Paul-- I just rec'd a PM for my plans from one of those old threads with bad links. I JUST came to the forum to see if I could find the old thread and finally post the plans here (at the time, attachments weren't allowed... or at least not big ones). Here is that old thread, if anyone else is...
OK. I'm tired of this thing, and it doesn't go with the rest of our HT's theme, soooooo..... Free to a good home: Jim Carrey standee from Me, Myself & Irene. It's in perfect condition. I bought it from a local video store that went out of business, and it was still new, in-box. I'm in the...
I'm sorry... 1" rigid foam insulation, like-- http://owenscorning.com/around/insul...s/foamular.asp If you go with a piano hinge, just make sure it's wide enough to allow the screws to be installed into the center piece of wood. I'm not sure a standard 1-1/2" piano hinge will be wide enough...
I've built several small (kneewall) doors, using 1/2" MDF on front and back surfaces, with a sandwiched layer of poplar 1x4s (as I recall) around the edge. The middle of the sandwich was filled with foam board. If this isn't clear, I can draw a picture.... Anyways, the doors are EXTREMELY...
Nice article, Ethan. itai--- in addition to Ethan's information in the article, you should be familiar with one of the most frequently mentioned design suggestions for electrical wiring in a home theater--- it is HIGHLY suggested that you place your audio and video equipment on a separate...
Biscuits are ideal for MDF, IMHO. I use biscuits in all my MDF projects. Typically, I use size "0" or "10", depending on the thickness of the MDF and the stress on the joint. The fact that there is no grain structure is actually why biscuits are preferred--- fasteners, like screws, won't hold...
Heck, I've got only 8-1/2' ceilings, and I still found it a challenge. BTW, Neil-- I hope you consider yourself lucky, if that was your only challenge.... sheesh. I think I've had maybe 20-30 challenges. At least 6-7 were substantial!
Just a warning about high ceilings--- You may find that you'll be mounting a pj on a longer than desirable pole, depending on your viewing preferences and projector choice. If you use the often-suggested "1/3 screen height rule" for your optimal screen height, this usually requires the top of...
In many cases it's not actually necessary to lift up the carpet, especially if you're only dealing with speaker wire. I think this is preferable, if possible, so that you don't have problems with an improperly stretched carpet. Usually you can just push the wire directly under the bottom of...
A One Sheet (in the US) is approx. 27"x40" or 27"x41". Apparently, original theatrical 1-sheets prior to 1985 measured the full 27x41, but they are usually closer to 27x40 now. Video store one sheets are generally close to 27x40.
Kevin-- That's what I'm doing, too. I really see no problems in building on top of the carpet, as long as (like you've said) it is well-braced and doesn't reverberate (too much). I'd still be interested though to hear if someone has a theory on why this is not a good idea (acoustically).... I...
Probably more the latter.... although maybe we're just not sure what your theory is. :D I'm sure there are people interested in THX-certified DVD players. That's why Marantz, Onkyo, Pioneer, and Denon get the certification-- it's more about marketing IMHO. If you're asking would an HTPC be a...
While I absolutely love MDF (I make pretty much everything out of it!), I would not use it for a regular floor. Like Mark said, I'd use plywood or OSB decking. If you ever need to screw something down to it or nail into it, you'll regret going with MDF... it is not very nail or screw friendly...

You can control X10 by a PC or a network (wireless or hardwired). Maybe I didn't understand what you've said here, but as you indicated in your first post, you just need the suitable interfaces. There are several common PC interfaces for X10. I'm not exactly sure what your problem is with...
Dark gloss finishes are somewhat prone to problems with showing scratches. I used that Krylon High Gloss Black Poly mentioned above on several countertops in my HT. It provides a very nice, hard finish, but is still prone to an occasional light scratch. Polyurethane is what provides the hardness...
Nice, Dave... I had an American Surplus catalog years ago. I was trying to remember the name of that place just 3-4 months ago. I've got some browsing to do! :)
Troy-- What parts of the rack are you painting and what are they made out of? If the shelves are the "traditional" wood/plywood/MDF, then I recommend spray or roller. I usually use a primer in either case (like Rustoleum's Auto primer; HD/Lowes, light, gray or black, depending on your finish...
Ron! MCM is the "other" vendor I decided not the mention! I bought several items in the past from them that were all substantially cheaper at PE. For example-- This weekend, I just bought some speaker grille guides (the ball & socket pegs). I can't find them on the MCM site right now (I can't...
Also, it depends on what your criteria are for selecting posters-- some people like to collect and display "real" posters... I personally like to change posters in-and-out constantly, so I get free video posters from a local, mom-and-pop video store. Unfortunately, the store just went out of...
There is substantial discussion here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=322822 A particular vendor is doing a PowerBuy right now, which ends March 31. A link is in this thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=370742 I've seriously considered getting in on the...
I use PartsExpress for the harder-to-find items, like larger gauge audio wall connectors and banana plugs. Standard outlet covers and gang boxes are cheaper at Home Depot/Lowes (as you'd expect, being that they are standard construction materials). Modular wall plates are also available at Home...
Gary-- It's called "Kilim Red." RL Number: TH53 http://rlhome.polo.com/rlhome/produc...&start=48&pg=4 I used it, too. You can see it in the virtual tour on my HT webpage (although the lighting isn't terribly even throughout the image). I had about 20-30 swatches of various reds that I...
heh heh... while reading down the thread, the first thing that came to mind was encapsulating the pole in a rectangular wall pillar. They seem to be increasingly popular in higher-end HT designs. You can hide side speakers in some of them... I've got my components "semi-hidden" in one and am...
I'm not really clear on this, because I don't know what the "huge openings in the ceiling braces" are.... I can't envision what your design looks like. If the traditional metal fish tape won't work (like Wayne indicated, because of the natural bend in it), then there are other fiberglass...
