This is a good point. The characters in The Thing are pretty thinly drawn (although not carboard cliches either), but that does nothing to damage the excellent film they are built around.

There are poor attempts at horror these days, but I would argue that we have plenty of small gems as well. I actually don't think there is any large difference in terms of the good to bad horror ratio today than there was in any other period. We're just picking and choosing the best of the past...
