Anyone want to recommend a decent DVD recorder?

How annoying is this. I too was hoping to piggy-back on Ron's decision making process. I'm about to pull the trigger on a purchase to start recording the new seasons of BG, SG-A, SG-1, and Monk. Looking in the under $200 range, but staying away from the cheap $100 machines. Like the chase-play...

DTS Neo 6 vs. Dolby Pro Logic II (CONSOLIDATED THREAD)

As a newbie who just installed my surround speakers yesterday, I've found this thread very interesting. One of the first things I noticed upon listening to DD, DTS, or using any of the surround modes for TV was that all the "life" has been sucked out of my front speakers. This "life" being the...

Just picked up an NAD 773... a question

My player's remote (Panasonic A110) has an AUDIO button that switches between the available audio tracks. I can use this to swap between DD, DTS, and any other tracks that are on a disc while it is playing . My receiver (HK AVR230) detects the switch and resyncs to the new stream. I expect your...

    Simple: ~ $2000 for 5.1 speakers...Which ones?

Here's my $0.02. 1. Buy what you can listen to. Go to a store/shop and listen to the speakers with some well known music and/or movies - even better, take them home and listen to them in your room. Your ears and hearing will affect what speaker sounds good to you as much as anything. 2...

    Simple HK avr 230 question

I just bought an AVR230. Yes, the film is on VERY tight. When I removed mine, a bit of the ink from the lettering even came off - very evenly, but made me a bit worried. As far as I know, the only thing the film does is protect the plastic display from scratching. If the look doesn't bother you...

    AV Receiver inputs/outputs

You can plug pretty much whatever you want where ever you want - as long as you keep audio things in audio inputs and video things in video inputs. :) - Jasen.

Does digital cable produce digital sound?

This is normal. I suspect you have the line level outputs from the cable box connected to your receiver. Those line level cables are analog. You MIGHT have a digital out on your cable box; you'd have to look and/or ask your cable company. - Jasen.

    The Bass Archives

Nifty idea. Are the plots from microphones, line level inputs, or in the case of CDs, direct sampling of the digital file? I suspect I could get a pretty decent plot by using the LFE line out on my receiver into my computer and recording the signal. I don't know of a way to capture/rip DVD...

A HT without a Sub? Comments.

Point taken. I just picked up a pair of Paradigm ADP-170 surrounds. Should I swap them out for a sub (PDR-10) or do surrounds add more to the "theater" experience? Right now I feel I'm really missing out on all that surround sound more than tight deep bass. (Of course I want both and hope to...

    mail order vs local dealers?

I see many people on this site recommend various mail order web sites to buy equipment from. I've always thought that using a local dealer who you can pester with questions, see, touch, and try equipment before buying, and consult with problems after purchase is a better policy. Opinions...

A HT without a Sub? Comments.

But is all that extra bass accurate? I broke down and measured test tones with my Radio Shack SPL meter yesterday. To my surprise, I was getting good bass response (-4dB) down to about 30Hz, and then dropped to about -10 dB at 20Hz with my old pair of Paradigm 5se Mk IIs - which are rated +/-...

    going to audition some AVR's

Hmmm... I wouldn't audition receivers AT Circuit City. My local one doesn't have much of a listening room, and are you planning to ask the sales droids to drag various receivers in, hook them up, and let you listen? Good luck. You're better off taking CC up on their 30 day return policy...

    hk avr 230?

I picked up an AVR230 at CC last week and have been auditioning it pretty heavily the past week. I currently only have front speakers (Paradigm 5se Mark IIs) so I can't comment on the full range of features, but I can comment on a few things. 1. It is a reasonably competent unit. There may be...

    Square Footage Question.

My suggestion would to try both settings and see which you like the sound of better. There really are no firm "rules". If you like the way it sounds, that's the "right" way. I'm not familiar with that receiver, but from the description of your space I would not count the dining room. I...

    NAD or H/K

Thanks for the link. The T743 manual is not listed on the index page. I noticed in the 743 manual that there is a screen shot with "CROSSOVER FREQ" on it, but the text doesn't mention setting the crossover. :frowning: Good manuals are an indication of attention to detail and quality, IMHO. They...

    NAD or H/K

I just finished reading the HK AVR230 and NAD T763 manuals. (NAD still doesn't have manuals or any info about the T743 on their site. ) Here's some things I learned - anyone with info countering any of this please chime in. 1. The HKs manual is 52 pages long; the NAD 32. 2. The HK...

Direct vs Dipole surrounds on back wall?

I guess that is the rub. Do shops normally let a person load up on 3 or 4 different sets of speakers to take home, install in various configurations, and return the ones that don't work out? The last time I bought a receiver (`92) I picked up an HK from Circuit City and hauled it to the...

Direct vs Dipole surrounds on back wall?

My listening room is 17'L x 12.5'W x 9.33'H with the seating position (couch) ~3' from the back wall. Those three feet are a walkway and there's a couple doors in that wall so no speakers can go near ear level. There is a backside of a chimney sticking into the room in the middle of one wall. I...

some idiot knocked over my Paradigm!

From the picture posted, I agree, the damage looks pretty minor. But, I think the original poster's real concern is that the speaker toppled over and hit the wall pretty hard. Is there any internal damage likely that isn't immediately apparent? Like a cone basket cracked or some insulation...

    Ground Loop Problem?

I just dealt with this same problem this weekend. The 75->300->75 transformer worked well enough for me (and only $6.00 in parts:)). If that solves your hum problem but the quality degrades too much, there are fancier transformers available. Try a little Googling for "cable tv isolation...

    NAD or H/K

Quote: Please do a search of the forum before posting, this has been covered before. OK, I did a search. None of the HK vs NAD threads I found discussed the new NAD Txx3 models vs the HK AVRx30 models. Currently, NAD's site has pretty sparse info on the Txx3 models. So asking here...

    NAD or H/K

I have pretty much the same question, except at the lower end of the spectrum. I'm considering an HK AVR130 or 230 vs the NAD T743. Unfortunately, the NAD T743 lists for $700 which pricewise puts in on par with the AVR330 or AVR430 - depending on whether I go mail order (which I'd really rather...

Opinions on Conversation Held about HT

I'm not familiar with that particular receiver nor all the other components you mentioned, but I can offer a little general feedback. Sony is not noted for having very good receivers. H/K, Onkyo, Denon, Yamaha, NAD, etc. all make powerful clean receivers that are better performing than your...

Should I be scared of H/K?

While 5 years may be a bit short of a lifespan, it's within reason. Think of this as an opportunity to upgrade to one of HK's new x30 line (or try out some other manufacturer). The new models have 192kHz/24bit DACs, 7 channels of power, and component video. Quite an uprgrade from your older...

    NEW Harman/Kardon Receivers!

I just got done browsing HK's site with the new receivers. I see that they've gone to 192kHz/24bit DACs across the entire x30 line, and are using a couple of different flavors of Cirrus DSPs. Has anyone listened to these new receivers yet? Have any feedback? NAD recently posted a little...

    Luxman compares to what today?

I have a Luxman R-341 (35 W/pc driving Paradigm 5se Mk IIs). As I've browsed dealerships listening to other receivers over the years, I find NAD to be a close match to the Luxman. My Luxman has a "smoothness" that is hard to find. Many other receivers sound harsher, over-crisp, more...
