Kenwood VR-6070 closeout at BB: worth it?

Scott, I for one am sorry that you had a bad experience with your Kenwood and if I had the same problems you did, I would probably be picking on the unit as well. However, my experience with the 6060 has been totally different. I knew from my prepurchase research that the component video...

Playing 6.1 track on a 5.1 reciever question

Myo, the way people address this issue is to use two separate speakers, slightly offset from center, for the 6th channel. Doing this allows the ear to recognize that those sounds are coming from behind the listener. Many 6.1 receivers actually have two sets of posts for the 6th channel to...

Playing 6.1 track on a 5.1 reciever question

To answer your original question, DTS ES is the only format with a truly discrete 6th channel AFAIK. If you play it on a 5.1 channel system, yes, the receiver should adapt to this and play those effects through both rear speakers.

So, why is my Kenwood VR-6060 doing this?

Nick, I just listened to that Spider-Man scene several times and I can't detect any problem from my center channel. I tried it at a low volume and a high volume, and I heard no crackling or humming at all. Do you have Active EQ or Speaker EQ on? Perhaps those modes are introducing some...

So, why is my Kenwood VR-6060 doing this?

I have the same receiver, and I haven't noticed this. In fact, my center channel seemed a little TOO prominent in my system so I turned it down a little. However, I have the Spider-Man DVD so I'll play that scene when I get home and let you know if I hear any problems. - Andy

    Kenwood 6070 Remote Codes

Apex DVD players are notorious for not working with preprogrammed remote codes. I've only heard of a few remotes that had Apex codes that worked correctly. Why not just 'learn' the codes into the remote? - Andy

Kenwood VR-6070 closeout at BB: worth it?

I think it's an absolute steal at $329. If you can find one, buy it. I bought the 6060 a while back (same receiver with a few less features) and I've really enjoyed it. I was a little hesitant to buy a Kenwood (never had any experience with their receivers prior to this) but it sounded good...

Good Deals At Best Buy; Kenwood VR-6060 $295, Pioneer VSX-D811S $343

I believe the 6070 has now dropped to $359, or maybe even $329!!! Amazing price if your local BB still has one. I'm guessing the 6060 has continued to drop as well.

Good Deals At Best Buy; Kenwood VR-6060 $295, Pioneer VSX-D811S $343

They've dropped the VR-6070 to about $385 in my area. This is a steal at this price. Here's the Sound & Vision review. Note the actual power output. Unfotunately this is a clearance price so you can't use the 10% off coupon, but it's still a great deal. I've got a 6060 and it's great, the...

In case anyone is wondering about the amps in the Kenwood VR-6060 vs. the VR-6070

I wrote to Kenwood customer service a few months (!) back asking them if the amps in the 6060 are the same as the 6070 (the 6070 is the THX-certified version with a few more features). It's been mentioned on the forums that they use the same amps but I wanted to be sure. The original text of my...

    Kenwood 6060

I usually watch TV at around -45 to -40db. Movies are more like -35 to -30db. So yes, what you're experiencing is normal.

    Kenwood VR-6070

No, 10 mhz is not adequate for HD switching. However, this is one of very few weaknesses in this receiver IMO. I know if you really need component switching this could be a deal-breaker, but if you can use direct connections or have another workaround it's otherwise a great piece. BTW, I...

    snapping speakers or faulty receiver?

rick, I've read at least one post from another forum member who had to return his 1803 because the 2nd zone would not work properly. He couldn't get it to work despite multiple calls to Denon support. Just FYI.

Best Receiver for $350 and DVD player under $150?

I've heard Crazy Eddie is somewhat questionable. I've seen people post that they had great experiences with them; however, I've also seen reports of scratched-off serial numbers and other questionable practices by this vendor. I don't have personal experience with them so I can't say for sure...

    ReplayTV - RF or Composite????

Mark, I have an older Replay, but I'll answer with the way my unit works. Yes, when you are watching "live" TV, it is buffered by about a second or two. You'll notice this if you turn the same channel on in another room - the sound coming from each room will not be in sync. The unit does...

    Receiver suggestions?

Artie, I believe I've read that in independent tests, the Pioneer tested at 74w x 6, which is still a decent performance. Ryan, the Pioneer is one of the most-mentioned "budget" receivers around here, and it does provide an amazing feature set considering it can be had for around $300. For...

    The truth about internet e-tailers!

There is definitely a risk/reward factor involved when purchasing from online "non-authorized" merchants if you value a warranty. Most of the non-authorized folks do at least have a 30-day return policy, but they may hit you with restocking fees if you decide to return a unit. One strategy...

    Yamaha HTR-5560 vs. XV-530

Actually, the RX-V530 is equivalent to the HTR-5550, while the HTR-5560 would be equivalent to the RX-V630. So the 5560 is actually one rung up the ladder in Yamaha's model line. - Andy

Any "RF" converters out for the SONY DA4ES?

Nick, AFAIK these work with any infrared signal. BTW, here's a link to Radio Shack's product page, and some additional information from X10 (the manufacturer). - Andy

Any "RF" converters out for the SONY DA4ES?

You could look into an IR extender, a device that converts IR signals to RF and back again (Radio Shack carries a model for around $50, I think). Also, there are some aftermarket remotes that have RF capabilities (I know that One-For-All makes one). Try browsing the forums at...

    Turning off center channel

I used to run my Yamaha receiver in center-channel 'Phantom' mode quite a bit because my center was vastly inferior to my mains. I upgraded my center, and I'm very glad I did. The clarity of the dialogue has improved a great deal using the new center channel, especially in 5.1/6.1 formats...

Why do receivers sound terrible in the store?

I agree with Jack - the "listening" areas at virtually all chain stores are horrendous. At my local Best Buy, all of their receivers are simply sitting on shelves with red buttons next to each of them which you press to select that receiver. They're all hooked up to some crappy-looking Sony...

    Kenwood VR-6060 - Any good?

I've been looking at receivers lately also, and I think I have settled on the 6060. Best Buy had it on sale a few weeks ago for $349, so if warranty issues/buying online concern you, you could wait until it goes on sale again. Another note: in all the research I've done here and on other...
