    A Modest Subwoofer

The Audioshop in Ottawa (audioshop.on.ca/energy.htm) has an excellent deal on the Energy S8.2 subwoofer. It is usually CD$399.99 and is now marked down to CD$249.99. This subwoofer is excellent for music and very good for home theater. Please note that The Audioshop will only ship Energy...

SVS PB12-Plus2 vs. SVS PC Ultra

If you can afford it, and if music performance and clean output are your primary goals, I would recommend an SVS PB12-Ultra/2 with all ports open. For music, bass output below 22Hz is not an important factor.

    PC-Ultra w/PEQ & Autosound 2000 #101setup, use same for Hi-Res analog audio?

Since I am not familiar with your specific gear, I can't answer for sure, but I think the answer is "yes". Why not try it and see? Another alternative would be to use the same 80Hz crossover point for all of your speakers all of the time.

    PC-Ultra w/PEQ & Autosound 2000 #101setup, use same for Hi-Res analog audio?

Your room response depends on three things: 1. The acoustics of your room. 2. The locations of all of your speakers. 3. The location(s) of your listening position(s). If these three things stay the same and if you have made the same settings for bass management, speaker size and speaker...

SVS PB12-ISD or HSU STF-3 for music?

Based on my own experience, I prefer the sound of my SVS PB10 on music to that of even my SVS PC-Plus. Will the PB10 play as loud as the PC-Plus? Certainly not. But played within its limits, I find the sound of the PB10 to be superior on music. Speaking for myself, I would buy a PC-ISD...

SVS PB12-ISD or HSU STF-3 for music?

My recommendation for 95% music would be a subwoofer that didn't exist at the time of the SVS PB12-ISD vs. Hsu STF-2 faceoff: the SVS PB10-ISD. The driver in the PB10 was based on lessons learned in the design of the 12" Ultra driver. It offers excellent transient response and clean output.

SVS PB12-Plus2 vs. SVS PC Ultra

Here's my suggestion: If your primary use is music, get the PC-Ultra. It is the one to get for better transient response and cleaner output. If your primary use is home theater, get the PB12-Plus/2. It is the one to get for higher maximum output. In my opinion, these are not "night and...

Any down-side to running a dual sub setup?

You may want to consider making your purchase in stages. Start with a single PB10, a sound level meter and a setup disk. That way you can experiment with subwoofer placement, crossover frequency and phase adjustment without the added complexity of a second subwoofer. You can also determine if...

Any down-side to running a dual sub setup?

I have read your review of the SVS PB10 versus other subwoofers. It would seem that your experience with the PB10 on music without your 25Hz high-pass filter has more to do with the peak in your room response at 26Hz than it does with the musical nature of the PB10 itself. Unless John Pine has a...

    Internet-only vs. retail speakers

The previously shown frequency response curves were the ones published by Ascend Acoustics for the CMT-340c. I had in mind the ones they published for the CMT-340m. Since I am new to this particular forum, I can't insert a link to this page. Perhaps someone else would be kind enough to do so...

best bookshelf speakers for music/ht for around 400-500 bucks!

In this price range, I would recommend the Swan 2.1 speakers in rosewood. They are available for $449 per pair from theaudioinsider.com.

    Internet-only vs. retail speakers

From personal experience, I know that Ascend Acoustics make some fine speakers for the money. However, I can't recommend mixing the CMT-340 and CBM-170 speakers in the same home theater system. According to Ascend Acoustics' own specifications and frequency response measurements, the CMT-340...
