Oops - meant to say Samsung HD931. Following the threads over on AVS Forum it's interesting to see that the new Samsung 841 also has the black crush problem over DVI. Didn't they learn anything with the 931? Dave
No. When I first heard about the recall I called Toshiba and got the info then. But I haven't felt compelled to return it and I'll never use that Samsung HD960 again. Dave
I still have the 5960 and it's been great. Other than the Pirates problem I haven't seen a thing and I've watched a lot of discs (I have over 600). The picture is beautiful. Using the URC-200 universal remote takes care of the lousy remote problem (I concur with that one). Dave
I've seen the complaints about the plastic in the case, etc. But since I'm setting it up in one place and not moving it then I'm not worried about destroying it. I've had a Tosh 2109 for some years now and never had a problem with it. Every disadvantage I've seen is outweighed by the great...
DonnyD - There is a lot of discussion over at the AVS Forum: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...highlight=5960 I picked it up to replace my Samsung HD931, which has terrible PQ for me (bad black crush over DVI). I am using a HDMI-DVI cable to connect the Tosh to my Toshiba 51H83...
Over on the AVS Forum there's a thread about possible display issues when going from HDMI to DVI: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=385388 Anyone have any experience with this?
Check out the other threads here on the Samsung. I have one connected to my Toshiba 51H83 via DVI and the black crush problem really sucks. When other DVI-capable units come out this year I'll take another look at a new one and dump the Samsung if I can. Dave
I've switched from DVI to the component connection. In dark scenes the picture is much better with more detail and absence of tinting. And run without progressive scan at the player, letting the TV do the work. This provides the best picture. I'd have to say I'm disappointed with the 931. Dave
Tim-L - I just posted a reply on the older HD931 thread, talking about issues I'm having with my picture. There I said: "I have the HD931 connected to my Toshiba 51H83 via DVI. The problem is that dark scenes are abnormally dark, to the point of significant/complete loss of detail (I've...
To answer my own question. You can go to http://msn.espn.go.com/sitetools/s/contact/espntv.html and comment on thier presentation. This is their response: Thank you for your e-mail. We have shared your comments with the appropriate personnel for ESPN HD. Currently, ESPN HD is a simulcast...
I have the HD931 connected to my Toshiba 51H83 via DVI. The problem is that dark scenes are abnormally dark, to the point of significant/complete loss of detail (I've compared the same picture on my old 27" set). In addition, dark areas invariably have a red or green tint to them which I can't...
OK - I did a search on overscan and learned. I used my Video Essentials disk and it appears to be about 5% at the sides. What is "typical"? From what I read, 3-5% is about right. Like I said, the title lettering is right at the edges on my non-widescreen tv so this example is probably about as...
TV is set to 16:9. No zoom on the DVD player. The clipping is not large, just enough to cut the two end letters in half. On my 27" in letterbox mode, the outside letters are right at the display edges but are fully displayed. I'm not familiar with overscan so I'll do a search on it. Sounds...
Wasn't sure on which forum to post this - apologies up front if this isn't the right place. I bought the new Alien boxed set for play on my Toshiba 51HD83 rear projection set connected to a Samsung HD931 DVD player by DVI. Looking at the opening credits, I noticed that the sides of the...
Well, I was just handed the opportunity to get a new DVD player - my daughter moved out and we wanted to get her one. I gave her my relatively new Toshiba SD-3950 and got a Samsung HD931 to replace it. I connected it to my Toshiba 51H83 with a DVI cable. I have to say that looking at comparisons...
From what I've read here, I don't see any strong reason to upgrade from my Toshiba SD-3900 (actually, it's a 3950 bought at Best Buy - I don't see references to this model number on Toshiba's site). Dave
I have a new 51" Toshiba HDTV and I'm using an inexpensive Toshiba SD-3900 progressive scan DVD player. Question: Bells and whistles aside, would picture quality be noticably better with a more expensive player, e.g. the Samsung HD931? Or is the difference marginal? Thanks, Dave
I just got a new Toshiba 51H83 - it's great. But I have a basic calibration question. Ok, so I went through the Video Essentials disk and calibrated with it. However, when watching different DVDs or changing the video source to cable, I generally have to change the settings of color...
Jeff - Thanks, I suspected that may be the case. To be honest, I have taken great pains to avoid talking to an in-house BestBuy salesperson. My intent has been to do on-line brand & model research and go in (there or somewhere else) and say I want that, that, and that - and nothing else...
Based on reviews I've read here I've been looking online at the the Toshiba 51H83 HDTV. I've been reading as much info as I can (I'm a newbie), including the FAQ and the downloadable user manual from Toshiba's site. But some basic setup for HDTV is still unclear to me. My prime interest is using...
