday I'm going to make a...
I think for me, one of the great lost opportunities in cinema history was Lean's flim adaptation of "Nostromo." It would have reportedly been shot in 65mm black and white, and would've reunited Lean with Peter O'Toole, as well as featured Marlon Brandon in the cast. Lean was just a few weeks...
