BIG PROBLEM WITH MY DUNLAVY'S!!! Need advice!

Jesse, have you been driving these speakers hard or overly loud? Had you noticed any distortion when playing the speakers prior to the driver going bye bye? Regardless, sometimes parts just fail, no fault of wattage or anything else. You should not stress about it. Many people replace drivers...

JBL S38 II sounds hollow when I knock on it...

I think we basically agree, but that's a good point. That's why people talk about "tuning a cabinet" with ports etc. much like tuning a piano. I think my point was the same as yours. What are apparently simple parts combine in not so simple ways. Some designers take months or years to achive the...

JBL S38 II sounds hollow when I knock on it...

The long and short of it though is that loudspeakers really are not that complicated. You've got your drivers, your crossover and your cabinet. These components are, if done correctly, designed to work as a unit. One of those, "the whole is more than its parts" things. If you like the way your...

    Quick question about port plugging

Just make sure you can get the sock out. I've heard weird stories, probably urban legends, about people ending up in the emergency room with things in their port that they cannot remove themselves. :D

Would this even be an upgrade?

I agree with Eric on the ribbon tweeters. The mid bass drivers Jim uses are as good as I've heard also. The front of mine are curly redwood and the rest of the cabinets are redwood burl. You can see them here on Jim's website. http://www.salksound.com/gallery-votm-0404.html

Would this even be an upgrade?

Brian has a good point as well. The Salks aren't cheap. But you're spending money on quality components and furniture grade wood work instead of dealer and manufacturer markup. I feel that I now have a pair of speakers that I'll be happy with for a long long time, maybe forever.

Would this even be an upgrade?

I recommend you look over the website in the link above. Read Jim's views on speaker parts, i.e. driver quality, crossovers, cabinets etc. Then just look at the quality of his cabinet work. Look here too. http://photobucket.com/albums/y108/t...rrent=tfs2.jpg Then you can initiate a...

Would this even be an upgrade?

I second Eric:F. I have a pair of salk ht1s. They are phenominal to hear and look at. If you get these, the only upgrades you'll need are the front end equipment to do these speakers justice (depending on what you have now of course.)

eBay, drunkeness, and the audio upgrade bug

Unless she was ugly and he just wanted to get it over with and move on... Or the beer goggles wore off. Usually I just fall asleep, but I'm probably older... Just remember (this was a friend of mine's sage advise every Saturday night out before we went our separate ways at the clubs) "even fat...

Do new speakers need to be break in just like new cars?

My experience is that some speakers will change and break ini over a few days, but not weeks. Maybe he was just trying to put you off until its too late to bring back the speakers back at no cost to you. If it sounds bad now, it probably will not get better to the point of satisfying you.

    New Fluance bookshelves

I have a pair of the Fluance bookshelves that I bought on a whim for a bedroom setup. Not bad for a hundred bucks. I have a pair of speakers that cost ten times the price and they certainly don't sound 10x better. I also have a pair that costs 25x what the Fluance books cost. Not 25x better...

    Look what I'm getting tomorrow

John what brand are your bookshelves? They look nice as well. Are yours anchored to the stands at all? Mine are just sitting on top. The stands come with spikes for the top plate, but I could not bring myself to install them since I thought I'd scratch the hell out of the bottoms of the...

    Look what I'm getting tomorrow

John, I think the stands make them look bigger. But, I don't care how big they are really, they put out a big sound. They are at perfect ear level when I'm in my recliner with my eyes closed.:) I'm actually surprised more folks are not interested in the drivers, performance etc. I guess...

    Look what I'm getting tomorrow

So far these sound fantatic. These speakers have solved a number of problems that I had been blaming on my subwoofer and room. I had been having some issues with slightly muddy sounding bass, which I had assumed was sub placement and my room interacting. It was actually my old speakers playing...

    Look what I'm getting tomorrow

John, the Salks are not as efficient as other speakers I have, but I don't know the exact number. The 501 barely has enough power. To really get them to sing, I had to turn up the juice to about 3/4 of 100%. I'm going to start looking at the used amp market...Without the 20-39PC+, I'd be really...

Ken, the bose were in the running up until the end, but the salk's won by a hair. John Garcia: Thanks for pointing that out to me.:) They actually look better in person than the pictures could ever show. Amazing cabinet work on the part of JS. That really seems to be his specialty in my...

    Look what I'm getting tomorrow

Sure, I'll give my impressions once they're here and set up. It's funny, the cascade of upgrades this speaker upgrade is bound to cause. I'm currently using a modest receiver, Onkyo 501, which probably does not have enough clean power to do these speakers justice. But, the 501 does not have pre...

    Look what I'm getting tomorrow

By strident, I'm assuming you mean forward or bright? I would assume this would be dependent on the cross over design, the room, and other aspects of the implementation of the speaker. But, all's I can say at this point is, "we'll see".

    Look what I'm getting tomorrow

This is what the website says about the mid woofer. I think it is 6.5 inches. I did not care that much about size as the frequency response. I have a decent subwoofer 20-39PC+ for the lowest end anyway. Added later: The woofer is 18cm or about 7 inches. "W18EX A tweeter as detailed and...
