Netflix's House of Cards Season 1

I love it when he does not even say anything, but rather just gives a sidelong look to the audience, as if we are in on a private joke with him.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)

Smaug is the MacGuffin that drives the story in the first half, but he's not seen until about half to two-thirds of the way through. He parleys with Bilbo for a few minutes, flies out and gets shot. It's kind of funny actually how quickly the MacGuffin is dealt with.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)

Also, in the books, the Elves are fighting at Lothlorien and other places in battles that are not narrated nor shown on screen. I believe Peter Jackson mentioned in the commentary or somewhere about how this was a way to portray that the Elves, though leaving, did do some fighting.

    *** Official CLOVERFIELD Discussion Thread

I'm pretty sure that's the point. Rocky, the movie, told a great story without worrying about convention or what people may expect. I'm sure a lot of people expected him to win, and were disappointed when he lost. But the movie transcended expectations. That's the problem with too much...

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)

Outside of Tolkien fans, who would want to watch a 3.5 hour epic rendition of the Narn in theatres? LotR movie fans will probably see it once and hate it. It is so depressing and sad compared to LotR, which is so full of hope and optimism. I would see it though, but I definitely fall into the...

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)

I loved the first movie, loved the second one even more, and am expecting to be pleased with the third one. The trailer looks great, I was underwhelmed at first with DMC's trailer but it grew on me. This one takes the teaser that was the end of DMC and really opens it up.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)

There is now about two months left till release, and still no trailer. Should we be worried?

Children of Men - Discussion thread

I know what you mean. Sitting in awe in the theatre as I watched that scene, part of me was drawn into the movie but another part realized how profound and amazing this was... this was historic cinema.

Wait a second... there were gorillas in the film? :)

    Letters From Iwo Jima

I speculate that this may just be because the dialogue is in another language and the film itself focuses on a different culture. That in itself makes it seem more exotic, arthouse, if you will. In any case, I thought Flags was excellent and I look forward to seeing the other point of view...

    All-Male or All-Female movies?

I'm pretty sure there were female penguins in the movie. :)

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)

I wonder if the "two movies" comment means something along the lines of the LotR extended editions - one movie released to theatres that is a direct adaptation, while another that is longer with all the background material for the DVD.

"The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian"

Brandon & Chris: Jadis was referred to by name exactly once in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe - When the Pevensies read Maugrim's letter left at Mr. Tumnus' house, he refers to her as "Jadis, Queen of Narnia, etc."

    Great trailers and Lousy Trailers

After watching Seven Samurai on DVD, I watched the trailer. That was a good choice. The trailer begins, in Japanese, "There were seven... but only three remain!" Talk about giving away the ending.

    Are There "Positive" Political Films?

Of course, the counterpart to this is the Simpsons' "The Amendment Song" that shows the government in a less than ideal light. ;)

    Great trailers and Lousy Trailers

X2. I was in the theater for one of the LotR movies when it came on with the chess scene from the end of the first movie. Then the rumblings of Holst's "Mars" begin. Great trailer.

    Elizabethtown

I saw it today and really liked it. Instead of being something really detailed, it was more like an impressionist painting, a snapshot in the day of the life of middle America. It came across as very real to me.

    "WOW!" Moments in the Movies

Well, I've read the entire thread. Saw a few mentions of The Godfather, but the one moment I think of is the opening scene. "I believe in America..." I was too young to see it in the theater, but the first time I saw it on DVD I got shivers hearing that.

    The Village (2004)

First post. Hooray. The twist does not make the movie, in my opinion. The strength of the movie is the character studies, the competing philosophies. Go watch it with an open mind, ready to think about things rather than picking out the twist.
