I hope the folks who run DVD Beaver come around here & read this...I think it is one of the finest dvd/film sites on the net & I hope they can find the means to continue..I wish I had $$ to donate but I don't...if I did, DVDBeaver is certainly one of the few sites it would go to...don't give up...
if you must own it now, the Italian version appears to be the obvious choice because of the digital fogging on the Japanese version...I have heard rumors that there will be a legit region 1 release of this soon (possibly from Criterion?) - just rumors, so take them w/ a grain of salt :)
Criterion version will likely require you to take out a 2nd mortgage on your house to get (beware of bootlegs!), I think the BFI version is PAL so you will need a region free player that does conversion, etc if you dont already have one (if you are trying to see something as odd as Salo, chances...
hey all...I got the Peckinpah box from Deep Discount DVD & my disc 2 of the Wild Bunch is trash, so it's NOT just the Amazon boxes...neither of my set top players will play it properly & the dvd rom in my computer wont display anything at all...sigh, don't really know what to do at this...
hmmm...sounds like I should perhaps wait a few months - seems to be some major changes occuring...there is certainly no hurry now that you have let me know I won't be getting any pic quality changes :)
ah, Robert, thank you VERY much for the help, just what I was looking for! sad news , though... I also did indeed fear that compression was part of the problem with the channels looking so bad...what a shame sadly, my location probably would not allow for anything resembling decent reception of...
hello again all...here is the situation: we have DirecTV, standard def satellite...some channels that shouldnt (i.e. Fox, NBC) look atrocious...it's not the TV, as dvd looks fine (it's an older Samsung HDTV, CRT 30") & I suspect that it is the fact that I have to use S-Video as that is the...
jeez, this & the box set are nowhere to be found in ANY of the many wal marts in my area (ill be d*mned if I'm gonna pay Blockbuster's exorbitant price for it either) grrr..
My top 10 w/ these caveats: no particular order, not necessarily based on outstanding AV quality...simply stuff I love / enjoyed / can remember without going home & looking through the collection: 1. Cannibal Holocaust spec. ed. 2. Sex & Fury (The best movie I'd never heard of) 3. High...
I'm gonna throw in my $0.02 & sing the praises of this film...I am a LONG time horror fan & very serious about my "studies" in the genre, just so you know, & I think HT is the best horror film I've seen since Audition (maybe even better on a "pure scare" level)...I took a chance on it & am glad...
great news...El Topo has been on my must see list for a long time...just never got around to seeing it...man it's a great time to be alive for fans of esoteric cinema :)
timing indeed :) like the bad timing i had a while back when I paid 50$+ for Fulci's Zombie on the old Anchor Bay disc & it became readily available a few weeks later :frowning: DOH!
good review! but to newbie horror fans, dont let some of the low scores fool you! if these are the same transfers as AB's previous versions of these films (& i suspect they are), you should know thatt they are, for all intents & purposes, the best transfers of these films domestically...
of course this is a must buy for any exploitation/Eurohorror student w/ a strong stomach, but I still can't imagine it ever actually making it out...it has just always been one of those titles I assumed would never make it out in a legitimate U.S. release, not because of it's rarity, but because...
he may have been shooting open matte as mentioned above, with the intention of matting them to 1:85 or so for theatrical release...if this is the case, 4:3 would be revealing more than if they were letterboxed, tho the composition may be a bit off (i.e. too much headroom/legroom etc.
was there something after the credits started rolling?!?! if there was grrr.... someone let us know....as far as our little group knows, the end of the movie was "freebird"....is that incorrect???
saw this Saturday night, thought it was good, not great (felt the same about Land of the Dead)...bizarrely, the wife liked it but was disappointed that it wasnt depraved enough (!!!!!) - I have clearly turned her to the Dark Side :) acting this time around was MUCH better than HOA1000C, nice...
general rule is 50% off of original retail for the general public, 90% off retail for me :)....sorry, them's the rules...I'll expect delivery no later than next monday ;) silly mode OFF :)
stephen, i say go for the Fluances...i got them & rather like them, especially for the $$$ i think i would have been pretty unhappy had i followed the advice i so often see here about "dont waste your money on a bad 5.1 setup, just piece it together over time & get decent L + R...
and computer programs that can magically enhance a washed out grainy security camera photo into a clear shot worthy of framing (or as is usually the case, the capture/identification of a bad guy) :)
the great thing about the Hanzo box is that it's pretty darn cheap too (under 40$ US) the LW&C manga is, to me, one of the pinnacles of the art of comic book storytelling...the films, brilliant as they are, could never hope to fit all the nuance & complex storytelling into a 90 minute film, but...
the Hanzo films are superb (this coming from a diehard LW&C fan) & from watching the 1st one the new box set qaulity is smashing! also, don't assume that because you enjoyed Ilsa that you"ll enjoy Salon Kitty...SK is a lot more brooding/melancholy..I found it more "arty" than "exploitation" if...
Ryan, I dont have "proof or facts" (which is why i put the word "seemingly" in there :) ) it's just a hunch I get while watching the film...watch the cutting/editing during some of the fight scenes closely to get a better idea...it is indeed a VIOLENT movie, but not a particularly GRAPHIC or...
the key for me is not the DTS track (it's a shame, but not paramount to the enjoyment of the film), but the restoration of the MANY (seemingly) cut/censored bits of violence in the film...i'm not the gorehound I used to be, but the whole tone of this film demands that the excessive violence be...
saw this this weekend w/ the wife (also saw Sin City!!!) - great date movie, fun film, Fallon wasn't overbearingly silly- movie also teaches a nice lesson about obsession & what's really important in life :)
