comments on purchasing a cheap HTPC.

Only thing to worry about for now is the Blu-ray player - all the other kinds of content it sounds like you run will not be HDCP protected (downloads, streams, pictures etc.) HDMI solves that indefinitely, but as far as I recollect, component from the WMC box will work just fine up to 1080i...

No HDMI hookup on cox cable box motorola DCT2000

Depending on your cable company and the local plans you already subscribe to, an HD box could even be free. You should call them and inquire. It makes a huge difference and it definitely worth it.

Best Buy Bait and Switch on cables

Very valid points this is not true "bait and switch" - But frequently when doing setups, one does not have time to wait on things to come in the mail and therefore must resort to purchasing 3X priced items at local retail. I visited BB again yesterday and the Toslink cables are still there...

    High Def SAT Question

There are very few things that modulate HD onto Coax at this point - the ZeeVee device is the cheapest currently available. We (disclaimer as I'm mentioning the company I work for) Bocs, will be releasing a much cheaper version next year. Currently most people use clearQAM which may or may not...

Can someone decipher HDMI receiver "speak"?

Just a quick note that Best Buy has caught on that these terms are confusing and have started posting on each receiver in clear terms if it upscales, transmits audio over HDMI and whether inputs are assignable. Frankly, a great move on their part.

My dad has a question re: recording from DVR to DVD

Depending on the model of Comcast DVR you have, and depending on what shows you are trying to move, the firewire port is also a good option - moving the video to a PC. It is also "live" as opposed to a file copy but the quality will be better. If he is going to be doing a lot of moving in the...

Can someone please help me with these connections?

Right, the 1709 does not support audio over HDMI - that is a feature of the newer receivers Stephen recommended. - The Playstation has toslink (optical) audio that you can run to the receiver in the meantime. Good Luck

Best Buy Bait and Switch on cables

Just noticed on my last BB trip, that many of the EXACT same cables are stocked in multiple locations in the store. Specifically Toslink (optical digital audio) and HDMI cables... The exact same packaging, manufacturer, length, are found in the home theater section and the Playstation3 sections...

Recommended headphones that are good to listen with Blu-ray and DVDs???

The Bose noise cancelling product lines are all impressive. I typically use them for airplances/travelling, but apartment living can be noisy in its own category. They have both types - and they bring a lot of sound quality even around children.

    Best Media Streamer?

First - can't believe I missed this forum - just found a random link to this from AVS - what a waste... I'm particularly fond of the Boxee system myself and with the integration of Clicker (which has built in easy search of hulu and all the major network sites) I'm not sure anyone else can...
