I find it remarkable that this was the 8th year in a row that the Cubs' pitching staff lead the majors in strikeouts. I wonder if there has ever been a team to lead in one major offensive, defensive, or pitching category for that many consecutive years. (The Yankees probably led the league in...
Cubbies are looking good...though the bullpen is prone to regular implosions. My long-shot prediction is that Jeff Samardzija will be the closer by playoff time.
I saw a bunch of Manny highlights (and recent lowlights) on ESPN this morning, and it seems as though Manny is 100% at fault and has simply been a dick. Did Varitek and the other players try to get in Manny's face or did they sit by as he made a mockery of the game?
I haven't really followed the Manny saga in Boston...what happened? His numbers seem good, yet he was accused of quitting. I don't understand - with the history he's had with the Red Sox, why wasn't he beloved?
I wouldn't go that far...Morgan has some pretty good credentials. Being MVP twice during the peak of the Big Red Machine (and beating out teammates such as Rose, Bench, Griffey, Foster, and Perez) was no easy feat. However, I don't really understand why Morgan would have a problem with...
Were all the living HOFers invited? Some glaring absences were Nolan Ryan, Johnny Bench, and Joe Morgan. I thought the opening ceremonies were great...I had a lump in my throat watching Yogi throw the pitch to Girardi.
It seems many of the HR calls are incorrect because today's stadiums have all of these wacky configurations that can create optical illusions to the umps. As irregular as Fenway is, it's pretty clear if something is a home run. In Houston, however, they've got a VERTICAL line for part of the...
Eric Zorn of the Trib pointed out that the Cubs are cornering the market on players whose names end in O (or sound like O): Soriano Zambrano Soto Cedeno Blanco Theriot Fontenot The "Cubbos" are on fire at home (29-8). Here's hoping they can get better on the road.
I was surprised to hear this one...the last time the Cubs had the best record in baseball on June 1 (as they do now) was in 1908. (And we all know who won the WS that year.:))
MLB is going to have to do something about these shattering maple bats. There is at least one per game, usually where the shard of the barrel ends up by the pitcher. I wish they would just mandate good old ash. On a similar note, I couldn't believe my son's "coach pitch" team manager telling...
I can't believe how our 136 million dollar man (Soriano) has turned into a china doll after signing for the big bucks. He had two significant leg injuries last year (a hamstring and a quad), and in tonight's game he pulled his calf after doing his asinine "hop" prior to catching a routine fly...
Actually, the Tigers cannot point to injuries at all. Granderson's replacement has actually put up comparable (or better) numbers than CG. Their problem is atrocious starting pitching and absolutely no production from Sheffield, Ordonez, Jones, Thames, and Cabrera.
I will say that the fact it is occurring at the very start doesn't mean much (after all, I think the White Sox of 2005 had a 7-game losing streak near the end of the season).
Whoops! Looking at the Tigers' upcoming schedule, I think it is entirely possible they will be 10-19 around May 1. Batting IRod leadoff today was obviously not the answer, and the fans today were clearly not happy with the product the Tigers put out there.
It scares me to see the Cubs almost universally predicted to be division champs, especially when: - Kerry Wood has a good chance of coming up lame, probably at the worst possible time. - Derrek Lee seems to have lost all of his power. - The starting rotation has not improved...I don't have...
