Whatever Happened to Universal's Screen Legends/Glamour Collection sets???

Heh. You just missed TCM's showing of Shanghai Express last week. I've been time-shifting the Asian Images in Film series [Tuesdays and Thursdays this month] just to get all the rare Anna May Wong releases. Very little of her work is available commercially and most of it is of lesser quality...

Some Classic TV floats down the stream..

Requires Adobe Crash Player. No thanks. I used to have have hourly crashes from Flash ads scripted by incompetent programmers. Since I disabled Macromedia plugins, I haven't had a single problem. Never going back.

BELLS OF ST. MARY'S and the @&!# annoying bar

I noticed the bar during TCM's recent holiday telecast of Bells of St. Mary's. I don't recall the archival source, but it seemed like a decent - not perfect - transfer.

How long do tapes and DVDs last? Seems like my VHS collection is going to hell...

I spent time looking for the best method of archiving home video data, in terms of longevity and cost. The information I've gathered from various sources like the one Bryan^H quoted tends to agree on major points. Error correction is a significant factor for digital media. Even new DVDs...

What Will it Take to Unwrap a DVD?

Do you think that if I have "SECURITY DEVICE ENCLOSED" chiseled on my gravestone, it will deter grave robbers?

What Will it Take to Unwrap a DVD?

I'd pay $1 extra - no make that $1.50 - for sticker-free DVDs. I absolutely hate those infernal tags. Even when you exercise the patience of a diamond cutter gently urging them off, you're left with gummy residue on the plastic. Maybe when online shopping eventually replaces the shoplifting...

Colorization: a possible solution to unreleased B/W shows?

Not really... LOL sadly. Turning down the color level doesn't restore the depth of tone present in the original B&W. The picture looks flat and detail in the shadows is lost. You can't reverse engineer a transfer with digital settings.

    The Man From UNCLE??

Finally got a shipping notice: Shipped 12-11-2007 via USPS Bound Printed Matter. I guess that's like Media Mail, so it may arrive between Christmas and New Years. 'Bout time.

    The Man From UNCLE??

The only positive scenario I can think of is that they may have encountered a lot of defective product due to the flimsy packaging and they're sparing the early orderers disappointment by waiting until the next production run. Still, not having it by the end of the year would be a major...

    The Man From UNCLE??

Check your order status again. Like you, I ordered on 10/1 and went from "In the warehouse to ship" to "Out of Stock". Today it's back to "In the warehouse to ship". Keeping my fingers crossed...

    The Man From UNCLE??

I'd be interested in knowing the order date for anyone who actually does receive the set. Assuming "Out of Stock" isn't just code for "Delayed Release".

    The Man From UNCLE??

If you never really wanted it, why did you order it to begin with?

    The Man From UNCLE??

Yeah, I noticed that too. My order was placed on 10/1 [first day] and the original ship date was 11/27. Hope we don't get into the same situation as Get Smart did last year with sold-out first runs and delayed shipments.

Possible Release of Disney's "Song of the South"?

That big green guy had better watch his "Ho Ho Ho". You heard what happened to Santa Clause down under? jk I remember seeing "Song of the South" in the theater and on the Walt Disney Presents show as a youngster. I recognized the stereotypes even then and knew they were a reflection of...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ The Mickey Rooney & Judy Garland Collection

Just added it to my DD wishlist. Makes me hope they'll release an Andy Hardy collection, Maisie, and other "B" series of the 30s some day.

DVD Review HTF DVD Review: Robinson Crusoe on Mars

Not a B-Movie in the sense of fake-looking props, two-dimensional sets and mediocre acting. It's immersive and thought-provoking, besides being very entertaining. I'm surprised more scifi fans apparently aren't familiar with the title. It's in my top ten list for the genre. I consider it on a...

    Ads before the film?

The only cinema I attend any more is the Stanford classic film theater. The only prefilm entertainment I am treated to is a 15-minute recital on their fully restored Wurlitzer, sometimes accompanied by a vocalist from one of the nearby clubs. David Packard (of HP fame) has done a wonderful job...

    "The Little Match Girl" (1937)

Most listings indicate Format: Animated, Closed-captioned, Color, NTSC. Run time for the original was 8m, which fits with the DVD's total time of 60m [6 features]. I assume the drawing of woman and child in the Christmas tree ornament was taken from the title story. If you're familiar with the...

TV Shows You've Bought but Won't Complete

Yeah. I replied early on that I wouldn't buy Sliders S3 because of the price increase and decline in storytelling. For some reason I changed my mind during the last DDD sale. A copy of S3 is sitting on the shelf unopened. I just know there are Kromaggs lurking inside. Another...

How many of you are finished collecting ALL the TV show DVDs you plan on owning?

The only series I'm still waiting for is Man from U.N.C.L.E., but I may be tempted by other releases as they become available. When HD drives DVD off the market, that will mark the real end for me. I don't feel the need to upgrade my collection. I have little interest in any movies or TV of...

Would you buy a set for only one season?

There's one show I remember from childhood for which I'd love to purchase a single season [1961/S4], if it were available. Actually, it's a single episode from that series that I somehow became obsessed with because of its atmosphere and solo performance by Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. The show is 77...

    Movies Not Available on DVD

On a visit to Australia earlier this year I spent some time browsing the video shops and rental stores. I was surprised by the number of NTSC DVDs available [dual-format players/TVs are common] and the number of multiregion and region-free releases. These were actual studio releases, not boots...

Criterion to release Huston's 'Under the Volcano' & 'Robinson Crusoe on Mars' 2007

Do you remember the sausage plants? :D The LD has some great art galleries with detailed drawings of all the props. I hope Criterion includes all the extras with the DVD release. RCOM is the best alternate telling of a classic ever!

Why would the studios release... (re:tv shows)

Why are some series one and done when it comes to a DVD release? Probably for the same reason they fail to get renewed during original broadcast. They aren't making enough money to justify continued investment. Could some kind of coproduction scheme be worked out, as you suggest, in order to...

For as prolific an actress as she was in the 30s-40s, it's surprising that so few of Ann Sothern's starring vehicles have been released on DVD. Actually, considering the "B" nature of most of her films, maybe it's not so surprising. But I've always had a soft spot for Ms Sothern and would like...

Holiday Affair, starring Robert Mitchum and Janet Leigh is one I recently watched on Turner Classic Movies. I keep wondering every year whether this 1949 Christmas classic will ever make it to DVD. :frowning:
