    S&V Cal ibration W/ Toshiba 50H82

David, Some more details might help. What's "yucky"? Your DVD picture, cable? Also define "yuck"...is the picture too dark...fuzzy? And what DVD player are you using? Settings there can affect the picture too. As for your settings...they sound very close to what I use on my Toshiba...

    Just bought a SR8200...whoops

I have the SR9200 (fresh from a factory upgrade to THX Ultra2) and a Panny DVD-CP72 and it has the delay too. Like a lot of others here, I find the performance to be so good I don't notice the delay often enough to bother me. I haven't tried DVD Audio or digital HDTV yet.

Need Advice - Widescreen or Regular

You can also find the Sound & Vision Home Theater Tune Up disc at a lot of electronics chain stores, like Best Buy and Fry's for about $20. It's basically a stripped down version of the Avia DVD, produced by the same people who do Avia, but it provides all the basic user menu calibrations...

Need Advice - Widescreen or Regular

Mark, IMHO...you made the right choice going wide screen. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, I was going through what you just did...pondering wide screen Vs regular screen. I started off wanting a regular 4:3 set because most of my viewing is standard analog cable, but also being a "techie"...

Panasonic DVD-RP82 - Where can I find one?

For what it's worth, the Fry's in Austin only had one display model of the RP82 on Saturday morning and the sales kid wouldn't make me a deal for it. Their computer says they have 3 in stock, but he said they were probably returns that haven't been fully processed yet. I also checked Best Buy...

    New TV Purchase?

Stretch modes are kind of like speakers...it's a very subjective assesment. What your eye/brain combination likes may not appeal to other people. The best thing to do is read the forums and do searches on a few target brands and models and then go to a local store and check them out for...

Avia set up and monitor menus

I just got a Toshiba 50HDX82 RPTV and its menus do the same thing. It's particulary bothersome on the contrast/brightness adjustments. The only way I've found to work around it is to make an adjustment then exit the menu to check it. It's a bit of a pain, but it works. Considering everything...

    New or refurbished?

I've bought several refurb and store demo units over the years with excellent luck...Aiwa, Samsung, Onkyo and Marantz. Like a poster above, I work for a large contract repair company for computer networking equipment, and as he says, most returned gear is only analyzed for the customer...

Black level test on Avia DVD

I can't tell you anything about getting into your service menu, but your video settings will drift considerably as your new set breaks in. Several other threads have stated that a new RPTV's CRT's will drift about 20% in their first 100 hours of use. If you can't see the bars on the...

    New TV Purchase?

I just went through your situation myself. I had a 12 year old 27" Sony that I wanted to replace. I was looking at the Toshiba 36HFX72 for some of the reasons you mentioned...not much HDTV in my area yet...I only have standard cable...etc. Also like you, I tend to keep major appliances a long...

    a big screen thought....

Patrick...and Mark for that matter, The Tosh 36HFX72 is a 4:3 direct view CRT TV. AFAIK, Sony is the only company that makes anything bigger in a direct view CRT TV, their 40" monster, the KV40XBR800 (Also 4:3)! A whopping 304 Lbs. without stand and 3 Kilobucks! I believe if you want anything...

    a big screen thought....

Patrick Sun said: "Your best bet is to go for a Sony 4:3 HDTV that has the squeeze mode for 16x9 material... (perhaps the Toshiba has a model that fits the bill)." Actually, that's one reason I picked the Tosh 36HFX. It has the 16:9 squeeze mode, a highly rated line doubler, SVM that can be...

    a big screen thought....

Hi All, 1st. post for me here...but this thread is exactly the conundrum I currently find myself in. I'm upgrading my living room entertainment system to something that at least resembles HT. Like Mark...while not on an Island, I'm not impressed with the HDTV content that is currently...
