Star Wars Ep. VII Megathread: The Force Awakens

If ever there was a movie to justify separate spoiler and non-spoiler threads like the old days, it's this one.

Star Wars Ep. VII Megathread: The Force Awakens

I'm going to have to be really careful the rest of the week, too. I was reading a New York Times article earlier today about the logistics of the massive world premiere in Los Angeles, and out of the blue they included a broad strokes plot summary in a couple sentences. No great surprises...

Got my tickets for a 3:20 PM show on Saturday! By the time I'd have gotten out of work Friday, it would have been too late to really enjoy the movie.

Great read, Kevin. Thanks for sharing it. I love the industry guild publications like that, because the articles go into much greater depth than general interest publications do.

Somehow I read that as a criticism. :)

Lin-Manuel Miranda, who is almost certainly going to win multiple Tonys this year for Hamilton (his musical about the United States's first Treasury Secretary), wrote it with Abrams over the past two months between shows.

Star Wars Ep. VII Megathread: The Force Awakens

None of the Star Wars movies so far really rank among the worst offenders for events in lieu of plot. Sure, they are chock full of spectacle, and a lot of that spectacle could be pretty interchangeable, but there's a always a plot going on in the foreground. I don't really have a problem with...

Star Wars Ep. VII Megathread: The Force Awakens

It looks like this movie is going to share a lot of elements with the original film, starting with an orphan abandoned on a desert world right through a quasi-Death Star weapon. That's fine; this series has always had cyclical qualities to its narrative. But I hope Episodes VIII and IX branch...

Star Wars Ep. VII Megathread: The Force Awakens

Thanks for sharing, both of you Sams. I'm excited that a double-size Star Wars issue of EW will be waiting in my mailbox come Friday. Interesting that Rey is there for Finn's fight with the crazy lightsaber guy. The trailers did a good job of hiding that fact (even though the Japanese trailer...

Star Wars Ep. VII Megathread: The Force Awakens

Wired has a good, in-depth interview with J.J. Abrams about the film Some particularly interesting quotes: On pulling off the feat of the original Star Wars to serve as both a self-contained experience and an entry point into a vast universe: "We wanted to tell a story that had its own...

Undoubtedly. But hopefully a far greater number of people will have their expectations exceeded!

Interesting idea. I thought the hand on the right handing off the lightsaber was Leia's.

Star Wars Ep. VII Megathread: The Force Awakens

So is this Rey accepting the lightsaber? On one hand, it's obviously a young, thin, white female, which would seem to narrow down the options to her. On the other hand, she's not wearing a robe like that anywhere else in the trailer, and those are awfully well manicured nails for a desert...

Star Wars Ep. VII Megathread: The Force Awakens

If I'm looking forward to a movie, I want to maximize my enjoyment the first time through, when it still has the potential to surprise. If I've just dragged my ass through six movies and now arrived at the main event, fried smelly and exhausted, I'm not maximizing my enjoyment. For those with...

Star Wars Ep. VII Megathread: The Force Awakens

I don't know that we'll see another movie in my lifetime that had the hype that The Phantom Menace had going into its release. Partly that's because it had been 16 years since the last film had come out, instead of 10. Partly that's because the then-most recent trilogy had been far more...

Star Wars Ep. VII Megathread: The Force Awakens

I loved that trailer. The thing I loved most about it is that in this new trilogy, with planet after planet ravaged by more than half a century of more or less continuous intergalactic war, the original trilogy has become just as much myth and legend to the young characters as it is to you or I.

Star Wars Ep. VII Megathread: The Force Awakens

I love the layout of the new poster, especially the dramatic juxtaposition of the light side and the dark side, with the baddie's unstable lightsaber and Rey's staff cutting the poster down the middle at the diagonal. I just wish it had been painted by Struzan (or someone with a similar style)...

It wouldn't shock me if your prediction turns out to be right, but the history of these books would suggest otherwise. The "Art of" books for Episodes II and III both came out in April, a month or more before their associated films came out. You just have to sort of avoid them if you want to be...

Star Wars Ep. VII Megathread: The Force Awakens

The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be published simultaneously with the film's release. I'm really happy they're continuing these. I have all three of the ones for the prequels, and they're some of my favorite mementos from those movies.

It's interesting that the two new characters featured most prominently in the promotional artwork, Finn and Rey, are also the two leads that pointedly don't have surnames...

If this got posted here already and I missed it, I apologize, but the American Federation of Musicians has an interesting interview with John Williams, in which he talks about his work on the new film. I guess it's been public knowledge since March, but I didn't realize until that interview...

Well, Struzan retired in 2008 after completing his commitments to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. If any project was going to lure him out of retirement, it'd probably be this one, though. And if not, there are a lot of talented painters out there who could ape his style...

Star Wars Ep. VII Megathread: The Force Awakens

Well, The Force Awakens didn't start principal photography until May of last year, roughly 19 months before the release date. If Episode VIII keeps to the same schedule, we're looking at a late October or early November start. The main reason for the extensive post-production time on the...
