    Best amp around $2k

Thanks, everyone, for your replies. I think now it's down to the Parasound 5250 and Classe CAV-150, with the Sherwood and NAD a distant 3rd and 4th. The speakers that I'm going to be driving with these amps are PSB Stratus Gold-i's and Silver-i's. These are neutral-toned 4-ohm speakers, with...

    Best amp around $2k

Ryan, thanks for pointing out Classe. Their stuff sounds pretty classy :). Ok that was lame. Anyway, I'm having a hard time finding info about it online. Would you care to elaborate on what you like about it and what you dislike?

    Best amp around $2k

Arthur, do you seriously not believe in using the adjective "dry" when describing an audio system? I've definitely heard gear that I would describe as sounding "dry" or "clinical". Not sure where you got pace, rythem, and grainy, but yeah I don't believe in those either. When I bought my...

    Best amp around $2k

I'm finally ready to make the leap to separates. I'm seriously eyeing a Sherwood Newcastle P-965 pre/pro, but more importantly, I want to get a 5-7 channel amp that's going to be the cornerstone of my system for years to come. I would love to be able to audition these, but I live in an A/V...

Need a new DVD player, <$1000 and not annoying

Right now I have a Sony NS900V, and a couple things about it really bug me. First of all, you have to use its bass management, either "large" or "small", with a fixed cutoff at 120 Hz. If I choose large, nothing goes to the sub, and if I choose small, the mains get nothing below 120 Hz. I've...

    Wireless 5.1 speaker set

I seem to recall seeing some Bose wireless speakers advertised on TV a week or so ago. Yeah, it may be wireless, but it's Bose...is that a sacrafice your coworker is willing to make?

Why is my bass so antiseptic?

James, That's interesting how that works out. I'll feel really dumb if one of the cables ARE installed backwards when I go to check this weekend. Thanks a lot for adding the NS900V config tips, Dave. I hadn't even looked at settings for the dvd player. Is the OSD only accessible through the...

Why is my bass so antiseptic?

James, I had the speakers set to "Large", with everything else "off" or "no" or whatever it says (yes, this is a 2.0 system for now). I am also using a coaxial digital cable to go from the dvd player to the receiver. Wayne, Yeah, the total room size is ~6500 cubic feet. Is there some way...

Why is my bass so antiseptic?

I've got them about 2.5' from the back wall (breathing room shouldn't matter because the speakers are front-ported). The speakers are about 10' apart and 2' from the side walls. They are also 11' from the main listening position (diagonally from front of speaker to listener's head). The speakers...

Why is my bass so antiseptic?

I just hooked up my system this weekend and tried it out eagerly, and I have to say that I'm somewhat disappointed in the sound. Here's my equipment: PSB Stratus Silveri (bought used, so they should be at least somewhat broken in) NAD T752 (refurb) Sony NS900V (used) KimberKable 8vs single...

    Is more power really needed?

I haven't looked into it. Although, for the cost of insurance that will cover that kind of stuff, I could probably buy the rest of the stuff for my system.

    Is more power really needed?

Couldn't have said it better. Last year I was in the dorms still, and they got really strict about noise policies right at the beginning of the year, so I went almost all of last school year not watching any movies / listening to any music (except a few times on headphones...but I hate...

    Is more power really needed?

Exactly. I did some quick research on Rotel, but they do not quote many useful specs on their website, and nothing pertaining to 4 ohms. Apparently the 1055 (all I could afford) is only rated for 8 ohms, something you find out only after you open the box (from what I've read somewhere on...

    Is more power really needed?

Err...I take that back. Apparently, the Rotel 1055 can reassign the front channel amps to the back (for if you added a power amp for your mains). So it is possible, but I've yet to hear of any that can do it the other way around. I would not be at all surprised if the Rotel can do this, too...

    Is more power really needed?

Man...reminds me of when I was on the freeway the other day, me and this BMW was chillin' side-by-side at like 60, traffic was somewhat thick. Then an opening appears in front of the BMW, and that guy took off like he was standing still. No way could my car even come close to that! Siiigh....

    Is more power really needed?

Chu: Yes, I'd be able to return them. I'd be buying from either Yawa or DMC Electronics; both are about the same distance from me. Michael: I know that more power is better, and I know that the PSB's are hard to drive (due to low sensativity and 4-ohm-ness), but my question was will I see a...

    Is more power really needed?

Wayne: I mirrored that page on my website since the original was on Yahoo! and had lots of annoying pop-up ads: http://www.mnagy.net/ratevsac.htm I actually hadn't looked at it in a long time, and I was going to post the link to it to show how NAD does not exagerate their power ratings (a lot...

15 amp circuit sufficient? My results........

Are you guys talking about a dedicated electrical circuit in your house? As in, your HT system has its own breaker switch? Never thought about doing that before.....

    Is more power really needed?

Jonathan: I won't be using this for two channel audio. I only have two channels right now because I am poor. I will get more in the near future. I hope I'm not going to need to upgrade in less than 3 years. If the past four years are any indication of the next four years, then I'll probably want...

    Is more power really needed?

Jack: Yeah, ramen is pretty bad. Actually, really bad. Plus it tastes awful IMHO. I was just using it as an example of cheap food that I'll be living on soon. John: Salad, fruit, and bread. And some cheese now and then. Mmmm... Can't get a cheaper meal that tastes as good. But I digress...

    Is more power really needed?

Jason: Very good point about watts vs amps. Doing a quick search online shows that most manufacturers (read: all the ones I've seen) do not quote their maximum continuous current output, neither for stereo nor for all channels driven. NAD does claim that the 762 is capable of 45 amps peak...

    Is more power really needed?

Yeah, I'll be using the system 75% music, 25% movies. I do listen to classical and jazz, among other genres. :-/ Being on a tight budget sucks. Either I splurge on the bigger amp and make up for it by eating ramen more often next quarter, or I stay with the 752 and eat out more often. Being a...

    Is more power really needed?

Chu: Currently I have nothing powering this system. It's been my summer project to research and slowly piece together a system by the time school starts back up in the fall. My HT "room" is only about 12'x14', but it has almost full-width openings into my dining room, kitchen, and living room...

    Is more power really needed?

Hmm...so torodial psu's give better current with less noise. Less noise at high current would matter to me, I think, since the PSB's are 4-ohm speakers, so they'd be drawing a relatively larger amount of current than typical 8-ohm speakers. But in the product specs, both receivers claim to have...

    Is more power really needed?

I am trying to decide between buying a NAD T752 and a NAD T762. I can get them for $600 and $900, respectively. I don't really need any second zone capablities, I don't need amplification for 6 or 7 channels (I'm only going to be running 5.1 at the most), and I don't listen to music or movies...

    Best DVD Player for Audio?

Does anybody know if playback of newer dvd audio formats (DTS-ES, etc) will work even if a DVD player does not "support" it? I mean, theoretically, shouldn't the player just send the unaltered digital ac3 stream to the external decoder through a digital toslink or coaxial connection? If that is...
