    Guide: GREYSCALE CALIBRATION FOR DUMMIES

Hi everyone! I'd like to announce a new extensive guide I've put together: Link: GREYSCALE & COLOUR CALIBRATION FOR DUMMIES » Over 250 hours of research and writing have gone into this guide. This guide came about as the do-it-yourself (DIY) crowd has been asking more and more...

Let's drop the term "fullscreen" because it hurts the OAR cause!

I'd simply be happy if studio's stopped making MISTAKES during the labelling of movie OAR's. Take the recent movie: Roger & Me (by Michael Moore) It was filmed originally in 4x3 so the DVD is also 4x3, but the label on the back of the DVD incorrectly states that "THIS FILM HAS BEEN...

14 Gauge Wire at Home Depot

Yes, of course chip! The colour of the outer wrap doesn't mean anything... I've just never seen any manufacturer make CL2 and CL3 rated speaker wire that's clear like the stuff that's often sold for 'regular' use. Like Chip said - make sure it has the words "CL2" or "CL3" written on it. Kal

14 Gauge Wire at Home Depot

I used the Home Depot 12/2 in-wall rated (CL2) stuff for my HT. I even doubled it up (biwired) it for all front speakers to get to down to around 8 or 9 gauge. If I remember correctly the 12/2 in-wall stuff is green, the 14/2 stuff is blue, and the 16/2 stuff was yellow. The clear speaker...

Frequency waterfall charts of a few familiar favourites

Movie: 8 mile The last battle scene (approx the last 20 or so minutes of the movie) has a couple of instances where the announcer's mic gets turned off/on or unplugged or something similar... This results in one of the lowest frequency shockwaves I've ever felt through my Paradigm Servo-15...

    Paradigm Studio V3's

Agreed. The only finish I'd pay extra for is a black velvet finish that completely absorbs light bounce making the speaker as invisible as possible. Even my current black laminate Paradigm L/C/R floormount speakers aren't dark enough, so I had to wrap the sides to make them completely...

Can you recommend a center speaker?

The best center to match your older (no longer manufactured I think) Bose 301's would be another 301. Look on ebay or audiogon for a set of used ones. Kal

Which poster frames do you like best, metal or wood?

There's no "right" answer to this. Use whatever best suits your existing decor. Kal

Is it possible to place a plasma screen tv above the fireplace mantle?

There shouldn't be any physical reasons why you couldn't do this, but every fireplace I've ever seen would simply place the screen way too high for comfortable viewing. The center speaker would have to be even higher still. It's unfortunate that a lot of magazines include photos of custom...

Jay Yo wrote: The screen is too high? lol That's great. It is but its funny you would look at that room and say "Nice, but the screen is too high." A little goddy but nice. Sorry, but I don't see what's funny about this! I've spent quite a few years in various HT's in people's houses - it...

Fun day auditioning high end speakers

Everyone enjoys different sounding speakers - what's right to one person may too warm/mushy/bright/etc to the next person. So no problem if you found what's usually considered highly-regarded to not sound very good to your own ears. That being said however, you really should go listen to...

For My Acoustic Research Homies (and you other guys) - Some Pics

If money's a problem and you want to get a better display, pick up a used Sony 1031 CRT projector for $200-400USD and set it up to throw a fairly small image (no more then 6' wide). Properly set up (and with good tubes) it'll run circles around any consumer grade RPTV out there... Kal

I've just recently started browsing other people's home theater's and......

Top problems I usually find: - Get the center speaker off the floor and as close as possible to the screen. Try to keep the center tweeter at more or less the same height as the L + R speakers. - Put your L + R speakers equal distances from the screen! Don't put your equipment beside your...

    Please check out my theater..

Very nice, but if you're looking for some comments here goes ... though most of these are of the "it's too late!" variety! - L, C, R speakers should have the tweeters roughly the same height to avoid a "lobbing" or "jumping" affect when you pan L ->R. So move the center speaker below the...

Anyone heard of new Anthem/Paradigm line called "Anthem Statement"?

FYI - HomeTheaterHiFi.com has some photos from CEDIA that show Paradigm's new line of speakers. Still unsure where these fit into their lineup as I'm having trouble finding any info on these speakers. See here for the photos: http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volum...10-2002-3.html Kal

Thanks for the info Kevin! "Dude, hopefully you do something for air flow in your rack." Yup! It's completely open in the back no problems at all with ventilation. It's actually considerably better then when I used to have the stuff shelved on 'normal' stands since now it's open on all sides...

Front Projector System and Too Much Ambient Sunlight: A solution?

On any front projection system (regardless of technology used), you obtain the colour BLACK (the darkest colour possible) by simply not projecting any light. So here's a simple test you can try to see how things will look with varying amounts of ambient light: 1. Tape a piece of white...
