Narrowed Down: Denon 1710 or Yamaha S5750

It sounds like I'd be better off with the Denon and use it's 3:2 pulldown rather than using that feature of my TV. I went out today and tried to find each of the two DVD players at stores around town. Tweeter was supposed to have the Denon. They didn't. Best Buy was supposed to have the...

Narrowed Down: Denon 1710 or Yamaha S5750

UPDATE: I was just reading through the manual on my Toshiba 65H82 TV and found that it has something called "Cinema Mode" which is a 3:2 Pulldown switch processed by the TV itself, so I don't need that feature in the DVD player. So, taking 3:2 pulldown out of the equation, is the Denon 1710...

Narrowed Down: Denon 1710 or Yamaha S5750

I want a good quality, inexpensive, black, single disk DVD player. All I do is watch purchased DVD movies on a 65-inch projection TV, so I just want good picture and good surround sound. I don't care about other bells and whistles or ability to play lots of media types. Based on my wants...

DVD Player (in black) for Older Projection HDTV

OUCH!! I said I'd spend $200, not $2,000! I'm guessing that you were pulling my leg. That beast is out of my league. Any other suggestions?

DVD Player (in black) for Older Projection HDTV

I have a 3-year old Toshiba 65H82 widescreen projection TV capable of 1080i, but it only has component video inputs. My current DVD player just quit working, so I'm looking for a replacement. I grew interested in upconverting players after researching them on this forum. However, every one I...

HD Olympic Games Opening Ceremony/Ongoing Coverage: What's Going On???

Hey DJ, thanks for the great answer! I had no idea that NBC was having to rely on another company. That explains a lot. I look forward to the future of HD as it becomes cheaper and more popular.

HD Olympic Games Opening Ceremony/Ongoing Coverage: What's Going On???

I decided to send NBC an e-mail with my feedback on their lack of HD Olympics coverage. I used the e-mail address they provided for doing that ([email protected]) and it was returned as undeliverable. That gives me a nice warm feeling!

HD Olympic Games Opening Ceremony/Ongoing Coverage: What's Going On???

There is so little coverage! NBC so proudly advertised their HD coverage of the Olympics, yet there is very little in comparison to the SD channel. All day today they are just repeating the Opening Ceremonies. Even tonight during prime time there's no HD Olympic coverage. NBC is really pissing...

HD Olympic Games Opening Ceremony/Ongoing Coverage: What's Going On???

I just checked the NBC website schedule of olympic coverage to see if the competitions will also be delayed by one hour on HDTV. What I found was actually worse. The NBC-HD schedule simply shows the opening ceremony repeating over and over all day tomorrow while regular NBC is showing sports...

HD Olympic Games Opening Ceremony/Ongoing Coverage: What's Going On???

I, too, am seeing only Ice Skating on the HD broadcast, so I had to switch to SD just to see the opening ceremony. That REALLY pisses me off considering my main reason for upgrading to HDTV on Cox in San Diego was to watch the games (and OPENING CEREMONY) in HDTV.

    HDTV Broadcasts in 5.1 Surround?

Hi SimiA, the only reason I upgraded was because I could do it for free. Since I have a complete package of goods from Cox, adding the HDTV reduced my High Speed internet connection by $10 a month which cancelled the extra monthly cost of the HDTV. But I must say, I'm less than impressed so far...

    HDTV Broadcasts in 5.1 Surround?

Hi Andy, thanks for the response. I do have my STB set to Dolby Digital audio out. It's connected to my receiver via an optical cable. My reciver is a Yamaha HTR-5560 with 6.1 capability. When receiving a true 5.1 signal, such as from a DVD that I KNOW is in 5.1, there's a button I can press...

    HDTV Broadcasts in 5.1 Surround?

I recently upgraded from Cox Digital cable to Cox HDTV Cable. I was disappointed to find that just because a broadcast is in HD, it isn't necessarily in 5.1 surround. I can find plenty of listings on the internet showing what programs are in HD, but I can't find any listings that tell what...

    Can A CD-ROM Drive Play a DVD?

That makes sense. It's interesting how technology just keeps moving forward at a fast pace. I was watching the Special Features on the "Total Recall, Special Edition" DVD a few days ago. That movie was released in 1990, not all that long ago for someone in their mid-40's like me. Yet the...

    Can A CD-ROM Drive Play a DVD?

At work today, the guy in the next cube asked me if a DVD movie will play in his CD-RW machine at work. I told him I didn't think so, but that I'd try to find out for sure. I just tried it on my computer at home without any luck. Is there maybe some software that will allow it work? I'm...

Play DVD Movie on Computer CD-ROM??

I'm at work right now and I'm curious to know if there is any software that will enable the CD-ROM drive in a computer to play back a DVD movie. The guy in the next cube asked me this question. I didn't know the answer, but told him that one of you might. Thanks! Michael

    Can subwoofer stay ON ?

Could you get the brand and model from the ID plate and post it here? That would help us research it for you. Thanks! Michael P.S. - Chances are that leaving it on is just fine. But I'd still like to look it up specifically.

    monster or AR dig coax?

I just learned something interesting about Monster cable... My son works at Best Buy so I decided to buy a whole new HT system while he has that excellent discount. The employee discount is based on Best Buy's cost plus a few percent. That means items with a huge markup give the appearance of...

How close can I put a Sub to my TV?

If you can find the specs on your sub, see if it is shielded. Some subs are these days. If so, then distance is not an issue. If it's not shielded, or you can't find out, then look for distortion in the TV picture near where the sub is located. If you see distortion, move the sub far enough from...

    HK vs. Yamaha vs. Onkyo

I can't comment on the HK. But I recently purchased the Yammy 5560, so I can give you my opinion on that. I've watched about 15 movies through it in the past two weeks. My HT system is in a pretty large room (approx 28' X 15'). I have no trouble filling the room with good solid clean sound, so...

How do I get my DVD's to play in a 16:9 format?

Yeah, isn't that frustrating! I just bought my first wide screen TV, a 65" Toshiba RPTV. After properly setting up my new progressive scan DVD player to recognize my TV as a 16:9 and telling my TV which display mode to use, some of the "widescreen" DVD's I played STILL showed black bars top and...

Looking for a cheap -all in one- unit

I suspect that about the only thing that will fit those requirements is an all-in-one "shelf system". However, I can say, through personal experience, that some of them are very impressive sounding for their price. Each of my two teenagers has that type of system. After listening to many...

    Progressive Scan worse than Interlaced

Scott, I also recently replaced a regular DVD player with a Progressive Scan DVD player with terrific results. I didn't even buy a very expensive progressive scan player: It's a Philips DVD793CH 5-disk changer ($179 at Best Buy, but my son works there so it was a lot less for me)...

    JBL PB10/12 or Athena AS-P400?

I own a PB12. It is in the large 28 X 15 foot family room in my house. It can more than fill the room with impressive bass - tight and clean, no hint of distortion. When watching "The Haunting", I thought the earth was moving.

    WTB: JBL pb12 subwoofer

I have one and love it. It plays clean and tight at any volume level. I have it in a very large family room (28 X 15) and it can shake everything in the room if I want it to.
