Very nice news. Sawdust and Tinsel may be one of my least favorite of Bergman's films, but I'll still be buying it. Seeing it again may give me a new appreciation, as well. Gotta love how Criterion already call him a 'late master' I've never had a chance to see Drunken Angel, but I've really...
Great review, Matt. I've never seen a Teshigahara film before, but I pre-ordered this set anyway, got a shipping notice earlier today. I've been excited to see all three, but your comments ensured that I'll probably put them in as soon as they arrive.
Rest in Peace, Sven. I honestly think he was the best cinematographer to work in film. Even if it was just for his work with Bergman (who is my personal favorite), but also look at how amazing Tarkovsky's Offret is, in addition to Another Woman, Crimes and Misdemeanors, The Unbearable...
Signs of Life and Land of Silence and Darkness are both available on DVD from New Yorker, and Steiner is part of a triple feature with How Much Wood Would a Woodchuck Chuck and La Soufriere (amazing film), on DVD from them as well. Where the Green Ants Dream is available from a company called...
Thanks Jeff! I'd been waiting a while for the October announcements. I looked over the titles and thought it was a lackluster month. I didn't realize Clean, Shaven was the debut from the director of Keane, which was an amazing film, and now I can't wait to get ahold of it. And, the same goes for...
Yup, just a repackaging. Where Eagles Dare was part of Warner's 5-movie set, Battlefront Europe, and like they did with North by Northwest in the Hitchcock set, they repackaged the film into an amary case to keep it uniform with the other titles. Otherwise, aside from the superiority of the...
Awesome news. I read about the film in the book, Making Pictures: A Century of European Cinematography and have wanted to see it ever since. But, the current DVD doesn't have the color tinting, so I've been trying to avoid it. I'm glad I have a chance to see it now, with the tinting intact.
Paul, I did the same thing, and I was also wondering why the other two Noirs haven't shipped yet. But, today I got an email from DDD:
"It has come to our attention that the title “Boomerang” is being discontinued by the manufacturer. At this time we are requesting that you pick a replacement...
No need for the suit, Zachary :) I'd recommend Harlan County. It's a very good documentary on a coal miners' strike in the early 70's, in Kentucky. The highlight of the film is the great soundtrack, which is made up of songs that the miners wrote while they were on strike, like protest...
I had the film on tonight and made sure to check, and the version that Discovery is airing DOES include the Letterman footage. It's re-airing tomorrow night if any of you completists missed it. :)
I don't know about life-changing films...I've never had a film change my life, per se, but I do know of a few films that have completely changed the way that I look at cinema in general. When I was on the verge of teenage-dom, my Aunt rented a bunch of movies, among which were SE7EN and A...
Some more random thoughts... Finally watched my copy of Le Samourai that I bought on release. What a fantastic film, I couldn't be happier on this blind buy. I've loved the previous Melvilles that Criterion has released, so it's not surprising. I just love the tone and the atmosphere of the...
Joe, I think you're in for a treat. I remember almost a year ago, a guy I used to know recommended Aguirre as my first Herzog. I was floored by the film and haven't looked back since, as my Herzog DVD sets and my copy of Herzog on Herzog can attest to. :) I only hope that you can get as much out...
I'm not going to have the motivation to say much about everything I see, but I've found some stuff worth discussing. First off, I certainly hope you don't mind, Joe, but I took your recommendation of Lured for myself. I recently saw my first-ever Sirk, Written on the Wind, and enjoyed it, so...
There's still plenty I haven't seen yet, though Munich and Brokeback Mountain are finally here tomorrow, so I know I'll probably see those soon. My Top 10 of 2005 1. Grizzly Man 2. Broken Flowers 3. King Kong 4. Cinderella Man 5. Walk the Line 6. Serenity 7. Sin City 8. Batman Begins...
Marco, I'm a Netflix member and I just checked for you. This film is actually one of the films you can add to your "saved" section, which is reserved for films that haven't been released or even formally announced yet. In fact, if I add it to my Saved list, it says "The release date is...
I've wanted to do this for a while, but I think I arrived here too late to participate. I'm only 21 right now, so most of mine will probably be first viewings. But, I have promised myself that I won't deprive myself of re-watching some of my favorite films whenever the mood strikes me. Also...

Craig, the DVD's runtime is 1:44:02, whereas IMDb lists the runtime as 103 minutes. That's only a one minute gap, plus the Letterman clip. I'll watch it within the next couple of days and see if I remember anything missing. Also, my copy (US retail version) has only a Dolby 2.0 track, no other...
I remember the Letterman footage was in the theatrical cut. I've recently read a book on Treadwell, Grizzly Maze, so I wasn't sure if I'd just read about it there or if it was actually in the film. But then I read the blurb TonyD posted and that jarred my memory.
This is very interesting. I loved it when I saw it at the theater, so I'm eager to pick up the disc next week, though I can't promise I'll be able to spot anything new or different. One thing that I remember made a ton of people on IMDB mad... towards the end of the film, Herzog listens to the...
Steve, Widescreen Unrated copy here, purchased from Circuit City on day one. Disc is dual-layered, total size is 7.79 GB. Don't know what you want specifically in regards to the VOB files. I've got 6 VOB files here that are VTS_01_1, VTS_01_2, etc. The first 5 files are 0.99 GB, last one is...
I've heard nothing but good things about this one, surprisingly. I'm not big on modern comedies, but your excellent review seals the deal. Happy to see there are some good extras on board as well. Thanks again for the great review, Steve. :emoji_thumbsup:
I've picked up the previous 2 waves of noir from Fox, so this just heightens my anticipation. In regards to the "nametag" dialogue, I haven't seen this film yet, but sometimes this kind of dialogue can come in handy. We all know how twisty and confusing some of the deeper film noirs can get...
Awesome news! Thanks Gregory. I've only seen Streetcar and the Rose Tattoo, but I've always really liked Tennessee Williams' style and how it's adapted for the screen. Definitely another buy for me, from Warners.
Awesome, finally a decent edition of Network! Dog Day Afternoon ain't no slouch either. Definitely another must-buy Warner set for me. :emoji_thumbsup:
I've never seen any of Burns' stuff, but I've always been interested. I think I'm going to check a few of his works out, now that you've reminded me, Mr. Harris. Then, we'll have to see about this nice-looking set. :emoji_thumbsup:
A big stack of them, hidden like they were Easter Eggs, at Best Buy in N. Attleboro, MA today. All marked at $98.xx too. But I held one! And it was nice!
