Upcoming BCI Ultraman DVD is pretty suspicious . . .

The show did not have any closing credits whatsoever. All of the credits, as I said, are at the beginning. It was the same exact deal with all of the shows up to Ultraman Leo. The US version, however, had brief closing credit cards, crediting the series to "TBS Productions" (TBS, Tokyo...

Upcoming BCI Ultraman DVD is pretty suspicious . . .

I love the Japanese credits! Much more than the US opening. The credits from this series and Ultra Seven (which had a similar opening, as did some future Ultra Series) always had a Saul Bass feel to them (so did Ultra Q). The US version opening sequence (I can't call it a credits sequence)...

Upcoming BCI Ultraman DVD is pretty suspicious . . .

Yes, Ambassador Magma was indeed shot in 16mm, like Ultraman Ultra Q (the first of the Ultra Series) was shot in 35mm. The other Ultra Series up to Ultraman 80 were shot in 16mm, and the shows since Ultraman Tiga were shot digitally in D2 Video. (The newer shows are shot in HD widescreen.)

But that's just Powerslam's side of the story. The set that Powerslam did of The Space Giants was used from the Japanese LD release of Ambassador Magma (there's still no DVD release yet). Lakeside still has the original materials for the US version. (Powerslam used audio from TV recordings.)

Upcoming BCI Ultraman DVD is pretty suspicious . . .

The Space Giants (based on Osamu Tezuka's Ambassador Magma) was held up in a legal entanglement between Lakeside (the US distributor) and a small-time company called Powerslam Entertainment (which distributed illegal DVDs of the show). Sort of like the Tsuburaya vs. Chaiyo struggle. Sci-Fi Japan...

Upcoming BCI Ultraman DVD is pretty suspicious . . .

Since BCI couldn't release any more Ultra-stuff, they are doing the alternative, by releasing some neat tokusatsu shows not seen in the US until now! These are from the Japanese company Senkosha (now Senko Planning), produced in the early 70s, and yes, these are *legit* releases from BCI! Out...

Upcoming BCI Ultraman DVD is pretty suspicious . . .

Unfortunately, the Hawaiian version of Ultra Seven is lost. As I understand it, only two episodes actually remain. One of the Ultra Seven DVD releases in Japan has the Hawaiian OP credit sequences (different versions of them!). The Turner version of Ultra Seven was actually dubbed by Cinar in...

Upcoming BCI Ultraman DVD is pretty suspicious . . .

The Japanese Region 2 discs are of waaaay superior quality, trust me. Tsuburaya spent a lot of time digitally erasing scratches, speckles and whatnot. The discs look beautiful. Whatever Tsuburaya has could even be suited to a Blu-Ray release. For the BCI discs, Chaiyo provided them with...

Upcoming BCI Ultraman DVD is pretty suspicious . . .

If they do, I really hope they release a box set edition with art by Alex Ross! (Ross really did do box art for special edition DVD sets of Ultra Q, Ultraman, Ultra Seven and Return of Ultraman in Japan.) I'm sure we'll get decent releases in the future. August Ragone has said that there are...

Upcoming BCI Ultraman DVD is pretty suspicious . . .

It's been a few weeks ago, but just in case nobody has heard about it, I thought I'd pass along the great news: Bangkok's Independent Newspaper More news items: Tsuburaya wins "Ultraman" battle - Asia entertainment news from Variety - varietyasiaonline.com AFP: Top court rules Ultraman...

Upcoming BCI Ultraman DVD is pretty suspicious . . .

8th Man is based on 8-Man (1963), created by Kazumasa Hirai and Jiro Kuwata (my favorite manga artist), and was produced by TCJ and Eiken. He is, in fact, Japan's earliest cyborg superhero, many years before Kamen Rider! I'm not sure myself about who owns the rights to the US version of the...

Upcoming BCI Ultraman DVD is pretty suspicious . . .

Ah, it's these kinds of posts that brighten my day. :) Before I do a list of the Ultra Series, let me say that Ultraman Tiga is indeed a great series! It is the first of the new-generation shows that have set the pace for the newer ones. Also, Tiga is not the only legit release; Image...

Upcoming BCI Ultraman DVD is pretty suspicious . . .

Sorry to say this, and I respect your opinion, but as a fan of the shows, I personally think that's rather closed-minded. What's wrong with the other shows? I love the first show also, but that doesn't mean I have to shut all the others out. There's more to Ultraman and other tokusatsu than...

Upcoming BCI Ultraman DVD is pretty suspicious . . .

That's what I'm hoping happens. Chaiyo's taking BCI for a ride, so I hope that Tsuburaya intervenes soon, and that BCI hasn't made those discs yet. Because this can be damaging to BCI, especially with all the other cool things they're planning. (Everything else they have is legit but the...

Upcoming BCI Ultraman DVD is pretty suspicious . . .

OK, to clarify what H!O was writing about, the center of the case here is a forged document with a fake hanko (Japanese signature stamp) by the late Noboru Tsuburaya. It was because of the hanko that the Japanese and Thai courts thought the document was legal and binding (despite the forged...

This is the same deal with tokusatsu fans, that is, if the official product is worth buying. Tokusatsu fans aren't stupid. They've seen screenshots of the R2 Ultraman DVDs (some of them even HAVE the DVDs themselves).

Upcoming BCI Ultraman DVD is pretty suspicious . . .

And don't forget the Thai (English-language) media. They have heresay about this whole mess, too. (Including the whole lie Chaiyo made about Tsuburaya having "financial difficulties" in one of the articles after the last court trial.) Japanese press have told a whole different side of the story...

You misread the info, Gord. The information I posted is from Henshin! Online (henshinonline.com), they have contacts with Tsuburaya.

Gord, I'll look into it. I've contacted H!O. If I get any info, I'll send it to you the moment I do. Thanks for your patience. :emoji_thumbsup:

Upcoming BCI Ultraman DVD is pretty suspicious . . .

Tsuburaya, of course! Chaiyo only worked with Tsuburaya on two films in 1974, and that was it. They had absolutely nothing to do with the creation of Ultraman (even though he tried to come up with a lie about that in the legal battle). Chaiyo's founder, Sompote Saengdeungchai was a film...

Upcoming BCI Ultraman DVD is pretty suspicious . . .

Mark, That's very true. This will probably give Tsuburaya the leverage it needs. As I understand it, Brad Warner in TPC's LA office has been gathering info, so the next step will be to see what the Tokyo office does. If TPC wins against Chaiyo, it remains to be seen whether they and BCI...

Upcoming BCI Ultraman DVD is pretty suspicious . . .

OK, now this I can discuss. This is true. The copyright to the Ultraman characters and shows have always been recognized as being that of Tsuburaya. Meanwhile, Pro-Link Co., Ltd., Tsuburaya's official Thai representative (who has the rights in Thailand to the shows from Ultraman Tiga on)...

Upcoming BCI Ultraman DVD is pretty suspicious . . .

Gord, with all due respect, I'm going to be very firm on this. This was all done behind Tsuburaya's back. And right now, while Tsuburaya is gathering info on this situation (they're being extremely careful with how to handle legal situations), they are very tight-lipped about this. John Pannozzi...

Upcoming BCI Ultraman DVD is pretty suspicious . . .

Gord, please understand. Tsuburaya Productions says that they would never tell anyone that they don't have the home video rights for the US. Additionally, it makes no sense to take one side without listening to the other, so until TPC says something, you're only listening to one side of the...

Upcoming BCI Ultraman DVD is pretty suspicious . . .

Then they're not doing a good job at all. Right now, you're only looking at one company's side of the story, instead of doing any extensive research. Tsuburaya has an LA office, for crying out loud! Bradley Warner is in charge of Tsuburaya's international division, and he is gathering...

Upcoming BCI Ultraman DVD is pretty suspicious . . .

Gord, all sources close to Tsuburaya Productions say that they have neither been contacted by BCI, nor have they licensed the show to anyone. BCI has contacted a third party source connected with Chaiyo (which is determined to damage Tsuburaya's overseas business, and ultimately, the company...
