I'd also like to add that it's always seemed pretty harsh that Lois wasn't willing to give him a lift back to the FOS, as absurd as that sounds.
I'm actually glad Donner left the Arctic Police scene out of his cut. I kind of wished it were still there the first time I watched it, but it is...
Re: The end diner scene:
It actually seems like both Superman: The Movie and The Donner Cut use some kind of "selective memory" in regards to Superman turning the world back in time. For example, Superman turns back time at the end of Superman: The Movie, yet Jimmy and Lois reference...
From what I read of the review (I dind't read it all to avoid spoilers), it is an excellent, level-headed assessment for this unique project. I especially expect a lot of disappointment for the high-def versions of it. I'm really surprised we're even getting that at all.
Yeah, I was kind of disappointed that there's not going to be a HD box set release (apparently, anyway). However, the announcement of the Donner Cut and S:TM soothed that disappointment pretty quickly. With those two releases and Superman Returns on HD, I'll be very happy come November.
Man, the set looks awesome. I'm getting Superman Returns on HD-DVD, but I may still get the set and just give away the Returns disc that comes in that. I don't know. I wish WB would at least give us a hint as to when we may see at least the first Superman movie on HD. It'd be a lot easier to...
I'd be more than happy to just pick up Superman: TM, Superman II (Donner and Lester cuts), and Superman Returns on HD. I can live without Superman III in HD, and not even the greatest HD transfer ever would get me to watch Superman IV again.
But the first two films are a must for HD, in my...
Are those customs, Jeff?
If so, you and Paul are killing me. :) My heart skips a beat when I see these because I'm anticipating these on HD more than anything right now.
Cool. It's good to know that they're coming to HD-DVD. Hopefully day and date with their SD counterparts; if not, I'll be more than willing to wait a little while. Just the fact that we know they're coming is good enough.
Paul, has the Donner Cut been confirmed for HD?
I know everything else has (the Reeve set and Superman Returns), but I haven't heard about the Donner cut.
I think that's simply the same press statement from a month ago. It's just showing all the titles being released on the day, but only 1-4 are being collected in the set.
You don't have to buy any set to get the cartoons. They'll be available with the Superman: The Movie and Superman II releases, which are coming out separate as well as in the box set.
Also, Superman Returns isn't part of the set anyway. :)
Well, in this case, doesn't it make less sense for things to be playing out like they are? I mean, you would think that since LFL doesn't have as many releases, but certainly the money, they would go all out on their one big release this year. On the other hand, Warners has all kinds of...
I don't think so. I mean, it goes to show that some studios out there are willing to go through tremendous lengths to please fans. I mean, this is a pretty big risk that WB's taken with this project. I can't imagine that a whole lot of people know about the Donner/Superman II situation.
On...
Exactly. If the Donner cut were part of a huge SII set, people would complain that they couldn't get it separately, and that they had to pay for something they didn't want, to get something that they do want.
Yeah, I guess you're right there. If anything, I can understand some people thinking that III and IV are under-represented. Other than that, I don't see what we're getting in November as underwhelming in the least.
I'll buy the set, the Donner cut, and Superman Returns. Going to be an...
But what could have possibly been on the second discs for those that isn't going to be included anyway? As far as we know, the extended cut of IV will never be released. I guess there's the TV version of part III, so I'll admit that would have been nice. But we aren't getting the television...
Why all the disappointment? WHV too NOTHING away with these releases. In my opinion, it's way more conveinient. Everything is released separately, but there's also a box set. Want just the Donner cut? Buy it. Want the Donner cut AND the other 4 new DVD's? Buy the set and the Donner cut...
It's also possible that the documentary being made during Superman Returns will be a part of this set too.
Edit: I see that Drew already mentioned this. I'll just add that I really hope it does get added to the set.
Wow, that's cool news for people who just want the Donner cut. The lack of Supergirl makes it all the more intriguing as to what could possibly constitute 14 discs in this thing. The fact that the original will be made available separately tells me that either we are getting the original cut...
I seem to remember an interview (also on IGN, I believe) where Donner wasn't even aware of the remix of Superman and seemed pretty upset about it. So maybe they will go back and give us the original soundtrack, even though it seems like Donner doesn't have much to do with this set.
I really hope that this is released on Blu-Ray the same day. I'll definately be buying this one on a hi-def format, though because this is definately something I'm not going to pay for in SD, only to replace it later.
With this news, the Superman anthology shot up to number one on my list of most anticipated releases this year. Even if Superman Returns ends up being a disappointment, at least it helped get this release.
