Agree that it's lovely to see more Ozu come to U.S. Blu-ray, though I'm curious as to what the transfers on these might look like given that it doesn't sound like there's been any real restoration work done. The Good Morning Blu was based on a digital restoration as the film was badly in need of...
If WB isn't going to release the restoration on disc - and given that they've already released the film twice on Blu-ray I probably wouldn't blame them - I'd love to see them license it to someone like Criterion. This film - my favorite - has inexplicably never gotten the special edition it...
Any word on whether the Rio Bravo or East of Eden restorations will be available on standard Blu-ray? Possibly at a later date? I noticed the 4K discs don't come packaged with a blu as well.
Also interesting is the absence of The Jazz Singer in the comedies/musicals box. I realize it's not quite as important to the studio's legacy as Elf, but seems like it might have warranted some consideration, no?
I have a lot of affection for Everybody Wants Some!!, which is a very good movie in its own right and really suffered from the whole "spiritual sequel to Dazed" label that got affixed to it early in its making. It's not Dazed (which is an all-time classic, IMO, and one of the two or three best...
For those interested, heads-up that this weekend's D23 Expo has a panel/presentation Saturday titled "Magic in the Air: 30 Years of the Muppet Christmas Carol." I'd bet good money we'll get an announcement about the release of the restored version, likely on Disney+ and maybe physical (latter...
Going to push back on this somewhat. Depends on what you mean by "lost it." If you mean "directed a string of bad films," then it's hard to assert this since he's only directed one movie in the last 13 years (Blackhat, which most would label a miss, though it has its defenders).
His early...
Absolutely great movie. My favorite Soderbergh, and neck-and-neck with Jackie Brown for best Elmore Leonard adaptation. Clooney and Lopez are both phenomenal and demonstrate an old-school movie star chemistry we just don’t see any more. Murderer’s row supporting cast. One of the most underrated...
Same cut, but it was altered visually for the 2017 release (changes to color timing, etc.).

Apropos of nothing, I remember it taking forever for this movie to reach standard def DVD and being absolutely elated when it did. 16 years later, here we are with a Criterion 4K and Blu-ray version, and I'm only mildly excited for them. Life moves pretty fast.
Oooooof this sounds badass. Don't think I can justify upgrading the Blu-ray since Universal's release is strong and I'm not UHD-ready yet, but this could be one I grab in 4K in anticipation of the eventual upgrade.
Sounds like I'm in the same boat as a lot of folks - have this one on DVD but never upgraded, so am incredibly excited about this given that I also watch this every Thanksgiving.
I was hoping the restored version would be available at least on Disney+ this year, but it's pretty clear at this point that that's not happening, so I'm assuming we'll get the new version next year for the 30th. Hopefully in physical format as well!
It's a tremendous film, and frankly we should be lucky that someone with Lowery's sensibilities is still getting films released theatrically on a wide scale. I grabbed the Blu-ray and can't wait to watch the movie again.
It introduced some potentially interesting ideas and followed through on exactly none of them. It billed itself as a “true” sequel to the original when in fact it was just another crappy sequel with heaping doses of fan service.
I don’t think H20 is worth much of a damn as a movie, but it continues (and resolves) the Michael-Laurie storyline in a far more satisfying way than H2018. Also has a pretty low body count, keeping it more in scope with the original movie.
By this rationale, Halloween: H20 should technically have been called Halloween III since it it was a direct sequel to Halloween II, which would make it the second Halloween III in the franchise.
Also Halloween 2018 absolutely sucked.
Depends. There's a LOT to chew on with this one, but there's also a ton of symbolism that some have found inscrutable. And it's slow. But it's drop-dead gorgeous, and I personally thought the narrative itself was fairly clear even if some of the elements didn't quite add up. I don't buy many...
Absolutely tremendous film, and one I'm very much looking forward to revisiting. I like to think it's the kind of bold Arthurian epic Stanley Kubrick would have made.
I mean…you don’t HAVE to buy them. I probably won’t as I don’t see myself being 4K-ready any time soon and all the titles mentioned are on very nice Blu-rays.
I’ll be the first to admit to being dead wrong on this - always thought Criterion would eventually phase out physical media and focus on their streaming offerings rather than commit to a new (and niche) format. They still might ultimately end up there but kudos to them for continuing to try to...
