Stopping DVD purchases or upgrading dvd library to High Def.

I'm still buying DVDs, but not at the rate I used to purchase them. However, that has less to do with the impending HD-DVD/Blu-Ray formats than it does with finally having most of the films I want on DVD. In the past, there were big releases like Star Wars, The Godfather, Indiana Jones, etc. to...

No need to tell me as I'm already aware. Thanks, though.

A football game in HD compared to the same game in SD is not like comparing a reference quality DVD to HD. There are several DVDs in my collection that look close to Hi Def on my display and while I concede HD is better, it's not the night and day difference that SD cable is to HD cable.

Ernest, Actually I think we all DO get it. We're arguing over something that is several years away from even being relevant. I never said that HD-DVD or Blu-Ray wouldn't eventually be dominant formats, but I did say that it will be a LONG time before either or both of them can dethrone DVD...

Right now the switchover from analog broadcasts to HD is supposed to occur in 2006, but the FCC is proposing that it be pushed back to 2009 due to the slow adoption rate of HD by the general public. Nothing has been set in stone yet, but it looks highly unlikely that analog broadcasts will be...

Illegal to sell analog sets by next July, huh? Can we place bets on this forum because if so, you've got yourself a wager. ;)

Well, only time will tell, but do I expect a lot of resistance towards these new formats because people ARE sick of the changes and being "milked" by these companies every few years.

Stopping DVD purchases or upgrading dvd library to High Def.

Ernest, This is similar to DVD-A and SACD because those are superior formats technology-wise that haven't been adopted by the mass market due to the success of a dominant medium that people are happy with. Just because HD-DVD and Blu-Ray will be better than DVD, it doesn't mean everyone will...

Stopping DVD purchases or upgrading dvd library to High Def.

Don, Not everyone has a high end display or will buy a HDTV either. A lot of people who can't afford a brand new high definition television will buy the cheap converter for their old analog TV(s) when the analog signal is eventually cut off so the improvements of HD-DVD/Blu-Ray will mean...

Stopping DVD purchases or upgrading dvd library to High Def.

Sorry, but I just can't agree that these formats will catch on faster than DVD. There are too many factors in place working against the new formats to make that happen. Yes, eventually these HD formats will become the standard, but it will be a long, slow transition from DVD to HD-DVD/Blu-Ray...

Norm, I think you're severely overestimating people's desire to watch and record HD programming. High definition television has been very slow to catch on and it's not just going to explode overnight no matter how wonderful it is. For the past 3 years, DIRECTV has been saying how dozens of HD...

Blu-Ray and HD-DVD may EVENTUALLY take over the whole market, but it's not going to happen for at least 5-10 years. There's no way these new formats are going to be successful right off the bat and I still say they'll be a niche market for several years. Outside of the people here at HTF and...

Yes, price is going to be a KEY issue in all of this. I have no doubt that the first HD-DVD abd Blu-Ray players will be at least $1k and possibly(or should I say probably) more. Even more important, however, will be the pricing of movie titles. I'm guessing anywhere from $29.99-44.99 which will...

Stopping DVD purchases or upgrading dvd library to High Def.

Rich, That's exactly why I'm not going to stop buying DVDs now just because something better MAY be on the horizon. I suppose I could hold off on buying Return of the King EE and Collateral tomorrow because they might be available on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray somewhere down the line, but why...

Stopping DVD purchases or upgrading dvd library to High Def.

Ernest, Just because analog TV will be phased out in a couple years doesn't necessarily mean everybody will be buying a new HDTV. It's widely known that converters will be made available for analog TVs that allow you to pick up the HD signal so everyone isn't forced to go out an purchase an...

Obviously opinions are going to vary on this from person to person and since I'm not really a fan of projectors I can't speak as to how DVDs look on them. All I know is that there are a lot of DVDs that look fantastic on my set-up(infinitely better than VHS I might add) and even though HD might...

Don, I have a Panasonic 50" 7UY High Definition plasma mated to a Pioneer Elite DV-59AVi DVD player with HDMI so obviously I know a good picture when I see one. Like I said before, while I agree HD looks better than DVD, I don't think it's the night and day difference that DVD is/was to VHS...

Stopping DVD purchases or upgrading dvd library to High Def.

There are a lot of DVDs that still look absolutely amazing to my eyes and the whole "DVD is low-res and just doesn't cut it anymore" logic completely baffles me. If it weren't for DVD, you'd still be watching movies on VHS and Laserdisc praying for something that looked better so I think we...

I can't believe how many people here live for tomorrow instead of today. Who cares what format might be dominant 3 or 4 years from now? You may not be around to see it! There's no way I would deprive myself of titles that are available on DVD right now just because they might be offered in HD...

Stopping DVD purchases or upgrading dvd library to High Def.

My DVD buying days will be numbered when there's a one clear winner of a format in place(either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray, not both), when players are reasonably priced and when major titles are available(Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, Spider-Man, The Terminator, Die Hard...

I thinks it's going to be quite a while before players are $300 or less(especially since they're not even out yet).

Stopping DVD purchases or upgrading dvd library to High Def.

Nils, You're exactly right. I think a lot of us fail to realize that having a HDTV is either not important to or not economically feasible for a VERY large percentage of the people in this country. It may be a big deal to those of us here at HTF, but we are a very small group in the grand...

Stopping DVD purchases or upgrading dvd library to High Def.

Jean D, I completely disagree. The studios are making money hand over fist off DVD right now and they certainly don't want to kill the "golden goose" anytime soon. They're smart enough to know that an HD format will be a niche market for several years(which means titles will be priced...

I think another factor that many people are forgetting about is the cost of HD-DVD and/or Blu-Ray software. HD discs certainly aren't going to be $15.99 on Tuesdays at Best Buy like current DVDs. We all know that the next generation players are going to be very expensive at launch, but I think...

Stopping DVD purchases or upgrading dvd library to High Def.

Exactly, Seth. DVD will continue to be the most successful software format for quite some time while HD-DVD will be a niche market for at least the first 2 or 3 years of its existence.

No way I'm going to hold off buying upcoming titles like the Star Wars Trilogy, Heat: SE, Spider-Man 2, Return of the King: EE, Matrix Box set or the GoodFellas: SE I bought yesterday just because they MIGHT be released on HD-DVD someday. I think it's going to be quite a while before we see a...
