"There are two sides to this story just like most and those that are very set in their ways about each. " Yes, there's the scientific side and the audiophile side. If speakers had to break-in, it would be measureable. Those measurements would be repeatable. Anyone care to post some repeatable...
I didn't use my Dayton sub for music before the BFD. Now, it's useable. I still have upgraditus but at least I'm getting most of the lower octave while I wait on the finances. David
"Because it's a cheap POS that doesn't go very deep without getting boomy and resonating/buzzing so I have to adjust the gain very carefully for different kinds of output. Slow and muddy too. " Are you referring to the sub or the BFD? You responded to the post about the BFD so I'll assume...
"Oh man, I know about that thing! But I'm a musician, so I've seen it in mags, online, etc. I didn't know you guys were using it for your subs, may I ask why?" Because it's the best low cost sub equalizer on the market. http://www.snapbug.ws/bfd.htm David
" Magnepan has 1sseveral other inexpensive models (MMG-Ws, MC1s) that actually have greater WAF than most boxes do." My wife just voted you off the island. As much as I appreciate Maggies, I stood no chance of having them in her livingroom. :frowning: David
MMG's and 340's are so different that getting other people's opinions is not going to help much. They are both very good but again they are just too different in all aspects to even be compared. Some points to consider besides sound. The 340's are versatile. They are efficient 8ohm speakers...
I consider the BFD a requirement with all non-EQ'ed subs. The BFD is not cheaply made. It's an inexpensive unit that does things that usually cost a lot more. You have to expect some compromises. That dosen't equate to cheap. David
Is it worth to upgrade? Yes. Most definitely. should I just stick with this Athena 8" sub until I save up some more $$$ to get the Velodyne, HSU or even SVS subs maybe in the next few years? It might be worth waiting if were a matter of months but a few years is way too long to wait...
Jim, C'mon over to the Ascend Forum. Good people (some who also post here) with a lot of experience. We always love to talk speakers. :emoji_thumbsup: http://forum.ascendacoustics.com/ David
I'm certain that the Salk's are a fine speaker but I do take issue with several of the things on his website. What he lists as "minefields" are really strengths if you have some basic knowledge and the ability to apply it. Every speaker has tradeoffs and the Salk's are no different in that...
"I also listened to the Studio 40s and they were really nice but were a little more that I wanted to spend." "Does anyone have recomendations on other speakers that sound similar to the Paradigms?" From my experience, if you like the sound of the Studio 40, you will like the sound of the...
"Enter the even more wonderful world of room acoustics. Bass treatment is always helpful, and is a more thorough solution when used in conjunction with EQ like a BFD, because EQ alone cannot fix certain frequency response problems, nor time domeain problems." Chris, you married? :D My HT is...
13 feet is a long way for the Dayton. Mine is less than half that and it does make a very noticeable difference. I originally had it 10 feet from the listening position (corner loaded). David
"pardon my ignorance, but what is a BFD?" http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshow...number=248-656 It's a low cost way to EQ a sub to gain a lot in signal quality (SQ). David
"I have that sub. For it size and price it works well." Same here. My HT is 23x13 with a large opening to the dining room. Placement is key. My sub works very well in one spot. I've tested it in multiple locations and none of them were acceptable. I've also added a BFD and it made a world of...
I wouldn't expect the Ref 2's and the Swan's to have a lot in common. I haven't heard either but from what's been posted on the various forums, I would expect them to sound quite different. David
How did you A/B the Bose and the other speakers? There are "tricks of the trade" that salesman use to make one speaker sound better than another. All the speakers you auditioned are much more accurate than B*se. The base module is not a subwoofer. The satellites are so feeble, they don't...
You can't believe ecost on the number left. That number can jump up and down like a yo-yo. I haven't tracked anything recently so I don't know if that's the case currently but it certainly was the case on items I've tracked in the past. David
The warranty from Parts Express is excellent. They stand behind their product. I have the Dayton and would recommend it at this price point. I recently added the $100. BFD and I have a +/- 2db from 30-100 hz. For a total of just over $200., I have a heck of a sub. David
"and XLR to RCA cables as well for the BFD. " A couple bucks for the adapters. "Don't forget to add the cost of a new microphone to that BFD, and some measuring software, as well as a PC to run it." A RS SPL meter and a spreadsheet will suffice. Perfect? No, but definitely...
"But when I used my 11 filters shown in the thread here: http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htf...ighlight=Warner, it looks so much better." How much time did this take? I've been experimenting for weeks now and I'm still @ two filters. Nice job. David
"The only thing I don't like and they all do it is always have the hook and bait out that some new thing is on the horizon. Well every company does that but internet companies are really noted for doing this and are always late at supply or target date. I'd almost rather go back to not knowing...
