Talk me out of buying an Oppo BDP-93

If you're only talking about region-free for DVD on your Oppo, you can simply download the SuperDisk file (just google Superdisk and Oppo) to make your player region-free for DVD without having to install a hardware mod or pay anything. If you're wanting region-free blu-ray, I'm afraid the only...

Talk me out of buying an Oppo BDP-93

Is there something wrong with the 83? DVD upscaling looks fine to me. If you think the firmware needs improvement, have you contacted Oppo customer service? If there's a real issue that can be fixed with firmware, I'm sure they'd do it.

Talk me out of buying an Oppo BDP-93

Hmmm. I thought I remembered reading somewhere (either on a forum or Oppo's own literature) something about one of the DVD playback menu options that was a rarely-used feature on commercial DVDs. Could it have been something else? Odd that the feature was available in the BDP-83 but not it's...

Talk me out of buying an Oppo BDP-93

Are there very may DVDs that are encoded 24p, though? I thought that was part of why the option was left off of the earlier Oppo BD players. Speaking of, I just bought my third BDP-83 at an area pawn shop for $225! Wasn't really looking for a third one (was scouring eBay for used DV-981/983s)...

Talk me out of buying an Oppo BDP-93

I can't speak to how well it would handle a .mkv file, as I'm assuming that's not a properly-formatted DVD-VIDEO or Blu-Ray disc, but just a media file from your USB hard drive, rather than a commercial disc. Maybe it's something to do with the file format, how the file was encoded, etc...

Talk me out of buying an Oppo BDP-93

She said her TV is a Samsung, so that means it is not compatible with PAL (no US-marketed Samsung TV s are compatible with PAL. The only exception would be tuner-less sets that are sold as "monitors"). She should make sure her Oppo is set to NTSC. I'd heard from other sources it's probably best...

Talk me out of buying an Oppo BDP-93

Were you talking about Blu-Ray discs (such as 60hz vs 50hz ones), or playing foreign DVDs, though? Despite what some others may say, NTSC and PAL do still make a difference, even on HD displays, when it comes to standard-definition content. Some (like the Sharps, Sonys, etc.) can handle both...

Talk me out of buying an Oppo BDP-93

The only PQ difference you'll probably see is better-quality upconversion of DVDs, and better PAL to NTSC conversion of your R2 discs over your old player (if you had a region-free one previously), depending on how good that player's converter was. My old DVD player was a $50 Philips one, and...

Talk me out of buying an Oppo BDP-93

Mark (and others): If you need multi-region capability only for DVD, then you do not have to purchase a hardware mod, as I was previously told. All you have to do is download something called "SuperDisk" (Just google the two words Superdisk Oppo and you'll find it). It's a software...
