FWIW - I had an old Sony BR player I finally dumped due to no firmware updates, very slow load times, and having more and more discs that wouldn't play in that system. In all fairness, it was a very early model from when they still had composite video outputs.

Have you tried cleaning the disc?

I've never been bothered by letterboxing as long as that's the OAR. Pillarboxing on WS also doesn't bother me. If I were watching on a 4:3 set I'd absolutely not want that set in WS.

No "hideous looking black bars at the top and bottom of the picture" on my set... but it's a 16:9 HDTV. When I watch the BR I have "hideous looking black bars" on the side. ;)
