Now that I have all of my Wood Works shows copied to my DVR, what is the best way to get them into my computer so I can edit out the commercials and burn a DVD? Comcast says none of the miscellaneous connections, USB and Firewire, are active. I have a Dell 4700 with the Media Version of XP.
Juan, good answer on the help aspect (I did leave myself a bit open on that one), anyone willing to admit to spending more time in front of the screen now that they have a HT?
Ok, ever since I set up my HT system, and Comcast hooked me with all of the digital channels and HD offerings, I find I am wasting into a couch potato, with roots growing out of my butt. Even a year and a half later, I am still thrilled with the big, clear screen and can't get enough. Of course...
I have had a JBL PB12 for 18 months now and I love it. I course I can only crank it up when the wife is gone. If it ever tanks, I will probably go for the SVS, based on all the great comments found on this forum.
I love mine, had it since last November. For the past few months I try to remember to turn it off when it looks like I won't be using it for the rest of the day. I generally only use it for movies (DVD or HDTV). No problems so far!
Bruce, I'm glad to hear you tweaked your settings and got it rockin'! I watched Behind Enemy Lines last nite quite loud, probably 85 dB peaks, and, man, the gunfire, explosions and jet engines had me sitting on the edge of the couch. I love it! Can't believe I hit 105 on Contact. Anybody...
I have had the PB-12 since November and am very pleased, but then I only use it for LFE on movies. In my opinion it rocks. I watched the wormhole scene from Contact at 105 db measured and it sounded and felt great. (Wife not home, she can't stand the high levels). I have read the reports on the...
I love my Panny. Did you get yours with the screen protector or not? I didn't and have been happy so far, but my dogs are short and old, sort of like me, and the grandkids are under control. Hey, I got gypped, no smell-o-rama. I bought mine from Circuit City in November and took a floor model...
Looking at the Alpha LS, I can't help but remember with a grin that 30 years ago a DIY magazine promoted a setup called the "Sweet Sixteen" utilizing 16 inexpensive 4" speakers in one box that was supposed to sound "sweet". An Audio Mag tested them and said that it sounded like 16 cheap...
Define bass localization. Is it hearing the bass come from a box on the floor or does it have to do with an emphasis or hole in he bass frequency response? If it is the latter, you may want to set your crossover using a frequency sweep test such as that found on the Avid test DVD coupled with...
I like the concept of a powered sub, that is where you need more power than many amps can deliver. If you don't need TOO much in the way of low freq, and you power your sub with your amp, make sure you have an amp that can adjust the volume of each channel to balance the speakers evenly, not...
I would think that it depends on what you are using for your "minis", little Bose cubes or something bigger with some lower mirange/upper bass capability. I am quite happy with my JBL NSP1-II system which uses 4" satelite speakers with a dual 5" center speaker. That system also received very...
Oh man, I didn't need to hear your report on the PB-12 as being awful in reviews. I have had one for 4 months now and am quite happy, whether I listen at 60 or 105 dB. What gives?
The 7710A comes with a solid rubber-like round jacket, that is what I received. They have that, uh, industrial look, kind of like I would imagine in a recording studio. Fits my needs fine.
I, too, am a BlueJeansCables fan. I bought a 25' digital audio coax, and three 7710A component cables, 25', 2' and 5'. Couldn't be happier. Delevery was FAST. But be prepared, the 7710A is a REAL "monster" cable, with three good size not-too-flexible coax tucked in a round cover, it looks a bit...
SPEAKING OF LOUD. I'm 55 now and thanks to years of listening to LOUD music with earphones in my younger days, now that I can afford a good sounding system, the sound it makes falls on nearly DEAF ears that ring constantly from tinnitus. My high freq perception is severely compromised. I still...
If oxidation is a concern and some say you shouldn't tin the wire, (It oxidizes too), what about gooping the connection with dielectic (sp?) grease available at electronic or auto parts stores?
I noticed that Best Buys carries a Motorola (4 way?) bidirectional splitter/booster for about $80 that is rated for HDTV and internet signals and I believe has a 15 dB gain. They make the popular set top 5100 HDTV cable box, I presume the booster would be compatable and of similar quality.
Great thread, it gives me a list of DVD's to view/listen. I listed Contact earlier, but after listening to a few more, I will add the THX intro to Toy Story and the explosion slo-mo near the beginning of Swordfish.
You might look at stepping up your JBL option to the JBL NSP1-II/PB-10 package. List around $800, easily available for $500 and includes wall mount brackets for the 4 satelites. This has had some good reviews. It's the system I bought in November and am real happy with it, although I spent a few...
Both. I have been with Netflix for almost 3 years, although now that I have Comcast HD I may rethink Netflix. My purchased collection is up to about 35 titles, took a big jump at Christmas with boxed sets of James Bond and Lethal Weapon plus 5 single titles including some old favorites. Netflix...
Popped open my Christmas copy of Toy Story, and a different version of the THX calibration is also included. I'll have to say, the THX intro is pretty impressive on this disk.
In reviewing the bonus material in the Ice Age DVD, I clicked on the THX logo and ran across a batch of Audio and video setup material, similar to some of the material on the Avia setup DVD. A real nice "Easter egg". Is this common on THX discs?
Well, I solved my problem, but I am only relating the solution in case anyone else overlooked the obvious. I have had my Sony DVD for about three years now, and I never realized there was an on-screen setup menu. Gee, what's this 55 page manual for, it looks pretty simple to me! Well in...
Contact is my favorite. First the delicate sound field and visual effects during the opening sequence with the sound bytes as they fly through space. Second, the sequence with Jodie zooming through the wormholes going from thundering chaos to dead silence in one frame, then just when you get...
It's a thing of beauty, Comcast orders the unit without ALL of the features, for example no firewire yet. Here is a link for the owners manual which shows diagrams of the back of the unit:

Thanks Jay. With receiver test tones all speakers sound equal and clear. Right now I am using the optical link DVD player to Yamaha. I think my next step is to run try the coax output and if that isn't it run the rear channels out of the DVD player direct into, say, a CD input on my receiver and...
