I can't speak to how well it would handle a .mkv file, as I'm assuming that's not a properly-formatted DVD-VIDEO or Blu-Ray disc, but just a media file from your USB hard drive, rather than a commercial disc. Maybe it's something to do with the file format, how the file was encoded, etc...
